In the hydropower sector, the weight of electro-mechanical equipment is an important input data. During the design stage, it allows to estimate material cost, to perform Life Cycle Assessments and to consider adequate load factors on the supporting structu ...

Alpine rivers have been channelized by significant river training works in the past two centuries and are now disconnected from their natural environment. In adition, their flow regime is often affected by hydropower plant operation. Also the risk of flood damages is increasing continuously due to urbanization requiring additional flood protection measures. Nevertheless, such trained rivers still have high potential for renewable energy production. Furthermore, there is often a need for biotope restoration

Extreme flood estimates for dam safety are routinely obtained from hydrologic simulations driven by selected design storms. The temporal structure of such design storms can be obtained from Rainfall Mass Curves (RMCs), which are adimensionalized curves of ...

Hydrodynamic waves are an unsteady flow motion generated by rapid water level rise. In nature, such events can be found in dam-break waves, impulse waves and tsunamis. These phenomena are rare, but highly destructive. The present study is based on an exper ...

When applied to mountain torrents, sediment transport formulae habitually overestimate the bedload by several orders of magnitude, even if they have been developed for steep slopes. The reason is that the influence of macro-roughness elements, such as large immobile boulders which have an impact on flow conditions, is not taken into account. Larger roughness elements induce an increased form drag, implying a lower shear stress available for sediment entrainment. Preliminary tests carried out in a laboratory

The implementation of a new type of labyrinth spillway, called PKW (Piano Key Weir) reveals as a performing alternative for increasing the overflow capacity of existing dams. The optimal hydraulic design of such structure is however not obvious due to the large number of involved parameters. The present work explores experimentally the most relevant geometrical parameters, such as width, length, height and slope of keys and also the upstream and downstream flow conditions. The rating curve of a unit structu

Due to the European electricity market liberalization and the appearance of other renewable electricity producers, an increase of installed peak power capacity is relevant to provide larger amount of electricity in a shorter turbine duration. When the disc ...

This article is aimed at quantifying and discussing the relative magnitude of key terms of the equation of conservation of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) in the inter-stem space of a flow within arrays of vertical cylinders simulating plant stems of emerge ...

Systematic hydraulic model tests were performed in a 90° curved channel with an undulated wall at the outer bank. The outer wall consisted of trapezoidal elements of 0.1 m depth and 0.33 m length. Three discharges (150, 180 and 210 l/s) and three bed slopes (0.35, 0.5 and 0.7%) with a wide grain size distribution of the bed sediments (dm = 8.7mm) were tested. The following parameters for subcritical flow conditions were studied: bed morphology, water level, sediment transport, longitudinal water velocities

Reservoir sedimentation is worldwide a significant long term problem and requires in view of the current mitigation measures an alternative and more sustainable solution. This challenge motivated the present study with the purpose to develop an alternative efficient method to release sediment out of a reservoir. The concept is based on the release of sediment through the headrace tunnel and turbines whereby a special focus was set on the fine sediment in the area in front of the power intakes. Specific jet

Orifices are largely used in pipeline systems. The most common application is to measure the discharge of the water flowing through. However, orifices may be used to adapt hydroelectric power plants submitted to moderate increase of installed generation ca ...

The simulation of run-off in an alpine catchment area equipped with complex hydropower schemes is presented by the help of an especially developed tool, called Routing System, which can combine hydrological modelling and operation of hydraulic elements. The model allows simulating the operating mode of complex storage hydropower plants and its impacts on the downstream river system for different scenarios, taking into account natural and anthropogenic influences. The paper presents the modelling of the Ober

The Zambezi river basin, one of the largest in Africa, holds significant hydropower potential, which has yet tobe exploited. To make the most of this opportunity and address the challenges it poses, local Stakeholders must coordinate efforts, politically, ...

HYDROPOWER-EUROPE is a project selected by European Commission after the call H2020 LC-SC3-CC-4-2018, whose the scope is “bringing together stakeholders of the hydropower sector in a forum” to develop a roadmap of research and innovation for new hydropower ...

Orifices can be used for throttling surge tanks, which allows for increased design discharge at existing powerplants without significant geometrical modifications. To improve knowledge about the behaviour of orifices and their cavitation risk, a systematic ...

Based on systematic experiments on the influence of air entrainment on rock block stability in plunge pools impacted by high-velocity jets, this study presents adaptations of a physically based scour model. The modifications regarding jet aeration are implemented in the Comprehensive Scour Model (CSM), allowing it to reproduce the physical-mechanical processes involved in scour formation conceming the three phases; namely, water, rock, and air. The enhanced method considers the reduction of momentum of an a

As several of other run-of:river hydropower plants, the hydraulic scheme of Lavey on the Rhone River in Switzerland is concerned by continuous reservoir sedimentation. To determine the flood evacuation capacity of the weir as well as the flow distribution ...

Venting of turbidity currents is known as an efficient measure to prevent reservoir sedimentation and is applied in many reservoirs globally. It has several economic and ecological advantages compared with other evacuation methods. In the literature, numer ...

In this paper, a case study on the estimations of extreme floods is described. The watershed chosen for the analysis is the catchment of the Limmernboden dam situated in Switzerland. Statistical methods and the simulation based "Probable Maximum Precipitat ...

Local scour around the obstacles such as bridge pier is the result of complex interaction between turbulent flow and sediment particles at the mobile bed. The entrainment of sediment particles from the bed is stochastic in nature and it is strongly influen ...
