This paper investigates the phenomenon of cover spalling in reinforced concrete induced by bond or by the action of an inner pressure. This research is based on an experimental programme comprising a series of bond tests and a series of tests with inner-pr ...

The material characterization of steel fibre-reinforced concrete (SFRC), which is required for its implementation in design codes, should be based on nominal properties that describe its postcracking strength in tension. In the case of brittle and quasi-br ...

This paper presents an investigation on the behaviour and strength of slab-column joints in multystorey buildings. Such joints may develop different potential failure modes such as crushing of the concrete of the slab (due to column loading), bending or pu ...

Ultra-high performance fiber reinforced concrete (UHPFC) is a new class of materials that combine a very strong and dense cementicious matrix with a high fiber content. UHPFC has a very high compressive strength (in the order of 200 MPa) and a relatively l ...

Concrete shells have been widely used in the past as economical and suitable solutions for a number of structures such as roofs, silos, cooling towers or offshore platforms. Taking advantage of their single or double curvature, bending moments and shear fo ...

As acknowledged explicitly or implicitly in most of current design codes, a high level of sustained loading has a detrimental effect on the concrete compressive strength. However, its beneficial effect in terms of deformation capacity is neglected in most ...

This paper investigates the structural behaviour of RC flat slabs supported on rectangular interior columns and the influence of the loading conditions (one or two-way bending) on their punching shear strength. The punching shear strength of slabs at recta ...

One possibility for strengthening existing flat slabs consists on gluing fibre reinforced polymers (FRPs) at the concrete surface. When applied on top of slab–column connections, this technique allows increasing the flexural stiffness and strength of the s ...

This paper presents the results of a systematic experimental campaign consisting of 13 symmetric punching tests on interior slab-column connections. The study focuses on the influence of varying the size of the supported area and the slenderness of the sla ...

The Elastic Plastic Stress Field method (EPSF) is a widely used tool for design and verification of structural concrete works. EPSF uses the elastic-plastic material behavior, which allows accounting for compatibility conditions and thus provides exact sol ...

Estimating the stress of reinforcing bars and its variations in service conditions can be useful to determine the reserve capacity of structures or to assess the risk of fatigue in the reinforcement. This paper investigates the use crack width measurements ...

In many countries reinforced concrete (RC) flat slabs supported on columns is one of the most commonly used structural systems for office and industrial buildings. To increase the lateral stiffness and strength of the structure, RC walls are typically added and carry the largest portion of the horizontal loads generated during earthquakes. While the slab-column system is typically not relevant with regard to the lateral stiffness and strength of the structure, each slab-column connection has to have the cap

The increasing usage of nonlinear analyses for the design of reinforced concrete structures and the necessity of codes of practice to provide a consistent safety format for them is one of the challenges that new generations of codes of practice are facing. ...

Punching shear is usually the governing failure criterion for the select ion of the depth of reinforced concrete footings. Despite the fact that large experimental programmes have been performed in the past aimed at the punching strength of slender flat sl ...

Large efforts have been devoted in the past to understanding size effect in shear failures of members without transverse reinforcement. Experimental works have demonstrated that increasing the size reduces the nominal shear strength provided that the failu ...

The automatic generation of elastic-plastic stress fields (EPSF) for structural concrete members by means of the finite element method has been demonstrated as a suitable approach for the design and assessment of D regions. This methodology allows accounti ...

To improve the reduced available experimental data on the load capacity of full scale bridge deck slabs, 3 tests on a large scale bridge cantilever (10 x 4.2 m) were done. The cantilevers were tested under 4, 2 and 1 concentrated loads simulating traffic w ...

Full-scale testing of a two-storey flat slab structure is reported, undertaken in the SlabSTRESS research project; the construction and testing were planned and carried out at the ELSA laboratory of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre. The dime ...

Strengthening of flat slab-column connections to resist imposed lateral drifts is often required for older reinforced concrete structures in which the flat slabs were typically designed to resist gravity load only or have been designed for less stringent r ...

Anchorage of shear reinforcement, such as links or stirrups, can be performed by providing hooks, bends or heads at their ends, by welding transverse reinforcement or by closing open stirrups with pins. Hooks and bends, also used to enhance the anchorage o ...
