Systematic experimental investigations have been performed under uniform flow conditions in a channel whose banks are equipped with large scale rectangular roughness elements. The practical motivation of this project is to see how restoration of banks, suc ...

The dependence of curvature-induced secondary flow on the curvature ratio H/R and the Froude number Fr was systematically investigated in a series of 18 experiments in a sharply-curved laboratory flume. The investigated flow depths were 0.9 m, 0.13 m, 0.19 ...

Reservoir sedimentation is a worldwide problem affecting sustainable storage use as well as sediment transport downstream of dams. Various techniques are applied for sediment mitigation, among which, venting of turbidity currents. This paper reviews, discu ...

The development of a methodology for extreme flood estimation is the aim of the project CRUEX++. This project follows the CRUEX project which aimed at the development of a PMP-PMF methodology (PMP=Probable Maximum precipitation, PMF=Probable Maximum Flood). Numerous tools, models and methods have been developed during the last years. The goal of the CRUEX++ project is to combine and enrich these elements leading to a methodology for extreme flood estimations in order to verify dam safety. A PhD thesis has b

The Milibach River between Hasliberg-Reuti and Meiringen agglomerations in Switzerland has a limited hydraulic capacity leading to frequent flooding. During the 2005 flood event, large populated areas were inundated and damages exceeding many millions of Swiss francs occurred (Fig. 1). The deficit of the river flow capacity is essentially caused by a reduction of river cross sections due to local sediment deposits which lead to the overtopping of the lateral embankments

La sédimentation de la charge en suspension dans les réservoirs est un phénomène assez complexe à gérer. Des solutions existent pour maitriser ou réduire l’alluvionnement mais elles ne sont généralement pas faciles à expliquer, surtout dans les retenues tr ...

River channel confluences form important morphological components of any river system. This article presents the results of an investigation on a natural river confluence in Switzerland. The aim of the field work performed at the confluence of the Sarine ( ...

The analysis aims at analysing the evolution of the 0°C isothermal altitude during intense rainfall events. The following steps are followed: • The rainfall events of around 100 meteorological stations measuring at hourly time step are considered. • Two meteorological sounding stations launching two weather balloons per day are considered. • The variation of the 0°C is analysed depending on the rainfall event duration. • The analysis is carried out distinguishing between winter (December-February) and summe

The paper focuses on the development of the hydraulic–hydrological model used to simulate water resources management scenarios in the Zambezi River basin. The main challenges of the implementation of the model are the scarcity of continuous reliable discha ...

History shows that the economic prosperity of a society and its cultural wealth was always closely related to the level of the development of the hydraulic schemes, including dams and reservoirs. In view of climate change, dams and reservoirs will and have ...

In the present communication, the 29 graduates of the 2007-2009 MAS edition provide the results of their practical master thesis. The topics treated of these outstanding thesis projects cover the wide field of hydraulic sc

Open-channel bends are characterized by complex interactions between streamwise flow, curvature-induced secondary flow and bed morphology. These bend effects cause erosion near the outer bank, and deposition near the inner bank. Previous laboratory experiments in a sharply curved flume with a mobile bed under clear-water scour conditions have shown that an air-bubble screen generated with a porous tube on the bed can counteract the curvature-induced secondary flow and lead to a shift of the maximum scour aw

The Arve River is the most important tributary of the Rhone River The Arve has a very high sediment transport capacity due to its steep slope in the Alpine Valley. These solid materials deposit in the Rhone River. Because of the high sedimentation rate in ...

Although oil barriers have been used for many years to contain slicked oil in open seas, the effect of waveson them has been rarely considered. In the present study, we investigated the response of rigid and flexible oil containment barriers in the presenc ...

River channelization and the construction of high-head storage schemes have been the basis of agricultural and socio-economic development in many alpine regions. One example is the Upper-Rhone River in Switzerland. The Upper-Rhone's morphology changed cons ...
