In water supply systems, the potential exists for micro-hydropower that uses the pressure excess in the networks to produce electricity. However, because urban drinking water networks are complex systems in which flows and pressure vary constantly, identif ...

Gravity currents are caused by density differences between two fluids which may be due to temperature, dissolved substances or the presence of particles in suspension. In this study saline currents, in which the higher density is produced by dissolved salt, are reproduced in laboratory with the aim to characterize the bed shear stress. Saline currents can in fact be responsible for high erosion rates and the bed shear stress is a quantification of this erosive capacity. The dynamics of buoyancy driven flows

Physical heterogeneity is a major topic in river sciences because it is known to be a key factor for ecological integrity. In this paper, we investigated the hydraulic enviroment in an alpine gravel-bed stream with an unaltered hydrological regime. The stu ...

This paper presents the mechanical and hydraulic behaviour of passively prestressed concrete-lined pressure tunnels embedded in elastic transversely isotropic rocks subjected to non-uniform in situ stresses. Two cases are distinguished based on whether the ...

Water temperature is one of the most important abiotic variables in streams and strongly influences the distribution and abundance of freshwater organisms. It might be assumed that in natural streams home to heterogenous habitats also a wide range of thermal habitats exist, whereas in altered and channelized streams variability in water temperatures will be less pronounced. In order to test this hypothesis a case study at river Sense in Switzerland was carried out. At five river reaches characterized by dif

Extreme floods are commonly estimated with the help of design storms and hydrological models. In this paper, we propose a new method to take into account the relationship between precipitation intensity (P) and air temperature (T) to account for potential ...

Gravity currents are geophysical flows responsible of the distal transport of high volumes of sediments. In particular, turbidity currents, a form of gravity currents where sediments in suspension confer the buoyancy that ignites the flow, are the main mec ...

Tsunamis, landslide-generated waves, and dam failures are rare, but highly destructive phenomena, associated with extreme loading on infrastructure. Recent events showed that specific measures must be taken to guarantee safety of both people and the built ...

Reservoir sedimentation is, at present, one of the main concerns in the operational management of dams. The resulting reduction of storage capacity has negative impacts on the hydropower production, flood protection, and availability of water for irrigatio ...

Two-phase flows occurring at flow constrictions such as bridges or open sediment check dams are complex, especially for steep rivers with bedload transport. Dangerous bedload deposition and backwater effects may occur in steep mountain rivers at bridges. I ...

Many Alpine rivers are affected by hydro-peaking, strong sub-daily fluctuations of discharge caused by intermittent power production from hydropower plants. Adding a retention volume at the outlet of a hydropower plant aims at attenuating hydro-peaking to a level where adverse effects on fish and invertebrates are minimal. The performance of such a retention volume needs to be assessed when extensions to the hydropower system are envisaged to improve operational flexibility. Using a set of scenarios for fut

Scour around bridge abutments frequently leads to the collapse of bridge superstructures. Consequently, scour countermeasures are usually designed and installed by river engineers, riprap matting being the most widespread solution. The associated design criteria must attend to two groups of failure mechanisms: i) those associated the abutment body stability, which include particle erosion, translational slide failure, modified slump and slump failure; ii) those associated with the riprap apron stability, in

Gravity currents impact significantly the environment and human's life. Understanding their internal structure and their dynamics is fundamental for modelling purposes. In this study we observe experimentally how bed porosity affects the dynamics of densit ...

Flow field in shallow waters, which is characterized by its complex mixing process and inherent dynamic nature, is interesting mainly due to its practical importance (e. g. in free flushing operation and sedimentation in large reservoirs). 3D numerical mod ...

Artificial water storage, originated by the construction of dams, is essential for the sustainable health and welfare of civilizations since it supplies water for human consumption, irrigation and energy production. Furthermore, dam reservoirs are used for ...

Only 42 % of the mean annual production of large hydropower plants in the Swiss Alps is stored in their reservoirs. Once the reservoirs are full at the end of the summer semester, plants are operated as run-on-the-river in order to avoid spilling. A signif ...

Reservoir sedimentation is an ongoing issue, which endangers the sustainability of reservoirs. As well as reducing the capacity of a reservoir, sedimentation causes damage to hydraulic structures such as turbine intakes and bottom outlets. In addition, downstream problems related to the river’s ecosystem are also observed. Venting turbidity currents is one method for managing sedimentation problems. This paper presents the main conditions for venting, as well as examining its application and efficiency in v

The simulation of run-off in an alpine catchment area equipped with complex hydropower schemes is presented by the help of an especially developed tool, called Routing System, which can combine hydrological modelling and operation of hydraulic elements. In the hydrological forecasting tool tridimensional rainfall, temperature and evapotranspiration distributions are taken into account for simulating the dominant hydrological processes, as glacier melt, snow pack constitution and melt, soil infiltration and

Scouring is an erosional process driven by the water motion over a sediment bed. Scour can lead to structural safety risks of built structures and to riverbanks’ instabilities and collapse. In particular, scouring in river bends is a known phenomenon caused by secondary flow currents. This scouring can result in negative impacts on the economic and social activities that occur on the riverbanks. On the other hand, the erosion and scouring processes of riverbeds are often addressed by means of heavy civil en

Driftwood is often transported by a river course during flood events and can be problematic where it accumulates at hydraulic structures. Near obstacles, driftwood can block and thus reduces the open flow area for water passage, resulting in a lowered disc ...
