This letter addresses the synthesis of reflective cells approaching a given desired Floquet's scattering matrix. This work is motivated by the need to obtain much finer control of reflective metasurfaces by controlling not only their copolarized reflection, but also their cross-coupling behavior. The demonstrated capability will enable more powerful design approaches-involving all field components in phase and magnitude-and consequently better performance in applications involving reflective metasurfaces. W

We present an integrated composite right/left handed transmission line (CRLH-TL) phase shifter analogically controlled by means of a MEMS series capacitor. The device is based on coplanar waveguide (CPW) technology and operates at a central frequency of 18 ...

We report a non-direct method to determine the minimum conductivity (sigma(min)) of graphene. The proposed technique is based on the prior characterization of graphene sheet impedance at microwave frequencies using waveguides, and on the subsequent extraction of sigma(min) from the measured scattering rate. This approach presents some advantages as compared with standard DC characterization methods, as it is inherently contactless and does not require graphene patterning. Our experimental study estimates a

A partially reflective surface (PRS) antenna design enabling 1-bit dynamic beamwidth control is presented. The antenna operates at X-band and is based on microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology. The reconfigurable PRS unit cell monolithically inte ...

Faraday rotation is a fundamental magneto-optical phenomenon used in various optical control and magnetic field sensing techniques. Recently, it was shown that a giant Faraday rotation can be achieved in the low-THz regime by a single monoatomic graphene layer. Here, we demonstrate that this exceptional property can be manipulated through adequate nano-patterning, notably achieving giant rotation up to 6THz with features no smaller than 100 nm. The effect of the periodic patterning on the Faraday rotation i

A very low-loss tunable millimeter-wave phase shifter driven by dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) is presented. The device consists of a fixed coplanar waveguide (CPW) and two metallic loading strips suspended on an elastomer membrane. The horizontal o ...

This chapter discusses different key issues related to the actual design and implementation of parasitic antenna arrays for the novel beamspace-MIMO concept. The proposed design strategies are illustrated by a concrete operational prototype. The chapter also briefly discusses the possibility of considering realistic antenna elements for practical portable applications as well as the effects of the operating environment on the system performance.

Resonant graphene antennas used as true interfaces between terahertz (THz) space waves and a source/detector are presented. It is shown that in addition to the high miniaturization related to the plasmonic nature of the resonance, graphene-based THz antenna favorably compare with typical metal implementations in terms of return loss and radiation efficiency. Graphene antennas will contribute to the development of miniature, efficient, and potentially transparent all-graphene THz transceivers for emerging co

The concept and analysis of a THz frequency-reconfigurable antennas using graphene are presented. The antennas exploit dipole-like plasmonic resonances that can be frequency-tuned on large range via the electric field effect in a graphene stack. In additio ...

We present recent results related to the modelling, design, and application of graphene surfaces. Mono and multilayer graphene surfaces are patterned in a periodic or quasi-periodic manner to tailor their electromagnetic response in terms of magnitude, pha ...

Re-configurability is one of the key features in modern wireless communications. Indeed, the increase of services provided imply an optimized management of the electromagnetic spectrum, along with strong miniaturization in order to allow for the cohabitation of all these services on small handheld devices. Reconfigurable antennas are one possible answer to these challenges. In this paper, we will present designs of reconfigurable antennas and feeding networks using recent technologies, namely MEMS (Micro El

In this communication we propose the concept of a circularly polarized reflectarray (RA) antenna capable of independent beam-switching in both K and Ka bands. The RA unit cell comprises one microstrip ring per each operation frequency. Each ring is integra ...

A new, compact way to match slot antennas to a coplanar waveguide (CPW) feed is presented. In addition to its advantages of flexibility, reduced size, and increased bandwidth, a good analytical approximation of the matched antenna behavior is possible. An equivalent circuit and procedures for its design are presented. A set of T-matched antennas has been built and measured at the S-band.

We show that the public experiment held in Venice by Tamburini et al and reported in 2012 New J. Phys. 14 033001 can be regarded as a particular implementation of multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) communications and, therefore, has no advantages over e ...

We show that the reply by Tamburini et al (2012 New J. Phys. 14 118002) to our previous comment (2012 New J. Phys. 14 118001) on the experiment reported in Tamburini et al (2012 New J. Phys. 14 033001) does not actually invalidate any of the issues raised ...
