The construction of a supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) plant inside or in close proximity to a sugarcane biorefinery producing first and second generation ethanol demonstrated to be very promising, increasing the economic potential of the SFE process i ...

A detailed thermo-economic model considering different technological alternatives for thermochemical production of Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) from lignocellulosic biomass is presented. First, candidate technology for processes based on biomass gasificatio ...

A successful decarbonization of the European Union, coupled with a high integration of renewable energy and ambitious targets for energy efficiency, can only be reached with a significant contribution from transport. This sector currently represents a quar ...

Industrial operations consume energy and water in large quantities without accounting for potential economic and environmental burdens on future generations. Consumption of energy (mainly in the form of high pressure steam) and water (in the form of proces ...

The present study investigates the potential conversion of sugarcane into ethanol and synthetic natural gas. The considered conversion path consists in combining ethanol first and second generation ethanol production plant with a catalytic supercritical wa ...

The growing trend of the cruise ship industry, together with increasing concerns over its impact on the environment, makes these ships a much relevant target for efforts toward increasing ship energy efficiency, thus ultimately reducing fuel consumption an ...

In light of the energy transition, it becomes a widespread solution to decentralize and to decarbonize energy systems. However, limited transformer capacities are a hurdle for large-scale integration of solar energy in the electricity grid. The aim of this ...

A new gas turbine-fuel cell Hybrid Cycle is proposed. The fuel cell advantageously operates close or under atmospheric pressure and is fully integrated with the gas turbine that is based on an Inverted Brayton-Joule Cycle. The idea of the invention is to c ...

Energy communities are key actors in the energy transition since they optimally interconnect renewable energy capacities with the consumers. Despite versatile objectives, they usually aim at improving the self-consumption of renewable electricity within lo ...

Chemical process optimization problems often have multiple and conflicting objectives, such as capital cost, operating cost, production cost, profit, energy consumptions and environmental impacts. In such cases, Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) is suitab ...

Nanocellulose, which is a disintegration product of plant cellulose, has recently come to public attention because of its great mechanical properties combined with renewability and biodegradability. From an environmental point-of-view, nanocellulose has sh ...

A circular economy refers to an industrial economy with a cradle to cradle vision, shifting from the use of fossil fuels towards renewable energy, minimizing the use of toxic chemicals and reducing waste by recycling through careful system design. The conc ...

Modern concepts for grids are being developed owing to the increasing stress put on the electrical producers and the burgeoning need for thermal demands due to varying climate conditions. The increasing awareness of the depletion of natural resources has a ...

The shipping industry was responsible for about 3% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2018. In this context, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has established stringent targets to reduce GHG emissions by at least 50% by 2050 compared t ...

This paper proposes a general superstructure and a Mixed-Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP) model for the synthesis and simultaneous optimisation and Heat Integration (HI) of Single- and Multiple Effect Evaporation (SEE/MEE) systems including Mechanical ...

Biomass chemical conversion processes allow the production of solid, liquid and gaseous biofuels, which can substitute almost any kind of fossil fuel and the associated greenhouse gas emissions. Despite this potential, high investment costs and conversion ...

This paper presents a model-based investigation to handle the fundamental issues for the design of co-electrolysis based power-to-methane at the levels of both the stack and system: the role of CO2 in co-electrolysis, the benefits of employing pressurized ...

Within the challenge of greenhouse gas reduction, hydrogen is regarded as a promising decarbonized energy vector. The hydrogen production by natural gas reforming and lignocellulosic biomass gasification are systematically analyzed by developing thermo-eco ...

Lignocellulosic biomass is a potential renewable resource for production of high-value, sustainable products. Furfural is among the important bio-based chemicals in biorefineries. However, the conventional process of furfural production using a reaction-se ...

An optimization methodology based on Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) has been developed for simultaneous optimization of water and energy (SOWE) in industrial processes. The superstructure integrates non-water process thermal streams and optimizes ...
