Electrostatic interactions dominate the diffusion of proteins in a nanochannel, which was measured and modeled for pH values above and below the isoelectric points of three lectin proteins. Maximal diffusion coefficients were obtained when the proteins wer ...

Ligament balance is an important and subjective task performed during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedure. For this reason, it is desirable to develop instruments to quantitatively assess the soft-tissue balance since excessive imbalance can accelerate ...

Controlled release coatings were developed for neuroprostheses with the aim of combating the tissue reaction following implantation in the brain. The coatings consist of poly(propylene sulfide) drug-eluting nanoparticles embedded in a poly(ethylene oxide) ...

This paper describes the fabrication of polyimide-based microelectrodes with embedded fluidic microchannels. The thin-film structures combine for the first time a fluidic system with microelectrodes for recording and stimulation of biological signals on a ...

An optimized 3D inkjet printing process is demonstrated for structuring alginate into a tissue-like microvasculature capable of supporting physiological flow rates. Optimizing the reaction at the single-droplet level enables wet hydrogel droplets to be stacked, thus overcoming their natural tendancy to spread and coalesce. Live cells can be patterned using this process and it can be extended to a range of other hydrogels.

A capacitance evaluation method based on the extraction of physical parameters from finite element (FE) analysis is presented. Mechanical simulations and this capacitance evaluation method were applied to a new, highly symmetrical, silicon accelerometer in view of globaly modeling the sensor system. The commercial hardware description language HDL-A(TM) is used to develop a compact behavioral macromodels for SPICE simulators.

We present the modeling and simulation of a photoacoustic sensor. Starting from detailed simulations of the microsystem components, i.e, the IR-source, the cavity, and the microphone, we present a global simulation of the detector. The temperature profile in the photoacoustic cavity has been studied. Analytical key design rules for optimization of the detector's performance are discussed.

Droplet microfluidics are characterized by the generation and manipulation of discrete volumes of solutions, generated with the use of immiscible phases. Those droplets can then be controlled, transported, analyzed or their content modified. In this wide d ...

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and SU-8 are currently two very commonly used polymeric materials in the microfluidics field for biological applications. However; there is a pressing need to find a simple, reliable, irreversible bonding method between these tw ...

Ca2+ plays a crucial role in cell communication. For example, periodical changes in Ca2+ concentration act as cell sig- nals. Intracellular Ca2+ signals have been measured by Ca2+ sensitive fluorescent dye [1]. In this study, extracellular Ca2+ variation w ...

We present a new flexible micro-fabricated polyimide-based platinum (Pt) array of four planar electrodes system for local stimulation of the rat retinal photoreceptor layer and simultaneous extracellular recording (ECR) from large population of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) using the MEA60 setup (Multi Channel Systems) in vitro conditions. Our results revealed that RGCs present On or/and Off light-driven responses on a majority of recorded sites. Local electrical stimulation induced excitatory responses in

Among immune correlates of clinical responses, tumor-specificneoantigens took the spotlight as relevant targets for cancerimmunotherapy. The implementation of pipelines forpersonalized cancer therapy remains challenging due to theprivacy, that is patient-s ...

This paper describes the development of a polyimide-based MEMS strain-sensing device. Finite element analysis was used to investigate an artificial knee implant and assist on device design and to optimize sensing characteristics. The sensing element of the ...

The invention provides for a steerable guidewire for insertion into a body cavity, characterized in that it comprises an elongated body (101) defining a longitudinally-arranged lumen (200) comprising i) a proximal end portion (100) and ii) a distal end por ...

A preferred frequency is identified, being usable to stimulate a neurological target within a mammalian body using at least one microelectrode positioned at or near the target. To establish efficient and effective stimulation, an impedance analyzer is prov ...

We present a channel geometry that allows for clean switching between different inlets of a microchip without any contamination of the inlets or the downstream flow. We drive this virtual valve with a pneumatic pressure setup that minimizes disturbance of ...

Retinal prostheses are being developed to restore vision in blind patients with photoreceptor degeneration. Electrodes arrays were subretinally implanted in transgenic P23H rats with their photoreceptors degenerated. Electrical stability of the implants wa ...

Specification, simulation and optimization of sensors and actuators can be done through behavioral modeling using analog hardware description languages. The resulting models can be used in conjunction with models of the associated electronics to simulate a complete microsystem. This paper presents VHDL 1076.1 modeling considerations applicable to microsystem design and simulation. The methodology will be applied in the case of a Hall magnetic sensor.
