Older adults often perform worse than younger adults on prospective memory tasks, but the exact mechanisms remain elusive. Participants had to indicate whether a letter in the center of gaze is a vocal or a consonant (ongoing task). The prospective memory ...

Humans make two to four rapid eye movements (saccades) per second, which, surprisingly, does not lead to abrupt changes in vision. To the contrary, we perceive a stable world. Hence, an important question is how information is integrated across saccades. T ...

The strength of visual backward masking depends on the stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) between target and mask. Recently, it was shown that the conjoint spatial layout of target and mask is as crucial as SOA. Particularly, masking strength depends on wheth ...

In spite of more than 100 years of research, the mechanisms underlying visual masking are still unknown. In recent publications, we introduced an unmasking paradigm involving the fusion of features that revealed interesting spatial characteristics. Here, w ...

Classically, the perception of a visual target is explained by small local circuits, which sample information from a nar- row region around the target. For example, in visual crowding it was proposed that flankers can interfere with the target only when th ...

Schizophrenia impairs cognitive function as much as perception. For example, patients perceive global motion in random dot kinematograms less strongly, because the integration of the dots into a single Gestalt is complex (e.g., Chen, Nakayama, Levy, Matthy ...

Visual deficits are core deficits of schizophrenia. Classically, deficits are determined with demanding psychophysical tasks requiring fine-grained spatial or temporal resolution. Less is known about holistic processing. Here, we employed the Leuven Embedd ...

In a typical experiment on decision making, one out of two possible stimuli is displayed and observers decide which one was presented. Recently, Stanford and colleagues (2010) introduced a new variant of this classical one-stimulus presentation paradigm to ...

Schizophrenia is a heterogeneous disease strongly influenced by genetic factors. We have previously shown that visual backward masking (VBM) is a very sensitive endophenotype of schizophrenia (Chkonia et al., 2010). Importantly, not only patients but also ...

Visual backward masking is a versatile tool for understanding principles and limitations of visual information processing in the human brain. However, the mechanisms underlying masking are still poorly understood. In the current contribution, the authors s ...

The visibility of a target can be strongly affected by a trailing mask. Research on visual backward masking has typically focused on the temporal characteristics of masking, whereas non-basic spatial aspects have received much less attention. However, rece ...

Performance on a target can be modified by contextual elements. For example, thresholds strongly increase when a vernier is flanked by two lines. Increasing the number of flankers reduces contextual interference when the flankers are shorter or longer than ...

Visual backward masking is a well suited technique to investigate intact and deficient visual information processing. Whereas visual backward masking has been studied extensively in adult populations, there is only a limited number of investigations in ado ...

Gender differences are well established in cognition and somato-sensation, but there are almost no studies on gender differences in visual perception. One reason is that sample size is often small because effect sizes are large. Small samples are not well ...

Vision is a constructive process. For example, a square, flashed at two distinct locations one after the other, appears to move smoothly between the two locations rather than as two separate flashes (apparent motion). Apparent motion is usually perceived a ...

In perceptual learning, performance often improves within a short time if only one stimulus variant is presented, such as a line bisection stimulus with one outer-line-distance. However, performance stagnates if two bisection stimuli with two outer-line-di ...

In serial dependence (SD), features of a present stimulus are judged as similar to previously presented ones. This bias is often explained by a continuity field (CF) in perception, combining similar stimuli in an extended region of space (∼ 15°) and time ( ...

When two similar visual stimuli are presented in rapid succession at the same location, they fuse. For example, a red and a green disk are perceived as one single yellow disk. Likewise, verniers with opposite offset directions are perceived as one vernier ...

Pre-stimulus brain activity is thought to modulate visual perception. However, the nature of this modulation remains debated. In particular, the use of paradigms with very brief and weak stimuli complicates a univocal understanding. Here we focus on phenom ...
