PurposeIn this work we performed an imaged-based computational study of the systolic fluid dynamics in presence of mitral valve regurgitation (MVR). In particular, we compared healthy and different regurgitant scenarios with the aim of quantifying differen ...

A linear dynamical model for the development of the turbulent energy cascade was introduced in Apolina ' rio et al. (J. Stat. Phys., 186, 15 (2022)). This partial differential equation, randomly stirred by a forcing term which is smooth in space and delta- ...

This textbook is an introduction to Scientific Computing, in which several numerical methods for the computer solution of certain classes of mathematical problems are illustrated. The authors show how to compute the zeros or the integrals of continuous functions, solve linear systems, approximate functions by polynomials and construct accurate approximations for the solution of ordinary and partial differential equations. To make the presentation concrete and appealing, the programming environments Matlab a

In this work we present numerical simulations of continuous flow left ventricle assist device implantation with the aim of comparing the ascending and the descending aorta anastomosis of outflow cannula. Despite the fact that the second approach is less in ...

OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the progression of electrophysiotogicat phenomena in a cohort of patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) and persistent atrial fibrillation (PsAF). BACKGROUND Electrical remodeling has been conjectured to ...

The aim of this work is to present a reduced mathematical model for describing fluid flow in porous media featuring open channels or fractures. The Darcy's law is assumed in the porous domain while the Stokes-Brinkman equations are considered in the fractu ...

Several computational challenges arise when evaluating the failure probability of a given system in the context of risk prediction or reliability analysis. When the dimension of the uncertainties becomes high, well established direct numerical methods can ...

Modeling Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) in the vascular system is mandatory to reliably compute mechanical indicators in vessels undergoing large deformations. In order to cope with the computational complexity of the coupled 3D FSI problem after discretizations in space and time, a parallel solution is often mandatory. In this paper we propose a new block parallel preconditioner for the coupled linearized FSI system obtained after space and time discretization. We name it FaCSI to indicate that it explo

We consider Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) for the numerical solution of the electrophysiology of the atria, which in this work is modeled by means of the bidomain equations on thin surfaces. First, we consider the bidomain equations coupled with the Roger-Mc ...

The aim of this work is to solve parametrized partial differential equations in computational domains represented by networks of repetitive geometries by combining reduced basis and domain decomposition techniques. The main idea behind this approach is to compute once, locally and for few reference shapes, some representative finite element solutions for different values of the parameters and with a set of different suitable boundary conditions on the boundaries: these functions will represent the basis of

Multiphysics and multiscale mathematical models enable the non-invasive study of cardiac function. These models often rely on simplifying assumptions that neglect certain biophysical processes to balance fidelity and computational cost. In this work, we pr ...

This spreading of prion proteins is at the basis of brain neurodegeneration. This paper deals with the numerical modelling of the misfolding process of a-synuclein in Parkinson's disease. We introduce and analyse a discontinuous Galerkin method for the sem ...

In this paper, we simulate the earthquake that hit the city of L'Aquila on 2009 April 6 using SPEED (SPectral Elements in Elastodynamics with Discontinuous Galerkin), an open-source code able to simulate the propagation of seismic waves in complex 3-D doma ...

When modelling the cardiovascular system, the effect of the vessel wall on the blood flow has great relevance. Arterial vessels are complex living tissues and three-dimensional specific models have been proposed to represent their behaviour. The numerical ...

Pulmonary valve replacement (PVR) consists of substituting a patient's original valve with a prosthetic one, primarily addressing pulmonary valve insufficiency, which is crucially relevant in Tetralogy of Fallot repairment. While extensive clinical and com ...

In this work we develop an adaptive and reduced computational algorithm based on dimension-adaptive sparse grid approximation and reduced basis methods for solving highdimensional uncertainty quantification (UQ) problems. In order to tackle the computation ...

In the wide literature devoted to the cardiac structural mechanics, the strain energy proposed by Holzapfel and Ogden exhibits a number of interesting features: it has suitable mathematical properties and it is based on few material parameters that can, in ...

This review paper addresses the so called geometric multiscale approach for the numerical simulation of blood flow problems, from its origin (that we can collocate in the second half of '90s) to our days. By this approach the blood fluid-dynamics in the wh ...

Mathematical modelling of the human heart and its function can expand our understanding of various cardiac diseases, which remain the most common cause of death in the developed world. Like other physiological systems, the heart can be understood as a complex multiscale system involving interacting phenomena at the molecular, cellular, tissue, and organ levels. This article addresses the numerical modelling of many aspects of heart function, including the interaction of the cardiac electrophysiology system
