The role and coexistence of oxidative stress (OS) and inflammation in type C hepatic encephalopathy (C HE) is a subject of intense debate. Under normal conditions the physiological levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species are controlled by the count ...

Purpose At 7 Tesla (T), conventional static field (B0) projection mapping techniques, e.g., FASTMAP, FASTESTMAP, lead to elevated specific absorption rates (SAR), requiring longer total acquisition times (TA). In this work, the series of adiabatic pulses n ...

Barbiturates are regularly used as an anesthetic for animal experimentation and clinical procedures and are frequently provided with solubilizing compounds, such as ethanol and propylene glycol, which have been reported to affect brain function and, in the ...

Specialized glucosensing neurons are present in the hypothalamus, some of which neighbor the median eminence, where the blood–brain barrier has been reported leaky. A leaky blood–brain barrier implies high tissue glucose levels and obviates a role for endo ...

Proton spectroscopy allows the simultaneous quantification of a high number of metabolite concentrations termed the neurochemical profile. The spin echo full intensity acquired localization (SPECIAL) scheme with an echo time of 2.7 ms was used at 9.4T for ...

PurposeTo improve the detection and subsequent estimation of the diffusion properties of strongly J-coupled metabolites in diffusion-weighted MRS (DWS).MethodsA new sequence for single-voxel diffusion-weighted 1H MR spectroscopy, named DW-SPECIAL, is propo ...

The only currently available method to measure brain glycogen in vivo is C-13 NMR spectroscopy. Incorporation of C-13-labeled glucose (Glc) is necessary to allow glycogen measurement, but might be affected by turnover changes. Our aim was to measure glycog ...

BACKGROUND: Acetate metabolism in skeletal muscle is regulated by acetylCoA synthetase (ACS). The main function of ACS is to provide cells with acetylCoA, a key molecule for numerous metabolic pathways including fatty acid and cholesterol synthesis and the ...

Carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy in combination with the infusion of (13)C-labeled precursors is a unique approach to study in vivo brain energy metabolism. Incorporating the maximum information available from in vivo localized (13)C spect ...

Three-dimensional segmented echo planar imaging (3D-EPI) is a promising approach for high-resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging, as it provides an increased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at similar temporal resolution to traditional multislice 2D- ...

Purpose In this work, we combine three-dimensional echo planar imaging (3D-EPI) with controlled aliasing to substantially increase temporal resolution in whole-brain functional MRI (fMRI) while minimizing geometry-factor (g-factor) losses. Theory and Metho ...

While chronic hypoglycaemia has been reported to increase unidirectional glucose transport across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and to increase GLUT1 expression at the endothelium, the effect on steady-state brain d-glucose and brain glycogen content is cu ...

Mitochondrial dysfunction was highlighted as a crucial vulnerability factor for the development of depression. However, systemic studies assessing stress-induced changes in mitochondria-associated genes in brain regions relevant to depression symptomatolog ...

PURPOSE: At high magnetic field strengths (B0 >/= 3 T), the shorter radiofrequency wavelength produces an inhomogeneous distribution of the transmit magnetic field. This can lead to variable contrast across the brain which is particularly pronounced in T2 ...

This work explores a concept for motion detection in brain MR examinations using high channel-count RF coil arrays. It applies ultrashort (< 100 mu sec) free induction decay signals, making use of the knowledge that motion induces variations in these signa ...

Glioma models have provided important insights into human brain cancers. Among the investigative tools, MRI has allowed their characterization and diagnosis. In this study, we investigated whether diffusion MRI might be a useful technique for early detecti ...

In this manuscript, the use of quantitative imaging at ultra-high field is evaluated as a mean to study cyto and myelo-architecture of the cortex. The quantitative contrasts used are the longitudinal relaxation rate (R1), apparent transverse relaxation rat ...

Background: Glutathione (GSH) is the major cellular redox-regulator and antioxidant. Redox-imbalance due to genetically impaired GSH synthesis is among the risk factors for schizophrenia. Here we used a mouse model with chronic GSH deficit induced by knock ...

The treatments for ischemic stroke can only be administered in a narrow time-window. However, the ischemia onset time is unknown in ~30% of stroke patients (wake-up strokes). The objective of this study was to determine whether MR spectra of ischemic brain ...

To date, only a couple of functional MR spectroscopy (fMRS) studies were conducted in rats. Due to the low temporal resolution of 1H-MRS techniques, prolonged stimulation paradigms are necessary for investigating the metabolic outcome in the rat brain duri ...
