The TCV tokamak (R = 0.88 in, a < 0.25 in, BT < 1.54 T) is equipped with six 0.5 MW gyrotron sources operating at 82.7 GHz for second harmonic X mode ECH. By distributing the ECCD current sources over the discharge cross section, fully driven stationary plasmas with I-p = 210 kA, n(e0) = 2 x 10(19) m(-3), T-e0 approximate to 4 keV, were obtained for the full discharge duration of 2 s. Highly peaked electron temperature profiles with T-e0 up to 12 keV were obtained in central counter-current drive scenarios

Using the Lambert function, Guittienne et al. [Phys. Plasmas 25, 093519 (2018)] derived two-fluid solutions for radial Langmuir probes in collisionless and isothermal plasma. In this Brief Communication, we point out the close analogy with classical compre ...

Plasma wakefield acceleration is a promising technology to reduce the size of particle accelerators. The use of high energy protons to drive wakefields in plasma has been demonstrated during Run 1 of the AWAKE programme at CERN. Protons of energy 400 GeV d ...

Cavity Ring Down Spectroscopy (CRDS) is used to measure the D- absolute density produced in the helicon plasma reactor RAID (Resonant Antenna Ion Device) at the Swiss Plasma Center. The birdcage geometry of the helicon antenna produces a homogeneous, high- ...

We show in experiments that a long, underdense, relativistic proton bunch propagating in plasma undergoes the oblique instability, which we observe as filamentation. We determine a threshold value for the ratio between the bunch transverse size and plasma ...

The operating space of the TCV tokamak has been extended to higher elongation, kappa = 2.8, and higher normalized current, I-N = I-p/aB = 3.6MA/mT, than were previously attainable. This has been achieved by optimizing the parameters of the vertical position control system and by optimizing the plasma shape. Experimental current and beta limits were found to be consistent with ideal MHD stability calculations, using measured plasma shapes and profiles. The sawtooth period was measured as a function of elonga

The need for sustainable and reliable decontamination methods is driven by concerns regarding antibiotic resistance, as well as environmental and cost -efficiency challenges associated with traditional methods. Plasmaactivated water (PAW) holds significant ...

We present the first results of electron density and temperature measurements obtained from Thomson scattering at the helicon plasma source (HPS) for the AWAKE project. These measurements are compared to simulation results from a 1D power and particle bala ...

The TCV tokamak (B-T < 1.5 T, R approximate to 0.88 m, a < 0.25 m) has produced a wide variety of plasma configurations, both diverted and limited, with elongations kappa(a), ranging from 0.9 to 2.58, triangularities delta(a) from -0.7 to 1 as well as discharges with nearly rectangular cross sections. Plasma currents of 1 MA have been obtained in elongated discharges (kappa(a) approximate to 2.3). Ohmic discharges with delta(a) < 0 have smaller sawteeth and higher levels of MHD mode activity than plasmas wi

In the next generation of fusion reactors, such as DEMO, neutral beam injectors (NBIs) of high energy (0.8-1 MeV) deuterium atom swith high wall-plug efficiency (>50%) will be required to reach burning plasma conditions and to provide a significant amount ...

A specific experimental apparatus consisting of an ion source and a detector for the investigation of the interaction between suprathermal ions and drift-wave turbulence is developed on the toroidal plasma experiment. Due to the low plasma temperature (sim ...

Collisional dissipation is expected to be the primary damping mechanism for helicon waves in low-temperature, high-density, moderate magnetic field plasmas. Combining a normal-mode analysis with high-resolution magnetic field measurements, we validate this expectation across a broad parameter space. However, we identify a distinct regime where the measured helicon damping rate is reduced by nearly a factor of 2 compared with collisional predictions. In this regime, a second harmonic at 2ω is observed, contr

Resonant antennas are increasingly employed by the plasma industry, and the theory has now developed alongside the technological applications to the extent that it is timely to document the progress in this field to aid antenna design for future novel RF p ...

Detaching plasma blobs with very similar properties to tokamaks are observed in the basic toroidal plasma experiment TORPEX [ A. Fasoli et al., Phys. Plasmas 13, 055902 (2006) ]. The blobs originate from the breaking of wave crests of a drift-interchange w ...

Starting from a standard single null X-point configuration, a second order null divertor (snowflake (SF)) has been successfully created on the Tokamak à Configuration Variable (TCV) tokamak. The magnetic properties of this innovative configuration have bee ...

The physics of supra thermal test ions in turbulent plasmas can be conveniently studied in basic plasma physics devices, which allow high-resolution measurements of plasma and fast ion parameters and wave fields throughout the whole plasma cross-section. We describe recent advances in the development of an experimental setup consisting of a non-perturbative Li 6+ miniaturized ion source and a detector for the investigation of the interaction between supra thermal ions and drift/interchange–driven turbulence

Turbulent fast ion transport has been investigated in astrophisycal, laboratory and fusion plasmas. When gyro- and drift-averaging across plasma structures manifest as non-markovian and non-local effects, this results in generally non-diffusive transport. ...

The antimicrobial properties of non‐thermal plasma (NTP) offer promising applications in sterilizing temperature‐sensitive materials. This study investigates how treatment parameters affect the inactivation of Bacillus subtilis spores using a surface dielectric barrier discharge powered by a nanopulse supply. This setup enables NTP exposure without direct sample contact and under controlled conditions. The effects of sample distance (3−45 mm), exposure time (5–30 min), and relative humidity (RH) (40%–90%) w

A specific experimental apparatus consisting of an ion source and a detector for the investigation of the interaction between supra-thermal ions and drift-wave turbulence is developed on the TORoidal Plasma Experiment (TORPEX). Due to the small plasma temperature (~5eV), a spatially localized, small-size ion source (~4cm) mounted inside the vacuum vessel, with relatively low ion energy (~100eV-1keV) can be used. The source consists of an aluminosilicate Li-6 ion emitter (6 mm diameter, 10-30μA current) in

A large variety of plasma conditions has been created in TCV (Tokamak a Configuration Variable, B-T < 1.5 T, R-0 = 0.88 m, a < 0.25 m). They include limited and diverted discharges with elongations in the range 1-2.58, triangularities between -0.7 and 1 as well as 'square' shapes with plasma currents in the range 0.1-1 MA. Over the entire range of quasi-stationary ohmic conditions investigated we observe a correlation between electron pressure profiles and conductivity profiles, suggesting that [p]/p(0) app
