Dam construction and large reservoir projects are essential for sustainable economic developments especially in developing countries like Iran. Such big projects, could have major social and environmental impacts. At this point, Environmental Impact Assess ...

Anumber of major hydropower schemes have been developed in the lambezi river basin to ensure astable energy output. Although this main objective is well met, there is considerable scope to optimize operation of the plants. This paper presents the results of an integrated water resource management study, called the African Dams Project (ADAPTl, and focuses on how hydropower schemes can be adopted to meet environmental needs.

Reservoir sedimentation is gaining growing attention as dams are aging, due to economic and environmental consequences. Venting of turbidity currents is one of many sediment management techniques, highly recommended when water is in shortage. The venting o ...

The main questions arising during a dam project in view of safety against scour formation downstream of spillways and bottom outlets are discussed. First the physical proc-esses involved in scour formation are analyzed based on the state-of-the-art of the knowledge and understanding. Then the different scour evaluation methods from simple empirical formula to complex scour models are briefly presented. The main difficulties encountered when estimat-ing scour depth are discussed, such as the choice of the ap

This study addresses the design of riprap aprons as a scour countermeasure near abutments under clear-water conditions. It deals with the lateral extent of riprap aprons and the geometry of the scour hole prevailing at the apron edge. The study applies to ...

Numerous stepped spillways were built to date, namely on RCC gravity dams or on valley flanks besides embankment or rockfill dams, while some others are currently under design or construction. In some cases, slope changes may be required on stepped chutes, ...

Stepped spillways are frequently limited to specific discharges under around 30 m2/s due to concerns about potential cavitation damages. A small air concentration can prevent such damages and the design of bottom aerators is well established for smooth chu ...

S waves are seismic body waves meaning they travel through the Earth's interior. Their velocity is slower thant that of P waves, and they are normally the second major phase to be observed on a seismorgram, and are therefore also referred to as secondary waves.

Ther is a standing challeng in obtaining long localized records of rainfall data in many large river basins of the developing world. Recent spaceborne instrumentation offers a constente source of rainfall information, but this information covers only a rel ...

Bottom chute aerators are installed to prevent cavitation damages and they have been studied in detail on smooth spillways. In parallel, stepped spillways became widespread in the past decades. Research has shown that stepped spillways may be endangered ev ...

In parallel to their most frequent application as an auxiliary dam spillway, piano key weirs (PKWs) are also installed on low-head barrages in combination with run-off-the-river power plants. Their efficient rating curve, advantageous behavior under driftw ...

Tsunamis, impulse-waves and dam-break waves have affected humanity in recent decades and the construction of vertical shelters can provide safety to people. However, for non-critical infrastructures, typically residential houses of lower height, overtoppin ...

After a major flood with a peak discharge of 177 m³/s in the city of Martigny (Valais, Switzerland) by the alpine river Drance in October 2000, the local authorities are strengthening efforts for the protection of the urban area. The Drance has an annual a ...

Dams trap sediments in the upstream reservoir, thus the continuity in sediment transport along the river is interrupted. Several negative aspects related to the lack of sediment supply were observed downstream many dams and the artificial replenishment of ...

Chancy-Pougny is a run-of-river dam on the Swiss-French border constructed in the early 1920s. Since its inauguration, the operation of the four spillway gates was responsible for a progressive erosion of the stilling basin. Thus, a hybrid modelling was pe ...

Sedimentation is known as the process of filling up natural lakes and manmade reservoirs by sediment transforming finally into floodplaimns. Its main reason is the sediment yield transported by rivers as suspended or bed load into the reservoirs. Reservoir ...
