Antigens derived from apoptotic cell debris can drive clonal T-cell deletion or anergy, and antigens chemically coupled ex vivo to apoptotic cell surfaces have been shown correspondingly to induce tolerance on infusion. Reasoning that a large number of ery ...

In the past decade, nanomaterials have made their way into a variety of technologies in solar energy, enhancing the performance by taking advantage of the phenomena inherent to the nanoscale. Recent examples exploit plasmonic core/shell nanoparticles to ac ...

We present an optical approach for intracellular delivery of molecules contained within oxidation-sensitive polymersomes. The photosensitizer ethyl eosin is associated with the polymersome membrane to oxidatively increase the hydrophilicity of the hydropho ...

A combined strategy using bioluminescence imaging, bone densitometry and histology was used to analyze the bone regeneration capacity of human bone marrow (hBMSC) and adipose tissue (hAMSC) mesenchymal stem cells, seeded in an osteoconductive arginine-glyc ...

Previously we reported emulsion polymerization of propylene sulfide with Pluronic F127 as an emulsifier, yielding nanoparticles (NPs) in the 25 nm size range. Immunologically functional NPs were prepared by adding an antigen Pluronic conjugate to the polym ...

With a view toward reduction of graft loss, we explored pancreatic islet transplantation within fibrin matrices rendered pro-angiogenic by incorporation of minimal doses of vascular endothelial growth factor-A165 and platelet-derived growth factor-BB prese ...

Background: The development of nanoparticulate antigen-delivery systems is an important emerging area of vaccinology, being sought to amplify immune responses to recombinant antigens that are poorly immunogenic. Nanoparticle size may play an important role ...

Vaccines that drive robust T-cell immunity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) are needed both for prophylactic and therapeutic purposes. We have recently developed a synthetic vaccine delivery platform with Pluronic-stabilized polypropylene sulfide n ...

An emerging strategy in preventing and treating airway allergy consists of modulating the immune response induced against allergens in the lungs. CpG oligodeoxynucleotides have been investigated in airway allergy studies, but even if promising, efficacy re ...

Photocatalytic lithography couples light with photoreactive coated mask materials to pattern surface chemistry. We excite porphyrins to create radical species that photocatalytically oxidize, and thereby pattern, chemistries in the local vicinity. The tech ...

Polymeric nanoparticle technology has evolved from drug carrier design to advanced multifunctional macromolecular structures. They enable drug delivery and release of a bioactive under spatio-temporal control rather than just passive release by a long-circ ...

Encapsulation of islets of Langerhans may represent a way to transplant islets in the absence of immunosuppression. Traditional methods for encapsulation lead to diffusional limitations imposed by the size of the capsules (600-1,000 m in diameter), which r ...

Fibrin has been long used clinically for hemostasis and sealing, yet extension of use in other applications has been limited due to its relatively rapid resorption in vivo, even with addition of aprotinin or other protease inhibitors. We report an engineer ...

The target autoantigens in several organ-specific autoimmune diseases, including type 1 diabetes (T1D), are intracellular membrane proteins, whose initial encounter with the immune system is poorly understood. Here we propose a new model for how these prot ...

The treatment of congenital malformations or injuries of the urethra using existing autologous tissues can be associated with post-operative complications. Using rat-tail collagen, we have engineered an acellular high-density collagen tube. These tubes wer ...

Homeostatic antigen presentation by hepatic antigen-presenting cells, which results in tolerogenic T-cell education, could be exploited to induce antigen-specific immunological tolerance. Here we show that antigens modified with polymeric forms of either N ...

The ability of the biomimetic peptides YIGSR, PHSRN and RGD to selectively affect adhesion and migration of human microvascular endothelial cells (MVEC) and vascular smooth muscle cells (HVSMC) was evaluated. Cell mobility was quantified by time-lapse vide ...

We report optimization of a serum- and feeder-free, three-dimensional (3D) niche created with a synthetic polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based extracellular matrix for self-renewal of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). Three hESC lines (H9, H1 and Novo) were c ...

Despite extensive research, pro-angiogenic drugs have failed to translate clinically, and therapeutic angiogenesis, which has potential in the treatment of various cardiovascular diseases, remains a major challenge. Physiologically, angiogenesis - the proc ...

We here report improved synthesis and in vitro interactions of amphiphilic hydrogel nanoparticles with the macrophage cell line J774A.1. Nanoparticles comprising dispersed hydrophobic nanodomains of poly(propylene glycol) within a continuous phase of hydro ...
