Beam-space multiplexing has been demonstrated as a promising approach for transmitting multiple signals while using a single RF chain. This paper presents a novel beam-space antenna design that is very compact and integrated into a hypothetical portable pl ...

A tunable graphene-based reflective cell operating at THz is proposed for use in reconfigurable-beam reflectarrays, or similarly to implement the so-called generalized law of reflection. The change in the complex conductivity of graphene when biased by an electric field allows controlling the phase of the reflected field at each element of the array. Additionally, the slow wave propagation supported by graphene drastically reduces the dimensions of the cell, which allows smaller inter-element spacing hence

In this opening presentation we will first recall the main characteristics of graphene conductivity and electromagnetic wave propagation on graphene-based structures. Based on these observations and different graphene antenna simulations from microwave to ...

Isolators, or optical diodes, are devices enabling unidirectional light propagation by using non-reciprocal optical materials, namely materials able to break Lorentz reciprocity. The realization of isolators at terahertz frequencies is a very important ope ...

The gate-controllable complex conductivity of graphene offers unprecedented opportunities for reconfigurable plasmonics at terahertz and mid-infrared frequencies. However, the requirement of a gating electrode close to graphene and the single 'control knob ...

This work addresses the task of integrating reflectarray antennas on thin-film solar cell panels, as a means to save real estate, weight or cost of platforms, such as satellites or transportable autonomous antenna systems. Reflectarray unit cell families, ...

An approach for transmitting multiple signals using a single switched parasitic antenna (SPA) has been recently reported. The idea there is to map the signals to be transmitted onto a set of basis functions that serve as “virtual antennas” in the beamspace ...

In this work we present a simple reconfigurable reflectarray (RRA) unit cell general topology and implementation, which allows the independent control of the phase and polarization of the reflected electromagnetic wave. The 1-bit phase control (with 180 de ...

Nonlocal electromagnetic effects of graphene arise from its naturally dispersive dielectric response. We present semianalytical solutions of nonlocal Maxwell's equations for graphene nanoribbon arrays with features around 100 nm, where we found prominent d ...

In this communication we present a concept of a partially reflective surface (PRS) antenna capable of independent beam-scanning and beamwidth dynamic control. The beamwidth is controlled by reconfiguring the PRS reflectivity via embedded varactor diodes, w ...

A practical approach for accurately modeling reconfigurable lumped components, such as semiconductor diodes or micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), in commercial full-wave solvers is presented. First, an equivalent-circuit model is extracted from a calibrated measurement of the isolated component. This model is then carefully corrected for its insertion into commercial software packages in order to achieve excellent agreement between simulated and measured results. Among other things, it is shown that fa

We propose to model periodic structures by equivalent multiconductor transmission lines (MTLs). The developed technique is based on a multimodal representation of the periodic structure unit cell, such as required for periodically loaded MTLs and periodica ...

Crucial developments to the recently introduced signal-space approach for multiplexing multiple data symbols using a single-radio switched antenna are presented. First, we introduce a general framework for expressing the spatial multiplexing relation of th ...

Advances in terahertz technology rely on the combination of novel materials and designs. As new devices are demonstrated to address the terahertz gap, the ability to perform high-efficiency beam control will be integral to making terahertz radiation a prac ...

The propagation of plasmons on magnetically biased graphene sheets is addressed. The analysis is based on the transverse resonance method extended to handle the graphene conductivity tensor and allows easily accounting for substrate effects. A transcendent ...

We present a transmission line model for TM plasmon propagation along a graphene strip, and derive closed-form expressions for the kinetic and Faraday inductance, resistance, and electrostatic capacitance of the equivalent circuit as a function of graphene ...

The concept and analysis of a terahertz (THz) frequency-reconfigurable antenna using graphene are presented. The antenna exploits dipole-like plasmonic resonances that can be frequency-tuned on large range via the electric field effect in a graphene stack. In addition to efficient dynamic control, the proposed approach allows high miniaturization and good direct matching with continuous wave THz sources. A qualitative model is used to explain the excellent impedance stability under reconfiguration. These in

A dual-polarized, broadband antenna made up of two single-polarized dipoles is presented. The antenna is mounted on a ground plane to produce a low-profile structure. Two fractal-like elements are used, but a very wide bandwidth is only achieved by making adjustments to the shape to reduce the coupling between the two polarizations. The resulting improved element exhibits an input return loss better than -10 dB over a 1:3.5 band. The isolation is better than about -30 dB, and the radiation characteristics a

A simple method to design optimally matched composite right-/left-handed transmission lines (CRLH-TLs), based on the computation of the Bloch wave equivalent impedance of the corresponding unit cell circuit is presented. Although the matching of CRLH-TLs t ...

Recently the orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing scheme has been proposed to increase supposedly without limit the channel capacity between a transmitter and a receiver nodes communicating in line of sight. A controversy arose about the far-field e ...
