The increasing penetration of intermittent renewable power challenges the stability of the electrical grid, thus coal power plants are usually required to extend the operation range by reducing the minimum load. This work proposes a concept of coupling sol ...

This study contrasts two different approaches to inform European-scale decision-making to mitigate the environmental impacts of the end-of-life tires (ELT) management system. The first analysis is a traditional life cycle assessment (LCA) that compares the ...

This paper addresses a methodology for the optimal conceptual design of thermochemical fuel production processes from biomass. A decomposed modelling approach with separate energy-flow, energy-integration and economic models are coupled with a multi-object ...

Biomass resources can play an important role in the energy transition, being a dynamic feedstock that can be transformed either into solid, liquid or gaseous fuels. The biomass gasification is a versatile way to convert wastes into energy. In this work, th ...

Municipal solid waste is a mixture of urban and industrial waste, consisting of biodegradable fractions, such as food waste, waste wood or paper, but also fossil-based fractions, among which plastics, textiles, metals, glass and aluminum. Depending on the ...

Direct air-cooling condenser has attracted significant attention in the last decade due to the employment of Rankine-cycle based power plants from renewable (e.g., concentrated solar) or traditional (e.g., coal) heat sources in water-scarce areas. The opti ...

This study aims towards an improved estimation of annual heat demand of the building stock for an entire region. This requires the holistic representation of aspects influencing the heat demand of buildings, namely their geometry, fabric, users and surroun ...

Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell (SOEC) has attracted considerable attention for its potential scalability and high energy conversion efficiency. It is capable of electrolyzing both H2O and CO2 simultaneously, generating syngas that can be further synthesized ...

The large-scale production of platform chemicals from biomass requires efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable methods. Here, we present three one-pot synthesis routes for producing diformylxylose (DFX), a sugar-based solvent and platform chemical, usin ...

A successful decarbonisation of the European Union, coupled with a high integration of renewable energy and ambitious targets for energy efficiency, can only be reached with a significant contribution from the transportation sector. It currently represents ...

The growing trend of the cruise ship industry, together with increasing concerns over its impact on the environment, makes these ships a much relevant target for the efforts toward increasing ship energy efficiency, thus ultimately reducing fuel consumptio ...

Municipal solid waste and waste plastics are currently perceived as an environmental threat. Thermovalorization and recycling are the primary technologies used for disposal, with re- searchers and practitioners advocating for one or the other, but far from ...

Previous studies have identified links between the urban form and the performance of urban energy systems. Land use and density are two important aspects of urban planning and design. This paper studies the relationship between these aspects and the perfor ...

Technology and energy saving potentials in the industrial sector are key data that policy-makers rely on to drive decision-making. A literature review reveals a distinct discrepancy between general potential estimation and detailed design studies. The form ...

Solid-oxide electrolyzer based power-to-methane is promising for large-scale energy storage as well as biogas upgrading by efficiently converting intermittent renewable power and CO2 (e.g., in biogas) into synthetic methane. Either air or pure oxygen can b ...

The alarming increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, primarily attributed to human-induced fossil fuel combustion for power generation, underscores the urgency for sustainable solutions. The solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is a promising candidate for ...

As the EU energy system transitions to low carbon, the technology choices should consider a broader set of criteria. The use of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) prevents burden shift across life cycle stages or impact categories, while the use of Energy System ...

Greenhouse gas emission mitigation is one of the main motivations for increasing the use of biomass in providing environmentally friendly value-added products. The pulp and paper industry is a promising sector for the integration of biorefinery pathways. A ...

First generation ethanol (1G) contributes to the majority of the ethanol produced worldwide, predominantly centered on corn and sugarcane. Nevertheless, several issues are regularly highlighted concerning the long-term sustainability of this technology, in ...

Energy transition is blurring the boundaries between the demand and supply sides with growing participation of prosumer resources. The intensifying pace of electrification and digitalization during the past decade tends to continue, leading to potential te ...
