Renewable synthesis fuels play a crucial role in enabling a circular economy. This study assesses the environmental impacts of power-to-hydrogen and biomass-to-hydrogen routes, considering four hydrogen storage options: hydrogen, ammonia, methane, and meth ...

The integration of weather forecasts and demand prediction into the energy management system of buildings is usually achieved using a model-based predictive control. The performance of such control techniques strongly depends on the accuracy of the thermal ...

Within the global challenge of climate change mitigation, CO2 capture and storage is regarded as a potential option to reduce the CO2 emissions in power plants. The most common technology to capture CO2 is chemical absorption with amines, requiring however ...

In superstructure optimization of processes and energy systems, the design space is defined as the combination of unit considerations, process conditions and model parameters that might be subjected to uncertainty. Most of the time, decision makers are not ...

The combined sugar and ethanol production process from sugar cane is a paradigmatic application for energy integration strategies because of the high number of hot and cold streams involved, the external hot utility requirement at two temperature levels fo ...

The aim of this work is to increase the efficiency of industrial processes by using pinch analysis and process design methods. The main goals are the reduction of energy consumption, of the corresponding operating costs and of CO2 emissions. In this contex ...

This article presents a method aimed at tracking energy saving opportunities in the food-processing industry through a combination of top-down and bottom-up approaches. On the one hand, the top-down modelling method aims at correlating the measured energy ...

This article integrates solar potential in a given urban area for the competing technologies of Photovoltaic and thermal collectors. On an urban level, scalable from several buildings to whole cities, the authors examine the possibility of solar power inte ...

Different scenarios at different scales must be studied to help define long term policies to decarbonate our societies. In this work, we analyse the Belgian energy system in 2035 for different carbon emission targets, and accounting for electricity, heat, ...

This work proposes a novel hydrogen-based desalination system to replace fossil fuelbased plants. The system has a water-hydrogen nexus framework to achieve an efficient operation, providing electricity, potable water, and green hydrogen. Through optimal p ...

This paper presents a methodology to integrate life cycle assessment (LCA) in models used to design energy conversion systems. It is illustrated by an application to a thermo-economic model for the multi-objective optimization of synthetic natural gas (SNG ...

The performance of a direct air-cooling condenser under operation is rather complicated, as it is interactively affected by the operating conditions (e.g., the mode of air fans) and ambient conditions (e.g., temperature and wind speed). To understand the c ...

The recent geopolitical conflicts in Europe highlighted the sensibility of the current energy system to the volatility of energy carrier prices. In the prospect of defining robust energy system configurations to ensure energy supply stability, it is necess ...

In recent decades, energy efficiency has become one of the key issues facing industrial producers. Mounting economic, environmental and social factors motivate energy-intensive industries to improve their efficiency. Identifying energy saving retrofit oppo ...

The selection of an hybrid MSF/RO desalination plant depends on many factors, such as capital costs, electricity consumption, water conversion rate and local requirements. In order to provide the necessary information for the decision process, stand-alone ...

This paper proposes a new approach in the field of energy conversion systems analysis and synthesis. The method is based on a generic and multi-platform description syntax, that clearly separates the information concerning the physical behavior of the mode ...

This study focuses on the process integration of gasification in the thermo-chemical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into liquid fuels thorough gasification and Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis (biomass to liquids, BtL). Two main gasification technolo ...

This paper presents a targeting strategy to solve the heat load distribution (HLD) problem for large-scale plant by dividing the system into sub-systems while considering the heat transfer opportunities between them. The methodology is based on a sequentia ...

The Paris agreement is the first-ever universally accepted and legally binding agreement on global climate change. It is a bridge between today’s and climate-neutrality policies and strategies before the end of the century. However, government and private ...

A predictive optimal control system for micro-cogeneration in domestic applications has been developed. This system aims at integrating stochastic inhabitant behavior and meteorological conditions as well as modelling imprecisions, while defining operation ...
