In recent years, spillway rehabilitation has increased in importance and become the subject of many projects worldwide. One solution for this problem is the implementation of a new type of labyrinth spillway, called Piano Key Weir (PK-Weir ). This is an excellent alternative for increasing the overflow capacity of existing dams. Similarly to traditional labyrinth weirs, the hydraulic capacity of a PK-Weir is a function of its geometrical characteristics. Currently, there is a lack of systematic experiments,

The dependence of curvature-induced secondary flow on the curvature ratio H/R and the Froude number Fr was systematically investigated in a series of 18 experiments in a sharply-curved laboratory flume. The investigated flow depths were 0.9 m, 0.13 m, 0.19 ...

In the last decades numerous stepped spillways were built, mostly on the downstream face of roller compacted concrete (RCC) dams. Stilling basins are often used as an energy dissipater. Although the hydraulics of stepped chutes was extensively investigated ...

The present review paper aims at collecting and discussing the research work, numerical and experimental, carried out in the field of Fluid–Structure Interaction (FSI) in one-dimensional (1D) pressurized transient flow in the time-domain approach. Backgrou ...

The deposition behavior of fine sediment is an important phenomenon, which remains unclear to engineers concerned about reservoir sedimentation. In the present case bed level changes, suspended sediment concentrations, and flow velocities were measured in ...

Peak power production in hydroelectric storage power plants results in frequent and intense flow variations in the rivers downstream of the plants. Fish populations can be negatively impacted when subjected to these so-called hydropeaking phenomena. In res ...

Free crest spillways are hydraulically efficient and safe in operation. Since their discharge capacity is directly proportional to the crest length several types have been developed with the purpose to increase the length of the latter. Among these types traditional labyrinth weir spillways have been studied and used for a long time. Their hydraulic performance and the effect of the involved geometrical parameters are well known. Nevertheless, their design still has to be based on experimentally derived and

Flood release structures of high-head dams generate high-velocity plunging jets. These may scour the downstream rocky riverbed and even damage the dam foundation. Assessment of the scour evolution is essential to ensure the safety of the dam and appurtenant structures, as well as to guarantee the stability of its abutments. In the framework of a research project, near-prototype scaled experimental installation generating high-velocity jet impact in a plunge pool has been equipped with an artificial rock bloc

The local deterioration of the mechanical properties of steel-lined pressure shafts and tunnels induces a decrease of the celerity and an increase of the energy attenuation of water hammer waves. This deterioration may arise from the weakening of the backfill concrete and the surrounding rock mass, which provide the radial support of the steel liner. A new online monitoring system implemented and tested at the Grimsel II pumped-storage shaft in Switzerland is presented. The difficulties encountered during t

For the case study area of the upper Aare River catchment in Switzerland with large mountain glaciers, where a complex storage hydropower scheme is located, the impact of climate change on runoff was simulated. Future runoff was assessed for the ongoing ce ...

To simulate the retaining capacity of an oil barrier in an uniform flow field, experiments were carried out in a laboratory flume at Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL), Laboratory of Hydraulic Constructions (LCH) by using Light Expanded Clay A ...

With more than 220 large dams in operation, compared to its surface of some 41ʹ000 km2, Switzerland has a very large fleet. They were erected to meet various economic and protection needs. Their main assignments concern the storage of water for later use, ...

The use of existing hydroelectricity multi-reservoir systems for flood protection may be an efficient approach in many catchment areas. The assessment of the protection potential offered by the hydropower plants during floods requires a comprehensive analysis of the catchment area, including the simulation of flood scenarios. A methodology for the optimization of turbine and bottom outlet operations of multi-reservoir systems during floods is presented. Based on a theoretical catchment configuration, the mo

The return period of combinations of events that are relevant to dam risk analysis is very high. It falls in a range of hundreds to millions of years, but remains hard to quantify with precision. Deterministic approaches to dam safety assessment typically ...

Chancy-Pougny is a run-of-river dam on the Swiss-French border constructed in the early 1920s. Since its inauguration, the operation of the four spillway gates was responsible for a progressive erosion of the stilling basin. Thus, a hybrid modelling was pe ...

The Zambezi Basin, a semi-arid 1.4 Mio km2 catchment area spreading across eight countries, constitutes a highly complex system. With several large dams, namely Kariba, Cahora Bassa, Kafue Gorge and Itezhi-Tezhi, the basin’s hydrology is also influenced by vast wetlands with high ecological value such as the Barotse plains, the Mana Pools or the Kafue flats. The African DAms ProjecT (ADAPT) is an interdisciplinary research project aiming to develop an integrated set of methods that help assessing the ecolog

In recent decades, stepped chutes followed by a stilling basin became a standard for spillways of dams. The comprehensive knowledge of stepped chute approach flows on internal air-water flow properties of the hydraulic jump is still too limited for an appr ...

Free surface flows in several shallow rectangular basins have been analyzed experimentally, numerically and theoretically. Different geometries, characterized by different widths and lengths, are considered as well as different hydraulic conditions. First, ...

elements. In addition to a prismatic reference channel, 41 different configurations of rectangular bank cavities have been investigated. The purpose was to study the effect of large-scale bank roughness on steady and unsteady flows. The macro-roughness of ...

The Klingnau reservoir, situated in north Switzerland, suffers from sedimentation in its left enlargement. The dam is placed in the Aare River about 1 km upstream of its confluence with the Rhine. Due to natural conservation and flood protection reasons, i ...
