The black liquor gasification integrated to chemical plants has shown potential for reducing the process irreversibility and promoting the decarbonization of this industrial sector. In the integrated chemical plants proposed in this work, the purpose is co ...

The pulp and paper (P&P) industry in industrially mature countries is facing a long-term crisis. Large and modern manufacturing facilities in tropical regions emerge as new competitors. The constant increase of energy costs has also contributed to the fina ...

Reducing energy consumption in the pulp and paper industry can lead to considerable cost savings. The three main points to consider when implementing an energy efficiency program in a mill are the reduction of the energy requirement, the energy recovery an ...

The electrification of private mobility is becoming a popular solution to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels. However, uncontrollable charging of a large electric vehicle fleet challenges the distribution grid due to transmission bottlenecks, voltage limi ...

The integration of steam cycles in the power plant industry aims at optimizing the conversion of the available heat into mechanical power. The proposed method uses process integration techniques and a multi-objective optimisation procedure to generate opti ...

With the advent of ChatGPT, natural language processing (NLP) models have gained tremendous interest from the research community and have been applied to a plethora of scientific domains like batteries, pharmaceuticals, recycling plastics, etc., to obtain ...

To limit climate change by reducing global greenhouse gas emissions, a transition away from fossil fuels is required. Biofuels represent a promising low carbon alternative for sectors that are hard to electrify, such as aviation. The integration of bio ref ...

Reversible Solid Oxide electrolyser (rSOE) is a promising solution for long-duration energy storage due to its exceptional features such as inherent reversibility, co-electrolysis capability in electrolysis mode, high efficiency, adaptability to multiple f ...

In the context of CO2 emissions reduction from power plants, CO2 removal from flue gas by chemical absorption with monoethanolamine is analyzed in detail. By applying process integration and multi-objective optimization techniques the influence of the oper ...

Due to the increasing concerns about the marked dependence on fossil resources and their intrinsic economic uncertainty, as well as motivated by more stringent environmental regulations, the pursuit of alternative energy resources for the synthetic fertili ...

This study aims to improve the energy efficiency of an industrial site by applying the thermodynamic analysis of distillation columns together with the total site integration (TSI). Several methods have been proposed in the literatures for the thermodynami ...

The aluminium remelting industry relies on natural gas to transform recycled aluminium into aluminium feedstock, entailing significant atmospheric emissions. Hydric resources are also affected as they are used as sinks of waste heat from the casting proces ...

The conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to ethanol is currently one of the most popular options for sustainable production of transportation fuel from renewable resources. Due to the resistance of lignin compounds to biological degradation and the import ...

Selective process modifications were considered among the possible process variations for carbon dioxide separation in natural gas fired combined gas and steam turbine power plants that differ greatly among themselves in terms of additional expense (effici ...

A process optimization method has been developed for the design of reverse osmosis (RO) processes. RO process configurations are systematically generated using a flexible superstructure and evaluated by economical (investment and operating costs), technica ...

The internal combustion engines are the most applied energy converters in the passenger cars. In order to increase their efficiency, energy integration techniques are used to recover the waste heat. An adapted methodology is required to design the Organic ...

In this paper the first results of a new method for the configuration of district energy systems are presented. District energy systems are believed to help decreasing the CO2-emissions due to energy services (heating, cooling, electricity and hot water), ...

Rankine cycles for low to medium power and low temperature heat using water as working fluid, were almost written off. The main arguments speaking against them are reviewed in this paper and the conceptual design of the equipment entirely revisited. An adv ...

Given the solution-phase processability and low energy intensity of several techniques, many techniques have been explored to manufacture these cells and modules. Among them, inkjet printing has shown potential for fabricating all the active layers while a ...

Fuel cell systems integrate the fuel cell technology with fuel processing and post processing. A thermo-economic optimization method has been developed to systematically generate the most attractive configurations of the integrated system. In the developed ...
