Using high-strength steels for pressure shafts and tunnel liners and taking into account significant rock mass participation allows the design of comparatively thin steel liners in hydropower projects. Nevertheless, during emptying of waterways, these steel linings may be endangered by buckling. Compared with traditional measures such as increased steel liner thickness and stiffeners, pressure relief valves are a very economical solution for protection of steel liners against critical external pressure and

Experiments involving both a circular wall jet and an impinging jet were conducted, as occurring at irrigation control structures or at dams with combined crest and low-level spillways. The effects of the non-dimensional parameters on the scour hole dimensions have been investigated. It was found that the effect of the expansion ratio of the channel width to the jet diameter is negligible for values larger than 22.5 and 35, depending on the experimental conditions. The scour depth decreases with increasing

Waves impacting against structures can create damages and devastation. This topic regained interest after some recent catastrophic events and the present paper investigates the main phases of a wave impacting against a residential house commonly observed i ...

Block Stability in 3 Dimensions (BS3D) is an incremental-iterative algorithm and code to analyse general failure modes of rock blocks subjected to generic forces, including non-conservative forces such as water pressure. This algorithm is used to investigate the effect of high-velocity water jet impact on the stability of single rock blocks in plunge pools. After reviewing the literature, an approach is proposcd to estimate the dynamic water pressure fluctuations at the pool bottom and in rock fractures. Th

Fluctuating bottom-pressures on stepped chutes are relevant for the spillway design. An abrupt slope reduction causes a local alteration of the bottom-pressure development. Little information is available regarding the air–water flow properties near an abr ...

As the need for energy is increasing, the challenges in the future are to operate existing large hydraulic schemes in more sustainable ways and to develop future water resources projects that are able to achieve a better balance between environmental and s ...

Low velocity and shallow-depth flow fields often are a challenge to most velocity measuring instruments. In the framework of a research project on reservoir sedimentation, the influence of the reservoir geometry on sediment transport and deposition was stu ...

A new EU initiative, Hydropower-Europe, is reported here. This work, soon to be launched, will provide a framework for the hydropower sector in Europe to define a research and innovation agenda, and technology roadmap. The initiative is expected to help po ...

Over the past decades, significant advances have been achieved in hydraulic structures for dams, namely in water release structures such as spillway weirs, chutes, and energy dissipators. This editorial presents a brief overview of the eleven papers in thi ...

The HydroES 2021 Conference (on the first day of the Société Hydrotechnique de France [SHF] meetings, 22 September 2021) was an opportunity for the HYDROPOWER EUROPE Forum to present its vision and the results achieved for the development of hydropower in ...

It is known that bedload fluctuates over time in steep rivers with wide grain size distributions, even under conditions of constant sediment feed and water discharge. Bedload fluctuations, which are a consequence of grain sorting, are periodic and are rela ...

For fatigue life estimation as well as for fatigue testing analysis of welded structures by local stresses approaches, the stress concentration factor (SCF) at the weld must be known. Full penetration butt welded joints are extensively used in steel struct ...

Numerical modeling of sediment transport in reservoirs, especially for sudden events such as flushing, is still a challenging research topic. In the present study, sediment transport and sediment flushing are simulated for a Peruvian reservoir. Situated in ...

To enhance the understanding of hydrodynamics of oil spill containment booms, numerical simulations of different booms were carried out using the state-of-the-art Computational Fluid Dynamics program, FLUENT. Single and double barriers containing oil over ...

The paper describes and discusses the application of a guided evolutionary approach for the optimization of water distribution networks. Initially developed for the Battle of the Water Networks II (BWN-II), the approach was adapted and improved for competi ...

Since its inauguration, in 1993, the horizontal weir crest of the Olympic fountain in Lausanne has suffered from differential settlings leading to a difference in level of more than 30 mm. The settling involves a visible non-uniform discharge distribution ...

The Piano Key Weir (PKW) is a hydraulically attractive alternative to linear overflow weirs, increasing the unit discharge for similar heads and spillway widths. This advantage allows for operating dam reservoirs on an increased level and thereby provides an enhanced retention volume, resulting of the nonlinear set-up of PKWs being folded back and forth to make repeating cycles or keys. PKWs are relatively novel structures, so that a comprehensive and systematic model test series is presented herein providi
