Single-cell impedance flow cytometry (IFC) is a rapid, label-free diagnostic capable of resolving the dielectric properties of individual cells. Here, single-cell IFC is employed to investigate the effects of plasma-activated water (PAW) on E. coli. This d ...

Plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) was used to deposit SiOx thin films of varying thicknesses on parylene C substrates, using hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) as a precursor. The microstructure of SiOx coatings was analyzed using X-ray photoemis ...

We study experimentally the longitudinal and transverse wakefields driven by a highly relativistic proton bunch during self-modulation in plasma. We show that the wakefields' growth and amplitude increase with increasing seed amplitude as well as with the ...

In noninductively driven discharges, 0.9 MW second harmonic (X2) off-axis co-electron cyclotron current drive deposition is combined with 0.45 MW X2 central heating to create an electron internal transport barrier (eITB) in steady plasma conditions resulting in a 1.6-fold increase of the confinement time (tau(Ee)) over ITER-98L-mode scaling. The eITB is associated with a reversed shear current profile enhanced by a large bootstrap current fraction (up to 80%) and is sustained for up to 10 current redistribu

The tokamak a configuration variable (TCV) continues to leverage its unique shaping capabilities, flexible heating systems and modern control system to address critical issues in preparation for ITER and a fusion power plant. For the 2019-20 campaign its c ...

Sawtooth inversion radii and profile peaking factors of a large variety of ohmic and ECH heated L mode plasmas, including, elongations up to 2.6 and triangularities between -0.5 and 0.75, have been investigated in the TCV tokamak. In ohmic plasmas, normalized inversion radii and electron temperature profile peaking factors (corrected for sawtoothing effects) depend solely on the parameter (j)/q(0)j(0), irrespective of plasma shape. With ECH this parameter remains the main scaling parameter. Density profiles

The effect of plasma shaping (triangularity and elongation) on sawtooth stability is addressed as well as the technique of current profile broadening using off-axis ECH to enlarge the operational range towards higher elongations. The plasma shape strongly influences the sawtooth period and amplitude. This effect is emphasized by ECH, with the sawtooth period becoming shorter at low triangularity or at high elongation; for these plasma shapes, the pressure profile inside the q = 1 surface remains essentially

Current agricultural practices are not sustainable; however, the non-thermal plasma treatment of seeds may be an eco-friendly alternative to alter macroscopic plant growth parameters. Despite numerous successful results of plasma-seed treatments reported i ...

During initial studies of ECRH in the TCV tokamak, non-standard central MHD activities, such as humpbacks and saturated and inverted sawteeth, have been observed while changing the heating location, the ECRH power, the plasma shape and the safety factor. For edge safety factors q(alpha) > 4.5, safety factors on-axis q(0) < 1 and small plasmas, complete sawtooth stabilization was achieved with the present 1 MW gyrotron power, and it is likely that sawtooth stabilization can be achieved for all conditions at.

The existence of a critical pressure gradient needed to drive the interchange instability is experimentally demonstrated in the simple magnetized torus TORoidal Plasma EXperiment [A. Fasoli et al., Phys. Plasmas 13, 055902 (2006)]. This gradient is reached during a scan in the neutral gas pressure pn. Around a critical value for pn, depending on the magnetic configuration and on the injected rf power, a small increase in the neutral gas pressure triggers a transition in the plasma behavior. The pressure pro

We investigate the time evolution of the mean location and variance of a charged particle subject to random collisions that are Poisson distributed. The particle moves on a plane and is subject to a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the plane, so it ...

We investigate suprathermal ion dynamics in simple magnetized toroidal plasmas in the presence of electrostatic turbulence driven by the ideal interchange instability. Turbulent fields from fluid simulations are used in the nonrelativistic equation of ion motion to compute suprathermal tracer ion trajectories. Suprathermal ion dispersion starts with a brief ballistic phase, during which particles do not interact with the plasma, followed by a turbulence interaction phase. In this one simple system, we obser

Fully noninductive, steady-state electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) has been demonstrated for the first time in experiments carried out in the tokamak a configuration variable (TCV) [O. Sauter , Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 3322 (2000)]. By appropriately distributing six 0.45 MW ECCD sources over the discharge cross section, fully noninductive, stable, and stationary plasmas with I-p up to 210 kA were obtained for the full discharge duration of 1.9 s, corresponding to more than 900 energy confinement times and

The kink instability of a magnetized plasma column (flux rope) is a fundamental process observed in laboratory and in natural plasmas. Previous theoretical, experimental, and observational work has focused either on the case of periodic (infinite) ropes (r ...

A unique parabolic relation is observed to link skewness and kurtosis of density fluctuation signals, measured over the whole cross-section of the simple toroidal device TORPEX for a broad range of experimental conditions. This relationship is also valid f ...

Growth rates of the axisymmetric mode in vertically elongated plasmas in the Tokamak a Configuration Variable (TCV) are measured and compared with numerically calculated growth rates for the reconstructed equilibria. This comparison is made over a range of discharge parameters including elongation, triangularity and vertical position within the vacuum vessel. Growth rates increase with respect to increasing elongation, decreasing triangularity and increasing vertical distance from the top of the vacuum vess

A coupled heat and particle transport phenomenon, leading to particle depletion from the plasma core is observed in a variety of plasma conditions with centrally deposited electron cyclotron heating and electron cyclotron current drive in TCV. This phenomenon. which causes inverted sawteeth of the central density in sawtoothing discharges and leads to stationary hollow profiles in the absence of sawteeth. has been linked to the presence of m/n = 1/1 MHD modes. In particular, this phenomenon, known as 'densi

The local properties of the electron energy distribution function are investigated in the electron-cyclotron wave driven toroidal device TORPEX (Fasoli et al 2006 Phys. Plasmas 13 055902). The electron energy distribution function is measured by means of a ...

A large variety of shaped tokamak discharges have been created in the Tokamak a Configuration Variable (TCV) with main parameters B-T

In the simple magnetized torus TORPEX (R = 1 m, a = 0.2 m), we explore experimentally the accessibility of a high confinement mode, which is predicted by theory for this configuration [P. Ricci, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 225002 (2008)]. We consider different gases (H2, D, He, Ne, N2) and we measure the dependence of the temperature and density gradients upon the ratio γ/v’ExB (γ is the interchange linear growth rate and v’ExB is the velocity shear). We observe that gamma/v’ExB decreases from γ/v’ExB~6-7
