Steam is a key energy vector for industrial sites, most commonly used for process heating and cooling, cogeneration of heat and mechanical power as a motive fluid or for stripping. Steam networks are used to carry steam from producers to consumers and betw ...

Multi-objective optimisation (MOO) of super-structured process designs are expensive in CPU- time because of the high number of potential configurations and operation conditions to be calculated. Thus single process units are generally represented by simpl ...

Ammonia serves as a promising hydrogen carrier and energy storage medium due to its high hydrogen content, ease of transport, and well-established production infrastructure. This study presents a comprehensive techno-economic analysis of ammonia-to‑hydroge ...

Power-to-methane technologies have been regarded as a promising alternative to offer small or large-scale, long-timescale (daily/weekly/seasonal) energy storage as well as the opportunity of utilizing CO2. The performance of the core component, the electro ...

Solid oxide fuel cell-gas turbine (SOFC-GT) hybrid system is an efficient and potential method for distributed energy supply. The system layout, component operating parameters, system-level heat integration, component selection and design, etc., determine ...

This study addresses the thermo economic assessment of a biomass gasification, gas cleaning and energy conversion process, with particular attention given to tar control and the communication of the process design rationale. Product distributions were esti ...

This work presents solutions for the holistic utilization of lignocellulosic biomass based on the "lignin first " concept. Biomass is fractionated by employing gamma-Valerolactone (GVL) and formaldehyde solvents to effectively extract and protect the ligni ...

Within the global challenge of sustainable energy supply and greenhouse gas emissions mitigation, carbon capture and storage (CCS) and the deployment of renewable resources are considered as promising solutions. In this context, the production of ammonia m ...

Lignocellulosic biorefineries are the best non-petroleum alternatives for a sustainable development. In the biorefinery process design, it is important to implement an algorithm that allows the systematic generation and the evaluation of energy conversion ...

The production of aluminium largely depends on the use of fossil fuels, resulting in the emission of significant amounts of greenhouse gases. As the aluminium industry is working towards decreasing its environmental burdens, the elimination of direct emiss ...

The development of electric vehicles is considered as one of the sustainable way in the automotive industry to reduce greenhouse gases emissions and to allow transportation sector to comply with environmental targets required in present and future years. D ...

The energy integration of brewery plants and urban agglomerations has many benefits in terms of rational energy use and reduced environmental impact, especially during scenarios of uncertain supply chain and volatile market prices. In fact, the diversifica ...

Urban systems account for about two-thirds of global primary energy consumption and energy-related greenhouse gas emissions, with a projected increasing trend. Deep geothermal energy and woody biomass can be used for the production of heat, electricity and ...

Solid oxide fuel cell technology shows great potential in generating electricity. However, insufficient steam in the stack can result in carbon deposition, accelerating cell degradation over prolonged operation. To prevent this, ensuring an adequate supply ...

The optimisation of distributed and renewable energy systems in buildings has shown that zero energy systems, using existing technologies, is within reach in the household sector where the thermal and the systems can support each other to increase renewabl ...

Membrane separation may substitute conventional energy intensive technologies, and it could have cost benefits and lower environmental footprints. Several membrane processes have been developed to achieve higher purity and recovery of products. This study ...

To answer the growing demand for data computing, data storage and data transmission, the current trend is to construct centralized hyperscale data centers, whose power usage effectiveness (PUE) has substantially improved in recent years. Still, the operati ...

In this contribution, we propose an algorithm for replacing non-linear process simulation integrated in multi-level optimization of an energy system superstructure with surrogate models. With our approach, we demonstrate that surrogate models are a valid t ...

The glass industry faces critical decarbonisation challenges due to high energy demand and reliance on fossil fuels. This study presents a comprehensive techno-economic analysis of diverse decarbonisation pathways for flat glass production, including elect ...

In the context of the industrial shift towards carbon neutrality and electrification, high temperature heat pumps have emerged as feasible solutions for decarbonizing the heat supply at temperatures previously associated only to fired or resistive heating ...
