This paper aims at proving the application of the fault location method based on the Electromagnetic Time Reversal (EMTR) to multi-terminal HVDC (MTDC) networks. In particular, the paper integrates the EMTR fault location technique with the protection sche ...

Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) has an important role in Active Distribution Networks (ADNs). Within this context this paper focuses on the problem of ESSs optimal siting and sizing. Following similar approaches already proposed by the Authors, this paper us ...

The computation of lightning-originated surges on overhead power lines due to nearby lightning return strokes requires accurate models for the calculation of both the incident lightning electromagnetic pulse (LEMP) and the coupling of this field with the l ...

With the integration of distributed energy resources and the trend towards low-inertia power grids, the frequency and severity of grid dynamics is expected to increase. Conventional phasor-based signal processing methods are proving to be insufficient in t ...

The paper discusses the model identification, validation and experimental testing of current-to-voltage dynamic circuit models for a grid-connected MW-class battery. The model refers to an utility-scale 720 kVA/560 kWh battery energy storage system (BESS) ...

This paper presents an application of the Electro-magnetic Time Reversal (EMTR) in changing media to identify the fault location along a single-conductor transmission line. It is shown that the time-reversed quantities exhibit a property, called Mirrored M ...

This paper proposes a generic and unified model of the power flow (PF) problem for multiterminal hybrid AC/DC networks. The proposed model is an extension of the standard AC-PF. The DC network is treated as an AC one and, in addition to the Slack, PV and P ...

Protection of tapped transmission lines with grounded neutrals has been always a challenging problem, usually resulting in compromise solutions. This type of lines may be protected by pilot relaying requiring dedicated and reliable telecommunication links. ...

This paper presents statistical distributions of lightning current parameters based on the lightning current and current-derivative waveforms measured at the Säntis Tower site in 2010 and 2011. The total number of flashes analyzed in this study was 167, wh ...

The thermal runaway of Lithium-ion batteries can result in severe accidents hindering their adoption and is, therefore, a cause for concern. Monitoring the temperature of the cells in a battery is one of the most effective methods to anticipate a thermal r ...

Within the context of ancillary services for Active Distribution Networks (ADNs), application of intelligent control techniques is required in order to achieve specific operation objectives. Despite their differences, most control mechanisms proposed in th ...

The high penetration of electric vehicles (EVs) charging stations (CSs), together with the progressive availability of distributed energy resources, increases the risk of grid overloading and power-quality degradation. Real-time control has been advocated ...

We use a finite element method (FEM) to evaluate the effect of a horizontally stratified two-layer ground on underground lightning electromagnetic fields and their induced currents on the shield of buried cables. It is shown that the azimuthal component of ...

The paper focuses on the extension to series-compensated multiconductor transmission lines of a new fault location method based on the Electromagnetic Time Reversal (EMTR) theory. The applicability of the EMTR theory to locate faults is first summarized. T ...

By using the electromagnetic time reversal (EMTR) theory, the paper studies its properties in order to derive a new fault location method to be used in power networks. It is shown that, in the reversed-time stage, the current signal observed at the true fa ...

Electromagnetic time reversal (EMTR)-based methods have been applied to the problem of fault location in power networks since 2012. Over the past decade, considerable theoretical investigations have led to a continuous improvement of the EMTR method in ter ...

The accuracy of state estimators using the Kalman Filter (KF) is largely influenced by the measurement and the process noise covariance matrices. The former can be directly inferred from the available measurement devices whilst the latter needs to be asses ...

This paper presents a method for the optimal siting and sizing of energy storage systems (ESSs) in active distribution networks (ADNs) to achieve their dispatchability. The problem formulation accounts for the uncertainty inherent to the stochastic nature ...

Renewable energy sources are generally interfaced with the electric distribution and transmission grid via power converters. The displacement of the traditional generating plants requires the new resources to be involved in the grid control strategy. This ...

We consider the problem of controlling heteroge-neous controllable resources of a distribution network with the objective of achieving a certain power flow at the grid connection point while respecting local grid constraints. The problem is formulated as a ...
