Aggregate interlocking allows transferring shear and normal stresses through open cracks, and is considered to significantly contribute to the force transfer in cracked concrete. The complex phenomenon depends on the roughness of cracked surfaces, where ma ...

For the conception of cut-and-cover tunnel, two solutions are usually considered to define the cross-section : an arch/vault or a frame. The vault enables an optimal static behavior in case of a large soil cover and symmetric loads. However, this solution ...

This paper investigates the structural behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) arch-shaped members without transverse reinforcement subjected to bending. Such members have typical applications in tunnels, cut-and-cover structures, shells, vaults, ducts, silos ...

It is well known that control specimens used to assess the concrete strength of new structures have different casting and curing conditions than those of actual structures. Notably, after pouring of the concrete and before its hardening, a number of phenom ...

The strength and deformation capacity of concrete frames is typically governed by their nodal regions behaviour. This is particularly relevant for frame corners subjected to opening bending moments, where premature brittle failures may develop depending on ...

Civil engineering projects typically involve a number of design phases, such as preliminary design, tender design and executive design. The required degree of accuracy for the analysis of the behaviour and strength of the structural members increases as a ...

Shear fatigue of reinforced concrete members without transverse reinforcement has been observed to be potentially governing for the strength of some structural members subjected to large live loads of repetitive nature (as traffic, wind or wave actions). A ...

concrete footings with and without transverse reinforcement. Even though that punching shear failures have already been deeply investigated, there is still scanty experimental information on full-scale reinforced concrete footings failing in punching shear ...

Assessing the strength of existing structures has become a major issue for structural engineers. Such analyses are often performed after changes of use of the structure or due to new design codes requirements. This is particularly relevant with respect to ...

The Critical Shear Crack Theory (CSCT) is a consistent approach used for shear design of one- and two-way slabs failing in shear and punching shear respectively. The theory is based on a mechanical model allowing to determine the amount of shear force that ...

Reinforced concrete flat slabs supported by slender columns are often used as gravity load resisting system for buildings in regions of moderate seismicity. Current codes of practice determine the displacement capacity of slab-column connections using empi ...

Design of concrete girder bridges has significantly evolved during the last decades. This has been particularly relevant with respect to shear design, motivated by changes in actions and design models. As a consequence, assessing the shear strength of exis ...

RC slabs without shear reinforcement subjected to c oncentrated loads near lin ear supports are typical cases of deck slabs of bridges, transfer slabs or pile caps. Such elements are often designed or as sessed in shear with code provisions calibrated on ...

In this paper, the kinematical theorem of limit analysis is used to obtain the governing failure mechanisms and the corresponding failure load of reinforced concrete footings without transverse reinforcement. To that purpose, a Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion ...

This paper presents a critical review of the state of the art of experimental research concerning the seismic response of reinforced concrete flat slab frames. After a summary of tests on connections, the paper examines tests carried out on frames with gra ...

The phenomena associated with the consolidation of fresh concrete (bleeding and plastic settlement) are commonly considered significant for the bond performance of reinforcement. However, rules to take care of such influence for design are not consistent a ...

The anchorage of reinforcement in concrete is a complex phenomenon typically governed by several failure modes, including: pull-out failure, splitting, side spalling, edge wedge spalling, and corner spalling, depending on multiple factors. Extensive resear ...

Shear in one-way reinforced concrete (RC) members is transferred in cracked concrete members by a number of actions such as aggregate interlock, residual tensile stresses, dowelling action, inclination of compression chord and transverse reinforcement (if ...

Design and verification of structures in modern codes of practice account for a safety format, ensuring that the probability of failure does not exceed a given threshold. Although specific safety formats are proposed in some cases for special types of stru ...

This paper investigates the uniaxial compression behaviour of concrete under different strain rates and its relation to sustained loading. The aim is to observe the strain rate effect on the pre- and post-peak behaviour of concrete. In particular, the deve ...
