Internal combustion engines are the most applied energy converters in passenger cars. In order to increase their efficiency, energy integration techniques are used to recover waste heat. An adapted methodology is required to design the organic Rankine cycl ...

Steam is a key energy vector for industrial sites, used for process heating, direct injection and stripping, tracing and cogeneration of mechanical power. Steam networks transport steam from producers to consumers and across different pressure levels. The ...

As the world shift towards sustainable energy solutions, solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) using non-carbon fuels like ammonia and hydrogen emerge as promising pathways to produce clean energy and enhance conversion efficiency. However, current implementation ...

To reduce the fossil-fuel consumption and the impacts of conventional ammonia production on climate change, green ammonia production processes using green hydrogen need to be investigated. For commercial production scale, potential alternatives can be base ...

This paper addresses a methodology for the optimal conceptual design of thermochemical fuel production processes from biomass. A decomposed modelling approach with separate energy-flow, energy-integration and economic models is presented and coupled to mul ...

Wastewater treatment and sludge disposal are responsible for considerable costs and emissions in a global scale. With population and urbanization growing, tackling the rational and efficient use of energy while fulfilling the desired effluent standards are ...

This document corresponds to the appendix of the paper Regionalisation in high share renewable energy system modelling by Schnidrig et al. in redaction, and is based on the Master thesis of Amara Slaymaker 2021, giving additional information about the meth ...

Current superstructure size for energy system design is increasing with computing facility improvement. Despite such approach allows to link and to analyse a lot of elements, demonstrating the advantage of a global optimization, non-negligible uncertaintie ...

The design of efficient energy systems, through the development of new technologies and the improvement of current ones, requires the use of rigorous process synthesis methods for generating and analysing design alternatives. We introduce a digital twin of ...

Various countries and communities are defining strategic energy plans driven by concerns related to climate change and security of energy supply. Energy models are needed to support this decision-making process. The long time horizon inherent to strategic ...

This paper presents an approach for combined mass and energy integration in process synthesis and illustrates it at the production of crude synthetic natural gas (SNG) from lignocellulosic biomass and its separation in a membrane cascade. Based on a genera ...

In this work, the conventional scenario of the black liquor (BL) concentration and combustion is compared with the BL upgrading gasification process for ammonia production. The chemical processes synthesis, modeling and simulation are performed by using As ...

Traditional control approaches heavily rely on hard-coded expert knowledge, complicating the development of optimal control solutions as system complexity increases. Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) offers a selflearning control solution, proving advantag ...

Environmentally sustainable and economically viable process and energy systems are imperative to a successful energy transition. Often, design configurations are derived from a global perspective, in which the individual needs and interests of actors withi ...

Background: The electricity production market benefits from combined cycles with their high efficiency. In the lower power range, Fuel Cells are a good candidate to combine with gas turbines. Such systems can achieve efficiencies of 60% and more. High tem ...

The purpose of this study is to evaluate, in terms of process integration, the centralised and decentralised pre-treatment of lignocellulosic biomass for its thermo-chemical conversion into liquid fuels through gasification and Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthe ...

This paper addresses the problem of modeling and estimating the cost of the heat exchanger network (HEN) in multi-period operation using pinch technique concepts. The developed method improves the vertical heat exchanges technique originally proposed by Ah ...

The goal of this paper is to evaluate the supply of sugarcane to mills and also the supply of green harvesting residues to second-generation ethanol plants under three different strategies: chopping, baling and integral harvesting. A dynamic model was deve ...

Biomass, bioenergy and negative emission technologies are inherent to the future design of energy systems. Urban clusters have a growing demand for fuel, heat and electricity, which is both a challenge and an opportunity for biomass-based technologies. The ...
