Hydropeaking, resulting from rapid starting and shut-down of turbines, is one of the major hydrological alterations in Alpine streams. The upper Aare River basin in Switzerland comprises a complex high-head storage hydropower scheme. The significant turbin ...

Extreme flood simulation with synthetic extreme precipitation events raises unavoidable questions about the choice of initial conditions. State-of-the-art extreme flood estimation frameworks propose to address these questions with the help of semicontinuou ...

In this research, the flow features around a spur dike located in a 90˚ sharp channel bend have been studied experimentally in detail. Results showed that the effects of the spur dike on upstream sections increased by increasing α (spur dike location from ...

The total storage capacity of the reservoirs in Switzerland represents only 42% of their annual production of electricity, but secures approximately 100% of hydropower’s contribution to the winter electricity supply. In order to avoid spilling, the storage ...

Reservoirs represent an important source of energy that should be preserved and sustained. However, the lifetime of reservoirs is being reduced due to natural processes such as sedimentation. To face this problem, different sediment mitigation techniques a ...

The impingement of high-velocity water jets on unlined plunge pools causes scour on the rock foundations. The scour process is the result of complex physical phenomena that happen consecutively. Turbulence and dynamic pressures play a major role, especially in the jet development during air travel, in the diffusion process in the pool, in the pressure fluctuations in the water-rock interface and in the pressure propagation inside rock fissures. Air entrainment significantly influences the whole process. Air

Sediment traps are crucial elements for flood protection in mountain rivers with high sediment transport capacity. Existing structures often interrupt the channel connectivity. Ideally, a sediment trap should be permeable for bed load during non-hazardous ...

The trap efficiency of a shallow reservoir depends on the characteristics of the inflowing sediments and the retention time of the water in the reservoir, which in turn are controlled by the reservoir geometry. With the purpose of controlling the trapped a ...

Confluences with low discharge and momentum ratios, where narrow steep tributaries with high sediment load join a wide low-gradient main channel that provides the main discharge, are often observed in high mountain regions such as in the upper- Rhone river ...

In the framework of the African DAms ProjecT (ADAPT), an integrated water resource management study in the Zambezi Basin is currently under development. In view of the sparse gauging network for rainfall monitoring, the observations from spaceborne instrumentation currently produce the only available rainfall data for a large part of the basin. Three operational and acknowledged high resolution satellite derived estimates: the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission product 3B42 (TRMM 3B42), the Famine Early Wa

Dams trap sediment in the upstream reservoir, which may lead to river bed armoring, streambank erosion and failure, channel incision and reduction of the morphological diversity in the downstream river reaches. The replenishment of sediment is a mitigation ...

River reaches downstream dams where a constant residual flow discharge is imposed, often lack sediment supply and periodic inundation due to the absence of natural flood events. In this study, a two-year return flood was released from an upstream reservoir ...

The Swiss confederation aims to phase out nuclear power production with its Energy Strategy 2050 program by increasing the renewable energy contribution to its overall energy generation. Hydroelectricity, which is the most important form of renewable energ ...

First applied in the 1980’s, the artificial replenishment of sediments is one technique proposed to solve the problem of sediment deficit downstream dams. The present experimental research aims at improving the technique of river replenishment and at provi ...

Uncertainty affects hydrological modelling efforts from the very measurements (or forecasts) that serve as inputs to the more or less inaccurate predictions that are produced. Uncertainty is truly inescapable in hydrology and yet, due to the theoretical and technical hurdles associated with its quantification, it is at times still neglected or estimated only qualitatively. In recent years the scientific community has made a significant effort towards quantifying this hydrologic prediction uncertainty. Despi

Tsunamis, impulse waves, and dam-break waves are rare but catastrophic events, associated with casualties and damage to infrastructures. An adequate description of these waves is vital to assure human safety and to generate resilient structures. Furthermor ...

The influence of the air entrained by water jets on the dynamic pressures applied on the bottom of a plunge pool and inside underlying fissures was analyzed with systematic experiments. The large experimental facility reproduced aerated high-velocity jets ...

In systematic tests on a physical model, the influence of fast and repeated change of operations between generating and pumping modes on turbulence and sedimentation process by fine sediments in a rectangular cuboid is examined. It is studied how turbulence and settling down of fine sediments is affected by discharge, duration of pumped storage sequences and the intake/outlet location.-Prior to laboratory tests, several scenarios with and without sediments were simulated in a numerical model. A comparison b

The failure of steel liner of pressure shafts of hydropower plants can have catastrophic consequences. The partial or total loss of the liner support’s rigidity is characterized by a local change of the hydro-acoustic properties and creates reflection boundaries for the water waves. This paper presents a new monitoring method for detecting and locating weak reaches by processing reflected water-hammer waves at the boundaries of the shaft. These water-hammers are generated experimentally by a shut-off valve

Sediment detention basins are implemented on mountain rivers to trap solid material that may aggravate the flooding of downstream settlements. However, retention structures built in the past may unnecessarily retain sediment during non-hazardous flood even ...
