TORPEX is a basic plasma physics toroidal device located at the CRPP-EPFL in Lausanne. In TORPEX, a vertical magnetic field superposed on a toroidal field creates helicoidal field lines with both ends terminating on the torus vessel. We review recent advances in the understanding and control of electrostatic interchange turbulence, associated structures and their effect on suprathermal ions. These advances are obtained using high-resolution diagnostics of plasma parameters and wave fields throughout the who

Low frequency electrostatic instabilities are investigated on TORPEX [Fasoli, Labit, McGrath, Muller, Podesta, and Poli, Bull. Am. Phys. Soc. 48, 119 (2003)], a toroidal device for basic plasma physics experiments with a toroidal magnetic field 100 mT and ...

Within the range of plasma shapes and plasma currents investigated, the electron confinement time, Tau_E increases with density, elongation and negative triangularity (-0.4

A steady-state, fully noninductive plasma current has been sustained for the first time in a tokamak using electron cyclotron current drive only. In this discharge, 123 kA of current have been sustained for the entire gyrotron pulse duration of 2 s. Careful distribution across the plasma miner radius of the power deposited from three 0.5-MW gyrotrons was essential for reaching steady-state conditions. With central current drive, up to 153 kA of current have been fully replaced transiently for 100 ms. The no

Understanding cross field heat and particle transport is crucial in tokamaks, especially in the X-point and divertor regions. However, the complex magnetic field geometry and the associated turbulent and drift phenomena lead to large heat fluxes, rendering ...

A long, narrow, relativistic charged particle bunch propagating in plasma is subject to the self -modulation (SM) instability. We show that SM of a proton bunch can be seeded by the wakefields driven by a preceding electron bunch. SM timing reproducibility ...

Plasma treatments are currently being assessed as a seed processing technology for agricultural purposes. There is sufficient information as a proof-of-concept, but a lack of standardization in the methodology prevents a convincing evaluation of plasma tre ...

Basic aspects of fast ion transport in ideal interchange-mode unstable plasmas are investigated in the simple toroidal plasma device TORPEX. Fast ions are generated by a miniaturized lithium 6+ ion source with energies up to 1 keV, and are detected using a ...

Stability limits of highly elongated, D-shaped plasmas have been measured in the TCV (tokamak a configuration variable) tokamak. It is found that the plasma current is limited by kink-type disruptions, preceded by magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) mode activity. The mode structure has been analyzed using magnetic fluctuation and soft x-ray diagnostics. Mode numbers, growth rates, and experimental stability limits are consistent with ideal and resistive MHD models, based on measured plasma shapes and profiles. These

We have designed and built an optically isolated millimeter-wave detection system to prevent interference from a nearby, powerful, 2.45 GHz microwave source in millimeter-wave propagation experiments in the TORoroidal Plasma EXperiment (TORPEX). A series o ...

While atmospheric pressure plasma sources are emerging as potentially innovative instruments in medicine, some aspects of the interaction between plasma and biological substrates remain unclear. The high diversity in both sources and applications in the li ...

In the Tokamak a Configuration Variable [F. Hofmann, J.B. Lister, M. Anton et al., Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 36, B277 (1994)], inward or outward convection in the core of electron cyclotron heated and current driven plasmas is observed, depending on discharge conditions. In sawtoothing discharges with central electron cyclotron heating, outward convection is observed when a quasicontinuous m=1 kink mode is present, resulting in inverted sawteeth on the central electron density, while in the absence the

The scattering of millimeter-wave beams from electron density fluctuations and the associated beam broadening are experimentally demonstrated. Using a dedicated setup, instantaneous deflection and (de-)focusing of the beam due to density blobs on the beam ...

As a new concept of Neutral Beam Injectors (NBI) for DEMO-like reactors, SIPHORE (IRFM, CEA, in France) expects to extract negative deuterium ions and photo-neutralize the accelerated D-. The Swiss Plasma Center (SPC) of EPFL is involved in this project by ...

The mechanism for blob generation in a toroidal magnetized plasma is investigated using time-resolved measurements of two-dimensional structures of electron density, temperature, and plasma potential. The blobs are observed to form from a radially elongate ...

Research on the Tokamak à Configuration Variable (TCV) addresses a wide range of key questions relevant to ITER and future fusion power plants. Over the past two years, highly productive experimental campaigns have led to major advances across several areas: the ITER baseline scenario; pedestal properties in low-collisionality, peeling-limited conditions; and the development of high-

, non-inductive regimes. Alternative high-confinement scenarios have likewise received significant attention, with re

Recent advances in the suprathermal ion diagnostic in the basic plasma experiment TORPEX have inspired our comprehensive theoretical study of suprathermal ion transport. TORPEX, an example of a simple magnetized toroidal plasma (SMT), is equipped with a flexible fast ion source and detector capable of exploring fast ion dynamics in a wide range of positions and energies. We simulate an ensemble of ion tracer trajectories as specified by ideal interchange-mode turbulence imported from a validated numerical s

A precise characterization of the incoming proton bunch parameters is required to accurately simulate the self-modulation process in the Advanced Wakefield Experiment (AWAKE). This paper presents an analysis of the parameters of the incoming proton bunches used in the later stages of the AWAKE Run 1 data-taking period. The transverse structure of the bunch is observed at multiple positions along the beamline using scintillating or optical transition radiation screens. The parameters of a model that describe

The Tokamak Configuration Variable (TCV) tokamak (R = 0.88 m, a < 0.25 m, B < 1.54 T) programme is based on flexible plasma shaping and heating for studies of confinement, transport, control and power exhaust. Recent advances in fully sustained off-axis electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) scenarios have allowed the creation of plasmas with high bootstrap fraction, steady-state reversed central shear and an electron internal transport barrier. High elongation plasmas, kappa = 2.5, are produced at low nor

In order to better study conventional and alternative divertor configurations, the TCV Tokamak was recently upgraded. In-vessel graphite baffles were installed in the TCV chamber to delimit a separate divertor chamber from the core that required enhanced d ...
