The isolation and characterization of Ln(NO3)3 complexes (Ln=La, Pr, Nd, Eu, Tb, Lu) with 2,3-benzo-1,4,7,13-tetraoxa-10-azacyclo-penta-decane (L1) and two of its N-substituted derivatives (L2, L3) are reported. Structural information in the solid state is derived from spectroscopic data (vibrational, absorption, reflectance and luminescence spectra). Both ligand- and metal-centered luminescence of solutions of the complexes in oxygen-free and anhydrous acetonitrile are investigated. Substitution of the N–p

New heterobinuclear lanthanide complexes with benzoxazole-substituted 8-hydroxyquinolines, [Ln(ligand)2(μ-ligand)2Na] (Ln: Yb, Lu), have been prepared and their structure established by X-ray crystallography, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and photophysical studies. ...

A lanthanide-based peptide-directed bioprobe LnP19 (Ln = Eu or Yb) is designed as an impressive example of a small molecule-based dual-functional probe for the EBV oncoprotein LMP1. The peptide P19 (Pra-KAhx-K-LDLALK-FWLY-K-IVMSDKW-K-RrRK) is designed to s ...

A series of six tetradentate polypyridine-type ligands (L) have been used to prepare the corresponding Eu(III) complexes [Eu(L)2(S)]nþ (n = 2, 3) where S = H2O or CF3SO3 -. Two of the ligands, 2,9-di(pyrid-20-yl)-1,10- phenanthroline (4) and its dipyridophenazine analogue (6) are symmetrical around a central phenanthroline ring. The other four ligands are 2,20-bi-1,10-phenanthroline and its 3,30-di-, tri-, and tetramethylene-bridged analogues (5a-d) whose conformations are governed by the length of the poly

The near-IR luminescence properties of two ErIII-containing coordination polymers, namely, [Er(btc)(H2O)5·3.5H2O] [(btc)3– = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate] and [Er2(bdc)3- (H2O)4] [(bdc)2– = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate] were investigated with the aim of testing ...

The luminescence of lanthanide (Ln) ions underpins numerous domestic applications. However, its intriguing nature makes the design of Ln chromophores with tailored optical properties quite challenging. A key issue is the weak absorptivity of intraconfigurational f-f transitions which necessitates using the ion's surroundings for light harvesting and subsequent energy transfer on Ln excited states, a process termed antenna effect. Since its discovery in 1942, this concept has been extensively studied. Early

We report the first p-type polymer-based multicomponent exciplex system exhibiting persistent luminescence (PersL). Using poly(N-vinylcarbazole) as the polymer donor host, with 2,4,6-tris(4-methoxyphenyl)pyrylium tetrafluoroborate and N,N′-Bis(1-naphthalenyl)-N,N′-bis-phenyl-(1,1′-biphenyl)-4,4′-diamine as the acceptor and trap material, respectively, this system achieves an afterglow lasting over 3 h. It directly addresses the critical drawbacks of existing n-type or small-molecule exciplex systems, namely

Acting as an extracellular matrix protein receptor, alpha(v)beta(3) integrin becomes an appealing target for photodynamic therapy of bladder cancer. Here, specific alpha(v)beta(3)-integrin-targeting porphyrinato-gadolinium complexes (Gd-PEG-R-n) are demons ...

Two europium complexes with bis(bipyridine) azamacrocyclic ligands featuring pendant arms with or without pi-conjugated donor groups are synthesized and fully characterized by theoretical calculations and NMR spectroscopy. Their photophysical properties, including two-photon absorption, are investigated in water and in various organic solvents. The nonfunctionalized ligand gives highly water-stable europium complexes featuring bright luminescence properties but poor two-photon absorption cross sections. On

X-ray-induced photochromism (X-PC) represents an emerging paradigm in radiation-responsive photonics, enabling deep-penetrating and reversible optical modulation far beyond the limitations of conventional light-driven photochromism. This review highlights the coupling between X-PC and luminescence modulation in inorganic systems as a transformative strategy within the framework of coordination nanoarchitectonics, enabling the rational design of intelligent, multi-signal X-ray photonic systems. We first eluc

The enthralling properties of lanthanide luminescence have propelled luminescent probes, tags and materials based on these elements to the forefront of science and technology. In this minireview, attention is focused on the latest innovations and on less-known aspects of this field. Exciting new developments in bioimaging, therapy, drug delivery, security tags, luminescent sensors, and solar energy conversion are highlighted.

Among the 14 lanthanide elements (Ce-Lu), until recently, the tetravalent oxidation state was readily accessible in solution only for cerium while Pr(iv), Nd(iv), Dy(iv) and Tb(iv) had only been detected in the solid state. The triphenylsiloxide ligand rec ...

Recent startling interest for lanthanide luminescence is stimulated by the continuously expanding need for luminescent materials meeting the stringent requirements of telecommunication, lighting, electroluminescent devices, (bio-)analytical sensors and bio ...

Two monotopic tridentate ligands, namely HLAB1 and HLAB2 have been synthesized which feature an acridone chromophore fused on a benzimidazolepyridine framework. They differ from each other by their connection points between a N-methylacridone and a N-methylbenzimidazole chromophoric moieties. Both ligands self-assemble with Ln(III) ions in neat acetonitrile to form thermodynamically stable neutral complexes of general formula [Ln(L-ABX)(3)] (log beta(13) in the range 22-25). Subsequent photophysical investi

Three new lanthanide heterocyclic beta-diketonate complexes [Dy(PPI)(3)(EtOH)(2)] (1), [Dy(PPI)(3)(DPEPO)] (2), and [Tb(PPI)(3)(DPEPO)] (3) [where HPPI = 3-pheny1-4-propanoyl-5-isoxazolone and DPEPO = bis(2(diphenylphosphino)phenyl)ether oxide] have been s ...

Due to their high and variable coordination numbers leading to poorly predictable threedimensional coordination spheres, the trivalent lanthanide metal ions are challenging molecular objects for introduction into thermotropic liquid crystals. Conversely, t ...

Multiphoton excited luminescent properties of water-soluble EuIII and TbIII complexes with derivatives of dipicolinic acid functionalized with a polyoxyethylene pendant arm and terminal groups, [Eu(LOMe)3]3-, [Eu(LNH2)3]3-, and [Tb(LOH)3]3-, as well as of ...

Optical imaging emerges as a vital component of the various techniques needed to meet the stringent requirements of modern bioanalysis and bioimaging. Lanthanide luminescent bioprobes (LLBs) have greatly contributed to this field during the past 35 years b ...

The ionic liquid crystal [C12-mim]Cl has been doped with 5 mol% europium nitrate and the photophysical properties of both the ionic liquid and the trivalent europium ion have been monitored with respect to temperature in the range of 248 to +120 uC. The re ...
