Side weirs are widely used to control flow processes along a channel or river. The lateral loss of water reduces the sediment transport capacity in the main-channel leading to local sediment deposition near the overflow. The design discharge to be diverted ...

Piano Key weirs (PKWs) are a hydraulically attractive alternative to linear overflow weirs, increasing the unit discharge at the unregulated spillway inlet for similar heads and spillway widths. This advantage, allowing for operation of dam reservoirs on elevated supply levels thus providing an increased retention volume, is a result of the non-linear nature of PKWs being folded back and forth to make repeating cycles or keys. As PKWs are relatively novel structures, few practical design criteria are availa

Open-channel bends are characterized by a bed morphology where erosion occurs near the outer bank and a point bar develops at the inner bend. This morphology is induced by complex interactions between the streamwise flow, the curvature-induced secondary flow and the bed topography. Several techniques already exist to counteract the development of bend scour, which can endanger foundations of structures. However, existing techniques mostly imply substantial construction works in the river. Preliminary labora

This paper investigates the morphologic impacts of the widening of tributaries in confluence zones by means of systematic hydraulic tests performed in a confluent laboratory flume. The confluent channels are connected with an angle of 90° and the main channel is 0.50 m wide. The tributary is 0.15 m wide in the reference configuration and enlarged to 0.30 m over a length of 0.45 m in the widened configuration. Experiments are carried out under mobile bed conditions. Sediments with a wide grain size distribut

In the aim of assessing the potential of tributary widening with respect to river rehabilitation in fluvial systems, attention is focused on the effects of tributary widening on the morphodynamic processes of confluence zones. Systematic tests were performed in a confluence flume where the confluent channels are connected with an angle of 90° and the main channel is 0.50 m wide. Three different widening of the tributary are compared to a reference configuration with a constant tributary width of 0.15 m for

During floods, the bedload transport of steep headwaters can exceed the hydraulic transport capacity of milder downstream reaches where settlements are often situated. Therefore, sediment retention barriers are typically installed upstream of such sensible ...

Taking advantage of the withdrawal of some glaciers, several new dams will eventually be constructed in Switzerland in the coming years as a part of the 2050 energy strategy. The Trift dam, located in Berner Oberlands in Switzerland, is one of these new pr ...

The design of hydropower is determined by estimates and long-term forecasts. These forecasts and estimates are highly uncertain and make performance evaluation and design choices challenging. Effective values deviating from the estimates can have a signifi ...

Within the fluvial network, confluences are particular areas characterized by great ecological value where flow dynamics and bed morphology are much influenced by local patterns. The aim of this article is to describe the influence of the convergence angle ...

In the present study the effect of the skew-angle of the alignment of tandem piers on local scour depth around them is investigated. The tandem piers were aligned with different skew-angles of 𝜃𝜃 = 0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 90° with respect to the flow direction. ...

Turbidity currents may be a relevant lever to manage the accumu-lation of fine sediments in reservoirs. In this paper, we propose to show how two different numerical codes simulate the propagation of turbidity currents. Telemac 3D and Ansys CFX 17.1 solver ...

In Europe, renewable energy sources are rapidly growing but are often linked to a highly volatile production, as for solar and wind energy. Pumped-storage plants have become very important since they can ensure grid stability and safe power supply at any m ...

The hydro-morpho-sedimentary processes in confluence hydrodynamic zones (CHZ) subject to a local widening of the tributary were investigated in a series of laboratory experiments that were representative of the 20 major confluences of the Upper Rhone River ...

Kariba Dam is a 128 m high arch dam located on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. The dam has been constructed in the late 1950s and formed at that time the largest man-made lake worldwide. The dam is equipped with 6 flood gates, each about 9 m high by 9 m wide, allowing for a total outflow of about 9000 m3/s. The plunge pool downstream of the dam consists of sound and relatively hard gneiss bedrock and is basically unlined. Nevertheless, frequent outflows generated between 1962 and 1981 have formed an

Sediment management in reservoirs situated in mountainous regions is a critical operational concern with direct implications in live storage sustainability and therefore in production revenues. The paper presents the main results of a physical model study ...

The lifetime and efficiency of dams is endangered by the process of sedimentation. To ensure the sustainable use of reservoirs, many sediment management techniques exist, among which venting of turbidity currents. Nevertheless, a number of practical questi ...

Advances in dam construction techniques have significantly increased the number of stepped spillways implemented worldwide. Although stepped chutes provide enhanced energy dissipation along the chute, as compared to smooth chutes, an adequate energy dissip ...

This paper focuses on the dynamics of fine sediments in reservoirs exposed to hydropower cascade or pumped-storage operations. The aim is at analysing the influence of parameters such as the flow inlet and flow outlet relative position, the jet hydrodynami ...

Transport of suspended sediment between the two reservoirs of a pumped-storage plant in Switzerland was monitored over an 8-month period. A turbidity probe was installed on the upstream end of the pressure shaft, in which real-time monitoring was ensured b ...

The design of open check dams at mountain rivers for flood protection has an essential impact on the sediment budget of downstream river reaches. A key issue is the bedload transfer hindering and retention which can be influenced by the geometry of the openings of check dams. Contemporary design concepts provoke the retention of too much or insufficient bedload with regard to the downstream transport capacity. This dysfunction can cause continuous maintenance works or endanger downstream infrastructures, re
