Key performance indicators in engineering problems include but are not limited to financial, operational, management and environmental factors, which are significantly affected by aspects such as seasonality, fouling, economic climate, production rates, su ...

This paper aims at giving a definition for waste heat in analogy to the definitions of natural resources and reserves. It aims also at presenting a method for identifying, characterizing and quantifying the available waste heat of an industrial system that ...

Industrial process integration based on mixed integer linear programming has been used for decades to design and improve industrial processes. The technique has later been extended to solve multi-period and multi-scale problems for the design of urban ener ...

A successful decarbonisation of the European Union, coupled with a high integration of renewable energy and ambitious targets for energy efficiency, can only be reached with a significant contribution from the transporta- tion sector. It currently represen ...

Failure in appropriately managing complex municipal solid waste systems in general and waste plastics in particular negatively affects public health and environment. A decision-making tool incorporating concepts of logistics and supply chain, considering d ...

Process integration methods allow one optimizing industrial processes. The main goals are decreasing energy demand and operating costs as well as reducing pollutants emissions. High fuel costs promote installations of heat pumps. In a heat pump, process wa ...

The combined sugar and ethanol production process from sugar cane is a paradigmatic application for energy integration strategies because of the high number of hot and cold streams involved, the external hot utility requirement at two temperature levels fo ...

This paper presents the development of a platform for studying, designing and optimizing complex integrated energy systems. Technology models representing the physical behavior are separated from thermo-economic analysis and multi-objective optimization in ...

Drastic variations of energy costs are witnessed in past decades, especially for low-carbon technologies, where decreasing and increasing trends co-existed. Estimating the cost evolution in the future is hence essential in long-term energy planning. Despit ...

This paper discusses strategies for the environomic optimization of renewable energy conversion technologies that are at the conceptual process design stage and produce multiple energy services, using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). It is illustrated by an ap ...

The NEST building laboratory of Empa and Eawag is a modular research and innovation demonstrator where new technologies, materials and systems are tested, researched, honed and validated in realistic conditions. In the NEST concept, only the supporting str ...

The Paris Agreement is the first-ever universally accepted and legally binding agreement on global climate change. It is a bridge between today's and climate-neutrality policies and strategies before the end of the century. Critical to this endeavor is ene ...

Long-term planning for energy systems is often based on deterministic economic optimization and forecasts of fuel prices. When fuel price evolution is underestimated, the consequence is a low penetration of renewables and more efficient technologies in fav ...

Cities can play a key role in mitigating climate change impacts, as they represent two thirds of the world’s energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This paper presents a model-based approach to support cities in the challenge of including energy ...

The current work addresses the design and assessment of different biomass conversion pathways based on anaerobic digestion for the efficient transformation of the raw materials to a variety of products, including bio-SNG, heat and power. Using a generic su ...

Due to the requirements of lower capital investment, higher operational flexibility, and the pressures from environmental legislations on local pollutants and global greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions, power generation market is in favour of natural gas bas ...

Due to its high photosynthesis conversion efficiency, microalgae are currently considered as a serious feedstock for next-generation biofuels production. One possible conversion process is the production of synthetic natural gas (SNG) through catalytic hyd ...

The main design criteria for the modern sustainable development of vehicle powertrains are the high energy efficiency of the conversion system, the competitive cost and the lowest possible environmental impacts. The need for efficiency improvement of the v ...

The expected increase of the penetration of distributed renewable energy technologies into the electricity grid is expected to lead to major challenges. As a main stakeholder, authorities often lack the appropriate tools to frame and encourage the transiti ...
