Phonological deficits in dyslexia are well documented. However, there is an ongoing discussion about whether visual deficits limit the reading skills of people with dyslexia. Here, we investigated visual crowding and backward masking. We presented a Vernie ...

In perceptual learning, performance usually improves when observers train with one type of stimulus, for example, a bisection stimulus. Roving denotes the situation when, instead of one, two or more types of stimuli are presented randomly interleaved, for ...

In cognition, common factors play a crucial role. For example, different types of intelligence are highly correlated, pointing to a common factor, which is often called g. One might expect that a similar common factor would also exist for vision. Surprisin ...

When a right offset vernier is immediately followed by a left offset vernier (or vice versa), only one vernier is perceived. Feature fusion has occurred. In feature fusion, observers cannot resolve the two verniers individually. Subjects perform at chance ...

We recently found only weak correlations between the susceptibility to various visual illusions. However, we observed strong correlations among different variants of an illusion, suggesting that the visual space of illusions includes several illusion-speci ...

In perceptual learning, performance improves when stimuli are presented over and over again. In a bisection task, for example, two vertical outer lines delineate an interval which is bisected by a centre line. Observers indicate whether this centre line is ...

In crowding, perception of a target deteriorates in the presence of nearby flankers. Crowding can be undone when additional flankers are presented, an effect known as uncrowding, which occurs when the flankers group with each other and ungroup from the tar ...

#TheDress is remarkable in two aspects. First, there is a bimodal split of the population in the perception of the dress's colors (white/gold vs. black/blue). Second, whereas interobserver variance is high, intra-observer variance is low, i. e., the percep ...

How features are attributed to objects is one of the most puzzling issues in the neurosciences. A deeply entrenched view is that features are perceived at the locations where they are presented. Here, we show that features in motion displays can be systema ...

In crowding, perception of a target is deteriorated by flanking elements. Crowding is usually explained by pooling models where target and flanker signals are averaged. We show here that crowding is rather determined by grouping and good Gestalt. We determ ...

The motion of parts of an object is usually perceived relative to the object, i.e., nonretinotopically, rather than in retinal coordinates. For example, we perceive a reflector to rotate on the wheel of a moving bicycle even though its trajectory is cycloi ...

The 1990s, the "decade of the brain", witnessed major advances in the study of visual perception, cognition, and consciousness. Impressive techniques in neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, neuropsychology, electrophysiology, psychophysics and brain-imaging were ...

Most models of vision focus either on the spatial or temporal aspects of visual processing and neglect the other component. A variety of studies have shown, however, that spatial and temporal processing cannot easily be separated. The shine-through effect ...

In crowding, target perception deteriorates in the presence of flanking elements. Crowding is classically explained by low-level mechanisms such as pooling or feature substitution. However, we have previously shown that perceptual grouping between the targ ...

Flankers can strongly deteriorate performance on a target (crowding). The neural mechanisms of crowding are largely unknown. We have recently shown that the N1 component of the EEG is suppressed during crowding. Because it is difficult to disentangle the n ...

Presenting two or more stimulus types randomly interleaved, so-called roving stimuli, disrupts perceptual learning in many paradigms. It was recently reported that learning with disrupting stimuli types is possible when stimuli are presented in an alternat ...
