Defects in solids are unavoidable and can create complex electronic states that can significantly influence the electrical and optical properties of semiconductors. With the rapid progress in the integration of 2D semiconductors in practical devices, it is ...

Central to the biological function of microtubules. is their ability to modify their length which occurs by addition and removal of subunits at the ends of the polymer, both in vivo and in vitro. This dynamic behavior is strongly influenced by temperature. ...

Emergent behaviour from electron-transport properties is routinely observed in systems with dimensions approaching the nanoscale(1). However, analogous mesoscopic behaviour resulting from ionic transport has so far not been observed, most probably because of bottlenecks in the controlled fabrication of subnanometre nanopores for use in nanofluidics. Here, we report measurements of ionic transport through a single subnanometre pore junction, and the observation of ionic Coulomb blockade: the ionic counterpar

The present invention relates to a method for straining a two-dimensional layer of solid material (5) in a nanoelectronic device. the method comprises the steps of providing a substrate; adding a thin film onto the substrate to be in direct contact with the substrate (4), or onto one of one or more first interlayers placed on the substrate (4) to be in indirect contact with the substrate (4); patterning the thin film; and adding, through a high-temperature process, a two-dimensional layer of solid material

Grayscale structured surfaces with nanometer-scale features are used in a growing number of applications in optics and fluidics. Thermal scanning probe lithography achieves a lateral resolution below 10 nm and a vertical resolution below 1 nm, but its maxi ...

Solid-state nanopores can act as single-molecule sensors and could potentially be used to rapidly sequence DNA molecules. However, nanopores are typically fabricated in insulating membranes that are as thick as 15 bases, which makes it difficult for the de ...

Making use of the osmotic pressure difference between fresh water and seawater is an attractive, renewable and clean way to generate power and is known as 'blue energy'(1-3). Another electrokinetic phenomenon, called the streaming potential, occurs when an ...

We present the science and technology roadmap for graphene, related two-dimensional crystals, and hybrid systems, targeting an evolution in technology, that might lead to impacts and benefits reaching into most areas of society. This roadmap was developed ...

We report on vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) excited photoluminescence (PL) spectra emitted from a chemical vapor deposited MoS2 few-layered film. The excitation spectrum was recorded by monitoring intensities of PL spectra at similar to 1.9 eV. A strong wide exc ...

The present disclosure concerns an excitonic device including at least one heterostructure comprising or consisting solely of a first two-dimensional material or layer and a second two-dimensional material or layer. The at least one heterostructure being c ...

The observation of micrometer size spin relaxation makes graphene a promising material for applications in spintronics requiring long-distance spin communication. However, spin dependent scatterings at the contact/graphene interfaces affect the spin inject ...

Metallic two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are attracting great attention because of their interesting low-temperature properties such as superconductivity, magnetism, and charge density waves (CDW). However, further studies and ...

We present a transient absorption setup combining broadband detection over the visible-UV range with high temporal resolution (similar to 20 fs) which is ideally suited to trigger and detect vibrational coherences in different classes of materials. We gene ...

Strong epidemiologic evidence suggests an association between Alzheimer disease (AD) and type 2 diabetes. To determine if amyloid beta (A

\beta

) and hyperphosphorylated tau occurs in type 2 diabetes, pancreas tissues from 21 autopsy cases (10 type 2 diabe ...

The performance of electronic and optoelectronic devices based on two-dimensional layered crystals, including graphene, semiconductors of the transition metal dichalcogenide family such as molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) and tungsten diselenide (WSe2), as wel ...

We report on the growth of molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) using H2S as a gas-phase sulfur precursor that allows controlling the domain growth direction of domains in both vertical (perpendicular to the substrate plane) and horizontal (within the substrate pl ...

Some of the most important potential applications of carbon nanotubes are related to their mechanical properties. Stiff sp(2) bonds result in a Young's modulus close to that of diamond, while the relatively weak van der Waals interaction between the graphi ...

Since the discovery of graphene in 2004, there has been rapid progress in research on two-dimensional (2D) material’s potential applications with significant impact. Efforts to bring 2D materials closer to industrial production, quality assessment, and sta ...

In this letter we demonstrate the operation of an analog small-signal amplifier based on single-layer MoS2, a semiconducting analogue of graphene. Our device consists of two transistors integrated on the same piece of single-layer MoS2. The high intrinsic ...
