We investigate to what extent the initial conditions (in terms of buoyancy and geometry) of saline gravity currents flowing over a horizontal bottom influence their runout and entrainment capacity. In particular, to what extent the effect of the introducti ...

The bearing capacity of prestressed concrete-lined pressure tunnels is governed by the in situ stress of rock mass, which generally has different magnitudes in the vertical and horizontal direction. Two cases were distinguished, based on whether the vertic ...

Orifices have been largely studied either for flow metering or for producing head losses. An orifice which is used as a flow meter is well defined in ISO 5167. All the geometrical parameters are defined to obtain discharges as accurate as possible. However ...

The hydromorphological implications of the local widening of a tributary where it enters a confluence were investigated in a laboratory setting that is representative of the 20 major confluences on the channelized Upper Rhone River. Although local tributary widening reduces the confluence angle, it amplifies the hydromorphosedimentary processes in the confluence hydrodynamic zone (CHZ), because local widening reduces the effective flow area, causing increased tributary velocities and momentum flux. The redu

The dependence of curvature-induced secondary flow on the curvature ratio H/R (H is the average flow depth and R is the centreline radius of curvature), the Froude number Fr, and the dimensionless roughness coefficient Cf was systematically investigated in ...

A 2D numerical flow model, developed at the Research unit of Hydrology, Applied Hydrodynamics and Hydraulic Constructions at ULg, has been applied to flows in a macro-rough channel. The model solves the shallow water equations (SWE) with a two length scale ...

The ability of a bubble screen to redistribute the flow field and bed morphology in shallow rivers and open channels has been investigated in laboratory experiments. Rising air bubbles generated by a pressurized porous tube situated on the bed induced seco ...

To establish a compromise between ecological benefits and hydraulic flood risk, one needs a deep knowledge of fluid mechanics. In particular, and in what concerns energy loss, it is necessary to possess a good understanding of the processes that govern the rate of dissipation of TKE. This paper is aimed at quantifying this turbulent rate of dissipation in flows within arrays of emergent stems. To achieve that goal, experimental work was carried out featuring a periodic distribution of stem densities with mi

Water supply systems (WWSs) are one of the main manmade water infrastructures presenting potential for micro-hydropower. Within urban networks, local decentralized micro-hydropower plants (MHPs) may be inserted in the regional electricity grid or used for self-consumption at the local grid level. Nevertheless, such networks are complex and the quantification of the potential for micro-hydropower other than that achieved by replacing pressure reducing valves (PRVs) is difficult. In this work, a methodology t

Previous studies and field surveys showed that specific structural designs can decrease the load on free-standing buildings along the coast, providing safer vertical shelters. This experimental study investigated the effect of openings in buildings (window ...

Hydromorphological conditions are a key factor for the habitat diversity in riverine ecosystems. The Hydromorphological Index of Diversity (HMID) is a tool to quantify the habitat diversity in a river reach based on local flow depths and flow velocities. T ...

Sudden starting and stopping of turbines and pumps lead to highly unsteady flow in tailrace channels of hydropower plants (HPP). Submergence of Pelton turbines and air entrainment in pumps due to surge waves must be avoided by technical measures. The exist ...

Gravity currents are geophysical flows having large impact on human life and on the environment. The need to prevent and mitigate their negative consequences justifies the multitude of studies carried out to understand their physics. However little has bee ...

Turbidity currents are the main source of suspended sediment transport in reservoirs and thus one of the main causes of sedimentation. One of the techniques used to avoid reservoir sedimentation is through venting of turbidity currents. In the framework of ...

Due to a complex three-dimensional flow pattern, the outer banks of river bends are predisposed to erosion. When endangering civil structures, preventing measures to mitigate this erosion are thus required. Vertical ribs at protection walls for scour reduc ...

With increasing of hydrological data records and the development of technologies for flood discharge estimation, as well as higher requirements on dam safety issues, a large number of existing dams require spillway rehabilitation to improve their hydraulic capacity. For such projects, the Piano Key Weir (PKW) is an efficient alternative. When compared to standard labyrinth weirs, this structure provides a longer effective crest length for a given spillway width, with the advantage that a PKW can be mounted

Depositional and flow patterns are first described to gain an understanding of the erosion patterns during hydraulic flushing in a reservoir. Considering the importance of this issue, two modes of flushing operation for control of sedimentation were perfor ...

Recent natural disasters that seriously affected critical infrastructure (CI) with significant socio-economic losses and impact revealed the need for the development of reliable methodologies for vulnerability and risk assessment. In this paper, a risk-bas ...

Flow processes near the (concave) outer bank in curved river reaches are investigated in a laboratory flume, with focus on the influence of the bank roughness. An outer-bank cell of reversed secondary flow occurs for all the investigated roughness configurations of the outer bank. The cell widens the outer-bank boundary layer, which reduces the flow forcing on the bank, but also advects high-momentum fluid toward the lower part of the bank, which enhances the flow forcing on the bank. Increasing the roughne

The river inflow in a natural lake with important suspended sediment load during floods, can impact water quality by mobilizing dissolved matters like phosphorous from deep to surface waters. Generally due to thermal stratification in prealpine lakes, the ...
