Carbon capture and utilization are promising to tackle fossil-fuel depletion and climate change. CO2 hydrogenation can synthesize various chemicals and fuels, such as methanol, formic acid, urea, and methane. CO2-to-methanol integrated with solid-oxide ele ...

Biorefineries are multi-product facilities that convert biomass into a broad variety of products (energy, biofuels, chemicals, feed, and food). In this paper, a new systematic approach to select and rank different biorefinery conversion pathways is propose ...

Urban areas are characterized by a high concentration of economic and social activities. As a consequence, residential, commercial or industrial activities require an enormous rate of resources consumption. This can lead to environmentally-related problems ...

A new model for predicting the thermal and electrical performance of solid-oxide fuel cell(SOFC) cogeneration devices for residential buildings has been developed and demonstrated. This is a system-level model that considers the thermodynamic performance o ...

A water and carbon dioxide co-electrolyser system (1) comprising an anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyser (2) having at least one AEM electrolyser cell (2c) comprising a cathode (8), an anode (12) and an AEM membrane (16) separating the cathode from t ...

Process integration techniques have been applied to study a bisulfite mill which produces pulp and three additional by- products: bioethanol, lignosulfonate and yeast. Particular attention was devoted to the integration of the chemical recycling loops whic ...

Following the pioneering work of the AGS Tokyo half project, a geographical information system has been developed to model the energy requirements of an urban area. The purpose of the platform is to model with sufficient detail the energy services requirem ...

A gas processing and transport system comprising a natural gas pipeline (1), a plurality of gas conditioning stations (4) connected to the natural gas pipeline between an upstream main natural gas supply and a downstream consumer end, the gas processing st ...

Ancient Romans called urbs the set of buildings and infrastructures, and civitas the Roman citizens. Today instead, while the society is surfing the digital tsunami, urbs and civitas tend to become much closer, almost merging, that we might attempt to cond ...

With the change of energy regulations in the Geneva canton, exergy and exergy system efficiency entered into everyday life. Exergy is defined as the potential of maximum work which can ideally be obtained from each energy unit. This analysis allows coheren ...

Correction for 'Closing the balance - on the role of integrating biorefineries in the future energy system' by Julia Granacher et al., Sustainable Energy Fuels, 2023, 7, 4839-4854, https://doi.org/10.1039/D3SE00473B. ...

The current work focuses on the optimal design of biomass supply chains, addressing the conversion of raw materials into useful services. The latter include not only heat and power but also synthetic bio-based fuels (e.g. bio-SNG). Optimally pre-designed p ...

Steam networks and their utilities should be dimensioned to satisfy day-to-day demand as well peaks. Peaks can be caused by unit start-ups, extreme weather conditions or combinations of high demand from process units. During maintenance operations or unexp ...

La capture et le stockage du CO2 est considéré comme une alternative prometteuse pour atteindre les objectifs de réduction des émissions de carbone de la production d’électricité. En appliquant une stratégie d’optimisation thermo-environomique, le bénéfice ...
