This article summarizes recent technological improvements of focused ion beam tomography. New in-lens (in-column) detectors have a higher sensitivity for low energy electrons. In combination with energy filtering, this leads to better results for phase seg ...

Magnetic skyrmions are promising candidates as information carriers in logic or storage devices thanks to their robustness, guaranteed by the topological protection, and their nanometric size. Currently, little is known about the influence of parameters su ...

Both seismic observations of dense low shear velocity regions and models of magma ocean crystallization and mantle dynamics support enrichment of iron in Earth’s lowermost mantle. Physical properties of iron-rich lower mantle heterogeneities in the modern ...

We performed laser-heated diamond anvil cell experiments combined with state-of-the-art electron microanalysis (focused ion beam and aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy) to study the distribution and valence of iron in Earth's lower mantl ...

While in 3D materials melting is a single, first-order phase transition, in 2D systems, it can also proceed via an intermediate phase. For a skyrmion lattice in Cu2OSeO3, magnetic field variations can tune this quasiparticle 2D solid into a skyrmion liquid ...

Planetary formation models show that terrestrial planets are formed by the accretion of tens of Moon-to Mars-sized planetary embryos through energetic giant impacts. However, relics of these large proto-planets are yet to be found. Ureilites are one of the ...

The effects of 107 MeV Kr-84(17+) ion irradiation on YBa2Cu3O7-x-based second-generation coated conductors were investigated using a combination of transmission electron microscopy, diffraction and X-ray energy dispersive spectrometry. Defects 3-5 nm in di ...

We report specific-heat measurements at magnetic fields up to 20 T on the recently discovered superconductor SmFeAsO0.85F0.15. The B-T diagram of a polycrystalline SmFeAsO0.85F0.15 sample with T-c=46 K was investigated. The temperature dependence of B-c2 w ...

Correlating in vivo imaging of neurons and their synaptic connections with electron microscopy combines dynamic and ultrastructural information. Here we describe a semi-automated technique whereby volumes of brain tissue containing axons and dendrites, pre ...

The tribocorrosion behaviour of a 304L stainless steel/alumina contact was investigated in sulphuric acid at two imposed potentials (cathodic and passive) The metal deformation below the surface was investigated by analyzing cross sections using secondary ...

The aim of the work was to produce laminated structures consisting of Ti-6Al-4V alloy and AA2519 plates and to investigate their microstructure and mechanical properties with anemphasis on the role of an additional AA1050 interlayer. Explosive welding was ...

In this work we develop a methodology to probe the strength and toughness of microscopic brittle phases by combining focused ion beam (FIB) milling methods with microtesting techniques and finite element simulation. We present results from tests conducted on alumina fibres and compare data thus obtained with known macroscopic fibre properties derived from tensile tests conducted on long sections of the fibres. The developed methodology is to be transposed towards the microscopic mechanical testing of irregu

Microstructural changes in Ni–yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) near the YSZ electrolyte were examined by three-dimensional (3D) electron microscopy after electrolysis and fuel cell operation up to 10,700 h and 15,000 h, respectively. The depletion of Ni an ...

Ferroelectrics are widespread in technology(1), being used in electronics and communications(2), medical diagnostics and industrial automation. However, extension of their operational temperature range and useful properties is desired(3-5). Recent developm ...

The spatial evolution of compositions and sub-structures inside focused-electron-beam-deposited tips from dicobalt-octacarbonyl Co2(CO)8 precursor at 25 keV and varying beam current (20 pA - 3 A) is extensively studied for the first time by means of energy ...

The structure of Al, Ge, Mo-doped Higher Manganese Silicide (HMS) crystals with the general formulas Mn(Si0.99Ge0.01)(1.75), Mn(Si0.995Ge0.005)(1.75) and (Mn0.98Mo0.02)(Si0.98Ge0.02)(1.75)Al-0.01 was investigated by scanning and transmission electr ...

Pb(Zr-x, Ti1-x)O-3 (PZT) piezoelectric thin films are of major interest in MEMS technology for their ability to provide electro-mechanical coupling. In this work, the effective transverse piezoelectric coefficient e(31,f) of sol-gel processed films was investigated as a function of composition, film texture and film thickness. Dense, textured and crack-free PZT films have been obtained on silicon substrates up to a thickness of 4 mum. Crystallization anneals have been performed for every 0.25 mum. Nucleatio

Thin films of neodymium-modified bismuth titanate Bi3.44Nd0.56Ti3O12 (BNT) were grown on Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates using chemical solution deposition method. The capacitors made by applying top Au electrodes on BNT films showed significantly improved values of the remanent polarization as compared to that using bismuth titanate Bi4Ti3O12 (BT) films. The 2P(r) value for the BNT capacitors was determined to be equal to 38 muC/cm(2) at an applied voltage of 24 V, whereas, for Bi4Ti3O12 ( BT) capacitors a valu

Deriving accurate three-dimensional (3-D) structural information of materials at the nanometre level is often crucial for understanding their properties. Tomography in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is a powerful technique that provides such inform ...

The biomedical industry has an increasing demand for processes to join dissimilar metals, such as laser welding of NiTi and stainless steel wires. A region of the weld close to the NiTi interface, which previously was shown to be prone to cracking, was fur ...
