Lanthanide complexes with two push-pull diketone derivatives as sensitizers have been developed as synthons for near-infrared emitting materials. The ligand substituents consist of a carbazole moiety with hole-transport properties and an aromatic or hetero ...

As the need for targeting luminescent biolabels increases, for mapping selected analytes, imaging of cells and organs, and tracking in cellulo processes, lanthanide bimetallic helicates are emerging as versatile bioprobes. The wrapping of three ligand stra ...

The demand for near-infrared (700–1,700 nm) materials in optical communications, laser sources and biological imaging applications has led to extensive research on lanthanide-doped nanoparticles, owing to their nanostructure modulation and interface proper ...

Bioorthogonal chemistry is a rising field investigating chemical reactions in physiological environments with high specificity. However, only very few examples concern the real-time monitoring of bioorthogonal reactions by luminescence or magnetic relaxivi ...

The photophysical parameters for the sensitization of metal-centred luminescence are analyzed in two series of complexes with tridentate and hexadentate ligands having NxOy chelating units. In particular, the radiative lifetime tau(rad) is experimentally estimated for 29 nine-coordinate Eu-III complexes and 10 eight- and nine-coordinate Yb-III complexes. The known dependence of tau(rad) on refractive index is sub-stantiated by comparing data for solid-state samples and solutions. Moreover, a clear dependenc

The lanthanide binuclear helicate [Ln(2)(L-C2)(3)] has been embedded into bare and NH2-functionalized silica nanoparticles (NPs) using water-in-oil microemulsion technique. TEM analysis reveals both [Ln(2)(L-C2)(3)]@SiO2 and [Ln(2)(L-C2)(3)]@SiO2/NH2 nanoparticles having a spherical morphology and being monodispersed with an average size of 55 +/- 5 and 90 +/- 10 nm, respectively. The energy of the ligand triplet state, similar to 21 800 cm(-1) ([Gd-2(L-C2)(3)]@NP), does not change upon incorporation into s

The efficiency with which the surroundings of trivalent lanthanide ions sensitize their luminescence (Zsens) is a key parameter in the design of highly emitting molecular edifices and materials. Evaluation of Zsens requires the measurement of the overall a ...

Full-visible-spectrum emission phosphors are promising candidates for next-generation white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs), overcoming the complex and high costs of traditional mixed phosphors. However, their practical application is hindered by low lumines ...

Present-day advanced technologies heavily rely on the exciting magnetic and spectroscopic properties of lanthanide ions. In particular, their ability to generate well-characterized and intense near-infrared (NIR) luminescence is exploited in any modern fiber-optic telecommunication network. In this feature article, we first summarize the whereabouts underlying the design of highly luminescent NIR molecular edifices and materials. We then focus on describing the main trends in three applications related to t

Sterically hindered N-aryl-benzimidazole pyridine-2-carboxylic acids (aryl = phenyl, 4-biphenyl, 2-naphthyl) readily form homoleptic, neutral, nine-coordinate europium complexes which display efficient sensitized luminescence in solid state and in dichloro ...

The homoditopic ligand 6,6’- [methylenebis(1-methyl-1H-benzimid- azole-5,2-diyl)]bis(4-{2-[2-(2-methoxy- ethoxy)ethoxy]ethoxy}pyridine-2-carboxylic acid) (H2LC2) has been tailored to self-assemble with lanthanide ions (LnIII), which results in the formatio ...

The synthesis and the systematic and comparative photo-physical study of a series of visible (Eu-III, Tb-III) and NIR-emitting (Nd-III, Yb-III) lanthanide complexes (Ln(2)L) and ruthenium lanthanide coordination conjugates (Ln(2)LRu) are reported. The Gd-I ...

A new polydentate tripodal ligand T2soxMe was synthesized to take advantage of the chelating effect of tridentate 8- hydroxyquinolinate subunits. Potentiometric and spectrophotometric titrations reveal seven pKa values of between 3.7 and 10.2. In water, th ...

A series of lanthanide adducts with different amounts of 1,10-phenanthroline, chloride ions, and water molecules in the inner and outer coordination spheres are investigated with the aim of relating the chemical bonding pattern in the crystals to the lumin ...

The exploitation and utilization of resources in marine environments have ignited a demand for advanced illumination and optical communication technologies. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs), heralded as "green lighting sources", offer a compelling solution to ...

The heterobitopic ligands LABX (X=1,2, 3,4 or 5),diff ering only by a Cl or NEt2 substituent, have been designed to complex with a pair of lanthanide ions to form triple-stranded bimetallic helicates of overall composition [Ln2ACHTUNGTRENUNG(LABX)3]6+. The ...

Clinical applications ranging from magnetic resonance imaging to cancer therapy are more relying on the use of lanthanide coordination compounds. However, the coordination properties based on the electronic configuration of lanthanide ions can be easily sequestered by serum proteins and consequently induce unwanted side effects and/or toxicity if leaked from the bioprobe/prodrug. The knowledge of the thermodynamic and kinetic stability of the complexes used in these applications is therefore essential. To c

The quest for artificial light sources mimicking sunlight has been a long-standing endeavor, particularly for applications in anticounterfeiting, agriculture, and color hue detection. Conventional sunlight simulators are often cost-prohibitive and bulky. T ...

Treatment of Ln(NO3)3.nH2O with 1 or 2 equiv 2,2-bipyrimidine (BPM) in dry THF readily afforded the monometallic complexes [Ln(NO3)3(bpm)2] (Ln=Eu, Gd, Dy, Tm) or [Ln(NO3)3(bpm)2]THF (Ln=Eu, Tb, Er, Yb) after recrystallization from MeOH or THF, respectivel ...
