River restoration works often include measures to promote morphological diversity and enhance habitat suitability. One of these measures is the creation of macro-roughness elements, such as lateral cavities and embayments, in the banks of channelized river ...

Reservoir sedimentation is considered as a sustainability problem. A concept getting down to the root of the cause was developed and tested in laboratory experiments. The idea is to maintain sediment in suspension, i.e., avoiding its settling near the dam ...

Open check dams are built to retain bed load in case of major floods and may have filtering, sieving as well as dosing effects on sediment transport. The combination of an upstream reservoir with an open check dam is designated as bed load trap. These stru ...

Chancy-Pougny is a run-of-river dam on the Swiss–French border constructed in the early 1920s. Since its commissioning, the operation of the four spillway gates has been responsible for a progressive erosion of the stilling basin. The future scour potentia ...

Floodplains downstream of a dam, where the natural flow regime is replaced by a constant residual flow discharge, often lack sediment supply and periodic inundation due to the absence of natural flood events. In this study, a flood with a one-year return p ...

The overall dam-break phenomenon is currently well understood for reservoirs filled with water. However, many dams face serious problems of reservoir sedimentation. Thus, regarding risk management, the influence of a large amount of sediment in the reservoir on dam-break wave propagation is of great importance. Experimental investigations were performed to investigate the influence of the silting degree of reservoirs and grain size distribution on wave heights and velocities. Dam-break waves in silted-up re

Polluted liquids leaking from their storages over the surrounding gravel beds or oil spilling into aquifers, are examples of gravity currents moving over a porous terrain. Density-driven flows provoked by saline or temperature differences or turbidity currents, travelling over fissured lakes and ocean beds, may disrupt deposits of gases and fluids which eventually may be released into the environment. To prevent and confine the environmental impact of such events, it is thus crucial to understand the mass e

Within the fluvial network, confluences are particular areas characterized by great ecological value where flow dynamics and bed morphology are much influenced by local patterns. The aim of this article is to describe the influence of the convergence angle ...

High-velocity plunging water jets, appearing at the downstream end of dam weirs and spillways, can create scour of the rock. The prediction of this scour is necessary to ensure the safety of the toe of the dam as well as the stability of its abutments. A physically based engineering model has been developed at the Laboratory of Hydraulic Constructions for evaluation of the ultimate scour depth. This model is based on experimental measurements of water pressures at plunge pool bottoms and inside underlying r

Velocity fields in rectangular shallow reservoirs with different length-to-width and expansion ratios were investigated in an experimental study, to evaluate the effect of geometry on the flow field. A wide range of combinations of these two non-dimensiona ...

The papers present three innovative solutions for fine sediment manage- ments in seasonal reservoirs, which are at different stages of maturity. Operational reservoir stirring using jet-like inflows may facilitate sediment routing, at no addi- tional cost ...

Large wood is often transported by rivers into reservoirs during heavy rainfall events. When a critical section like a spillway is blocked and discharge capacity reduced, an uncontrolled increase of the reservoir water level may occur. This study aims to s ...

Pressure tunnels are in operation subjected to internal water pressure. When the hoop tensile stress acting at the lining intrados exceeds the tensile strength of concrete, longitudinal cracks occur in the concrete lining. As a consequence of crack openings, the internal water pressure will act at the lining extrados and cause high local water losses. If left untreated, these losses will induce the washing out of joint fillings and increase the risk of hydro-jacking of the surrounding rock mass. When pressu

Due to the increasing production of volatile new renewable energies as solar and wind, storage hydropower plants have to operate under harsh operation conditions in order to stabilize the electricity grid. As a result, highly transient water pressures occu ...

A physically based engineering model has been developed at the Laboratory of Hydraulic Constructions for the evaluation of the ultimate scour depth of a jointed rock mass due to high-velocity jet impact. The model is based on experimental measurements and numerical simulations of water pressure fluctuations at plunge pool bottoms and inside underlying rock joints. The water pressures inside the joints revealed to be of highly transient nature, governed by a cyclic change between high peak pressures and low

Water retention in reservoirs and concentrated turbine operations allow electricity to be produced on demand. Sudden opening and closing of the turbines can produce highly unsteady flow conditions in the river downstream of the tailrace channel, the so-called hydropeaking. Mitigating its adverse impacts on the aquatic ecosystems has become a mandatory requirement in today’s water policies in many countries. Existing facilities are being ‘rehabilitated’ for habitat improvement or restoration, and new facilit

The physical modeling tests for the rehabilitation of St-Marc Dam with a PKW are presented. A particular focus is put on the energy dissipation downstream from the PKW. The adopted solution is a leaned “ski-jump gutter” placed at the contact line between the downstream face of the dam and the natural foundation rock. It consists of a cylindrical profile, developed around an inclined axis and closed by a horizontal reach at the end of the structure. The aim of this solution is to guide the flow issued from t

In the framework of a research project focusing on mitigation measures for hydropeaking, a lateral embayment in riverbank is studied as a fish shelter. With the goal to find attractive configurations of shelter, systematic experiments with wild juvenile brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) were carried out in a flume supplied with freshwater from a natural river. The experimental is equipped with a rectangular lateral embayment. In order to follow the fish trajectories, their movements were recorded continuousl

Hydropower is an important pillar of the electricity production in Switzerland and its extension is planned in the next decades. Therefore, a more sustainable management of hydropower plants is needed. Sediment replenishment combined with artificially-trig ...

In-stream open check dams are essential for flood protection at mountain rivers that are characterized by steep slopes (>1%) and sediment-laden flood discharges. These structures comprise an opening acting as a lateral or vertical flow contraction to force ...
