Starting from a single band Hubbard model in the Wannier function basis, we revisit the problem of the ligand contribution to exchange and derive explicit formulas for the exchange integrals in metal oxide compounds in terms of atomic parameters that can b ...

Motivated by the numerous examples of 1/3 magnetization plateaux in the triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet with spins ranging from 1/2 to 5/2, we revisit the semiclassical calculation of the magnetization curve of that model, with the aim of com ...

At the liquid-gas phase transition in water, the density has a discontinuity at atmospheric pressure; however, the line of these first-order transitions defined by increasing the applied pressure terminates at the critical point(1), a concept ubiquitous in ...

We investigate the thermodynamic properties of a field-induced supersolid phase in a 2D quantum antiferromagnet model. Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations, a very rich phase diagram is mapped out in the temperature—magnetic-field plane, with an extended ...

We perform a systematic DMRG investigation of the two natural spin-1 generalizations of the spin-1/2 Majumdar-Ghosh chain, the spin-1 J(1)-J(2) Heisenberg chain, where J(2) is a next-nearest-neighbor Heisenberg coupling, and the spin-1 J(1)-J(3) model, whe ...

Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations along with higher-order spin-wave theory, bond-operator and strong-coupling expansions, we analyze the dynamical spin structure factor of the spin-half Heisenberg model on the square-lattice bilayer. We identify distin ...

Under magnetic fields, quantum magnets often undergo exotic phase transitions with various kinds of order. The discovery of a sequence of fractional magnetization plateaus in the Shastry-Sutherland compound SrCu2(BO3)(2) has played a central role in the hi ...

Quantum antiferromagnets have proven to be some of the cleanest realizations available for theoretical, numerical, and experimental studies of quantum fluctuation effects. At finite temperatures, however, the additional effects of thermal fluctuations in t ...

We numerically investigate the guiding center structure factors of several states in the Read-Rezayi family. Using exact diagonalizations on the torus and density matrix renormalization group on an infinite cylinder, we test a conjecture proposed in Can et ...

Motivated by the absence of both spin freezing and a cooperative Jahn-Teller effect at the lowest measured temperatures, we study the ground state of Ba3CuSb2O9. We solve a general spin-orbital model on both the honeycomb and the decorated honeycomb lattic ...

We show that correlated hopping of triplets, which is often the dominant source of kinetic energy in dimer-based frustrated quantum magnets, produces a remarkably strong tendency to form supersolid phases in a magnetic field. These phases are characterized ...

Motivated by the ongoing investigation of SrCu2(BO3)(2) under pressure, we study a variant of the two-dimensional Shastry-Sutherland (SS) spin-1/2 model with two types of dimers. Combined with the frustration of the SS model, this modification induces, in ...

Using a specially designed Monte Carlo algorithm with directed loops, we investigate the triangular lattice Ising antiferromagnet with coupling beyond the nearest neighbors. We show that the first-order transition from the stripe state to the paramagnet ca ...

Since the discovery of superfluidity in He-4 and Landau's phenomenological theory, the relationship between Bose condensation and superfluidity has been intensely debated. He-4 is known by now to be both superfluid and condensed at low temperature, and mor ...

We propose that the inhomogeneous patterns seen by STM in some underdoped superconducting cuprates could be related to a bond-order-wave instability of the staggered flux state, one of the most studied “normal” state proposed to compete with the d-wave RVB ...

We show that Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions can substantially modify the phase diagram of spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladders in a magnetic field provided they compete with exchange. For nonfrustrated ladders, they induce a local magnetization along the D ...

We investigate a species selective cooling process of a trapped SU(N) Fermi gas using entropy redistribution during adiabatic loading of an optical lattice. Using high-temperature expansion of the Hubbard model, we show that when a subset N-A < N of the si ...

Magnetic topological insulators and semimetals are a class of crystalline solids whose properties are strongly influenced by the coupling between non-trivial electronic topology and magnetic spin configurations. Such materials can host exotic electromagnet ...

Using density-functional theory (DFT) band-structure calculations, we study the crystal structure, lattice dynamics, and magnetic interactions in the Shastry-Sutherland magnet SrCu2(BO3)(2) under pressure, concentrating on experimentally relevant pressures ...

In order to understand the nature of the two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensed (BEC) phase in BaCuSi2O6, we performed detailed Cu-63 and Si-29 NMR above the critical magnetic field, H-c1 = 23.4 T. The two different alternating layers present in the syste ...
