Crowding limits peripheral visual discrimination and recognition: a target easily identified in isolation becomes impossible to recognize when surrounded by other stimuli, often called flankers. Most accounts of crowding predict less crowding when the targ ...

In object recognition, features are thought to be processed in a hierarchical fashion from low-level analysis (edges and lines) to complex figural processing (shapes and objects). Here, we show that figural processing determines low-level processing. Verni ...

In crowding, flanking elements strongly deteriorate performance. For example, vernier offset discrimination is strongly affected by neighboring flankers. Performance is worst when the flankers have the same length as the vernier. Surprisingly, performance ...

What is new in perceptual learning? In the early days of research, specificity was the hallmark of perceptual learning; that is, improvements following training were limited to the trained stimulus features. For example, training with a stimulus improves p ...

Is consciousness a continuous stream of percepts or is it discrete, occurring only at certain moments in time? This question has puzzled philosophers, psychologists, and neuroscientists for centuries. Both hypotheses have fallen repeatedly in and out of fa ...

In crowding, the perception of an object deteriorates in the presence of nearby elements. Obviously, crowding is a ubiquitous phenomenon, since elements are rarely seen in isolation. Despite this ubiquity, there exists no consensus on how to model crowding ...

Perceptual learning is usually specific for the encoded stimuli. For example, improvements in performance for a certain stimulus do not transfer if the stimulus is rotated by 90 degree or is presented at a different location. These findings are usually tak ...

Perception of an element can be strongly modulated by surround. Likewise, neural firing of a neuron can strongly be influenced by stimuli outside the classical receptive field. Contextual modulation is often seen as a limitation of the visual system, where ...

Schizophrenia impairs cognitive functions as much as perception. For example, patients perceive global motion in random dot kinematograms less strongly, because, as it is argued, the integration of the dots into a single Gestalt is complex and therefore de ...

The obvious symptoms of schizophrenia are hallucinations, delusions, and cognitive dysfunctions. However, schizophrenia patients have many other abnormalities, including visual impairments. Visual paradigms are versatile tools of schizophrenia research bec ...

The developed world is aging faster than ever before. Even in the absence of neurodegenerative disease, aging affects all kinds of human functions including perception and cognition. In most perceptual studies, one paradigm is tested and it is usually foun ...

How the brain integrates visual information across time into coherent percepts is an open question. Here, we investigated this integration using a feature fusion paradigm. In feature fusion, two stimuli are presented in immediate succession. The stimuli ar ...

In most models of perceptual learning, the amount of improvement of performance does not depend on the regime of stimulus presentations, but only on the sheer number of trials. Here, we kept the number of stimulus presentations constant while varying the n ...

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have revolutionized computer science and are now widely used for neuroscientific research. A hot debate has ensued about the usefulness of DNNs as neuroscientific models of the human visual system; the debate centers on to what ...

In crowding, the perception of a target deteriorates in the presence of clutter. Crowding is usually explained within the framework of object recognition, where processing proceeds in a hierarchical and feedforward fashion from the analysis of low level fe ...
