In this paper, we present a theoretical analysis of the propagation effects of lightning electromagnetic fields over a mountainous terrain. The analysis is supported by experimental observations consisting of simultaneous records of lightning currents and ...

In this paper, the problem of dispatching the operation of a distribution feeder comprising a set of heterogeneous resources is investigated. In particular, the main objective is to track a 5-minute resolution trajectory, called the \textit{dispatch plan} ...

This paper proposes and experimentally validates a control algorithm for a grid-connected battery energy storage system (BESS) to level the consumption of a group of prosumers and dispatch their aggregated operation. The control strategy is layered in a tw ...

This paper is framed within the context of intra-day optimal control of polygeneration systems and storage connected to microgrids. In particular, the paper proposes an optimal control strategy that accounts for both electrical and thermal processes taking ...

Linear electromagnetic motors (LEMs) have been proposed, developed and used to propel high-speed (i.e. speed > 100 m/s) levitating vehicles. However, few real implementations have demonstrated the feasibility of these machines at such speeds. Furthermore, ...

The number of transient operations in hydraulic machinery connected to power grid, notably start-ups and shut-downs, has observed a substantial increase in recent decades, primarily driven by the global shift toward intermittent renewable energy sources. S ...

Having sufficient grid-forming sources is one of the necessary conditions to guarantee the stability in a power system hosting a very large share of inverter-based generation. The grid-forming function has been historically fulfilled by synchronous machine ...

The research of this paper is framed in the context of multi-layered, optimization-based approaches for microgrid control. Specifically, we focus on the design of real-time objectives that are typically proxies of long-term ones. Examples include tracking ...

The paper proposes a specific algorithm for the pre-estimation filtering of bad data (BD) in PMU-based power systems linear State Estimators (SEs). The approach is framed in the context of the so-called real-time SEs that take advantage of the high measure ...

Aggregation of electric resources is a fundamental function for the operation of power grids at different time scales. In the context of a recently proposed framework for the real-time control of microgrids with explicit power setpoints, we define and form ...

We intend to prove that PMU-based state estimation processes for active distribution networks exhibit unique time determinism and refresh rate that make them suitable to satisfy the time-critical requirements of protections as well as the accuracy requirem ...

As fossil fuel reserves are limited in stock and there is an urgent call to reduce the carbon footprint, distribution grids urgently need to move towards heavy use of local and distributed generation of electricity using renewable energy sources. Another p ...

The literature on the subject of synchrophasor estimation (SE) algorithms has discussed the use of interpolated discrete Fourier transform (IpDFT) as an approach capable to find an optimal tradeoff between SE accuracy, response time, and computational comp ...

The paper assesses the influence of equivalent circuit battery models on the optimal design of the propulsion system of an energy-autonomous Hyperloop capsule. By knowing a pre-determined payload to be transported along pre-determined trajectories, the pro ...

A method for dispatching an operation of a distribution feeder of electrical power into a grid with heterogeneous prosumers, the method comprising the steps of establishing a dispatch plan on a computer by using forecast data of an aggregated consumption a ...

Thanks to the rapid growth of multiphase drives (MPDs), multiphase (MP) rotating electrical machines have gained popularity in the scientific community, demonstrating several advantages compared to traditional three-phase ones. Although MP rotating machine ...

Microgrids and, in general, active distribution networks require ultra-short-term prediction, i.e., for subsecond time scales, for specific control decisions. Conventional forecasting methodologies are not effective at such time scales. To address this iss ...

We propose and experimentally validate a process to dispatch the operation of a distribution feeder with heterogeneous prosumers according to a trajectory with 5 min resolution, called dispatch plan, established the day before the operation. The controllab ...

Full-wave numerical electromagnetic analysis (NEA) methods are defined as methodologies allowing the direct numerical solution of Maxwell's equations in both frequency and time domain. These methods are becoming the most promising approach to study complex ...
