The integration of environmental impacts in the conceptual process design procedure can be achieved by combining Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tools with flowsheeting software and process integration techniques. However, current LCI databases assume a given ...

he aim of this paper is to discuss the integration of uncertainity analysis in an thermo-economic optimization method for process system design. Most of time energy systems are designed under constant parameters, whereas some of them are uncertain in real ...

Life cycle impact assessment indicators are integrated for studying the process integration of renewable resources and CO2 capture and storage (CCS) in power plants. Besides the expected reduction in global warming potential (GWP), CCS induces energy and c ...

Converting wood to grid quality methane allows to distribute a CO2 free, renewable enery resource in a conventional energy distribution system and use it in transportation applications. Using a previously developed thermo–economic process model for thermoc ...

The global demand for fossil fuels in the transportation sector is increasing rapidly due to the continuous growth of internal combustion engine vehicles. This leads to severe environmental problems, including greenhouse gas emissions and air-quality deter ...

Heat pumps will play an important role in improving the performance of the industrial processes aiming to decarbonize their heating requirements. Yet, defining the best operating conditions of those devices may be a challenging task, as they are embedded i ...

Process integration methods allow one optimizing industrial processes. The main goals are decreasing energy demand and operating costs as well as reduction of pollutants emissions. High fuel costs promote installation of heat pumps. In a heat pump process ...

Multi-objective optimisation methodology is ideally suited to incorporate environmental objectives in the optimal design of energy conversion systems. It is also desirable to optimise life-cycle emissions rather than local emissions only. However, using LC ...

The load tracking performance of combined cooling, heating, and power multi-energy system (CCHP-MES) greatly depends on the equipment capacity configuration. And the frequent fluctuations in the source-load uncertainty puts higher demands on the load track ...

Within the context of sustainable energy supply and CO2 emissions reduction a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) - Gas Turbine hybrid system, fuelled with gasified woody biomass for medium scale applications (8MWth,BM of dry biomass) is studied in detail. The sy ...

This paper addresses the problem of modeling and estimating the cost of the heat exchanger network (HEN) in multi-period operation using pinch technique concepts. The developed method improves the vertical heat exchanges technique originally proposed by Ah ...

Different technological alternatives for the thermochemical production of liquid fuels from lignocellulosic biomass are systematically analyzed and optimized based on thermo-environomic models. The competitiveness of the production of Fischer-Tropsch fuel ...

The dramatic evidence of climate change is making the transition to more renewable energy systems an urgent global priority. As energy planners normally look 20-50 years ahead, it is crucial to consider the key uncertainties stemming from inaccurate foreca ...

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is commonly acknowledged as a valuable technology for reducing industrial emissions. However, limited installation capacity raises questions about its ability to scale up effectively and promptly. This issue can, in part, b ...

This paper presents a methodology to integrate life cycle assessment (LCA)in thermo-economic models used for the optimal conceptual design of energy conversion systems. It is illustrated by an application to a thermo-economic model developed for the multi- ...

Using an exergy based indicator is highly desirable to compare future national energy strategies. A new web- based information platform called energyscope.ch, informing the general public on the Swiss energy transition was presented at ECOS2016. This paper ...

Optimization models for long-term energy planning often feature many uncertain inputs, which can be handled using robust optimization. However, uncertainty is seldom accounted for in the energy planning practice, and robust optimization applications in thi ...

In the past few years, waste management has received increasing attention not only from industry but also from academics. With an increase in plastic content, motivated by China’s ban on its import, waste composition is expected to change in the near futur ...

Aim of process integration methods is to increase the efficiency of industrial processes by using pinch analysis combined with process design methods. In this context, appropriate integrated utilities offer promising opportunities to reduce energy consumpt ...

The transition towards renewable energy is leading to an important strain on the energy grids. The question of designing and deploying renewable energy technologies in symbiosis with existing grids and infrastructure is arising. While current energy system ...
