A model showing the importance of the parameters characterizing ion transport through geometrically defined nanoslits filled with electrolyte is presented. A conductance plateau sin log-log scaled at low salt concentrations in the nanometer-sized apertures ...

Visual capabilities recovery for some kind of illness is possible through subretinal implantable device stimulation. Two possible architectures for retinal pixel are proposed, fabricated in 0.35mum CMOS and compared, including evaluation of electronic response on a human-tissue-like interface. In these solutions, power consumption has been proved to be dominated by electrode stimulation and, in normal light condition, typical consumption is below 1 mW/pixel. The proposed pixel architectures, with 120 mum (L

We present a description of ion transport through geometrically defined nanoslits. The description was obtained through impedance spectroscopy measurements of electrolytes with different physico-chemical parameters. The number of 50 nm high nanoslits prese ...

A microfluidic platform is developed for the synthesis of monodisperse, 100 nm, chitosan based nanoparticles using nanogelation with ATP. The resulting nanoparticles tuned and enhanced transport and electrochemical properties of Nafion based nanocomposite ...

This paper describes a simple system for the actuation of a biological fluid through micro-channels with a thermoactivated polymer actuator. This system is of interest for the development of single-use diagnostic test-strips since the actuation of the samp ...

The study of intracellular communication requires devices that can not only monitor the bioelectric activity, but also control and observe the biochemical environment at the cellular level. This paper reports on the development and characterisation of impl ...

We present the fabrication and evaluation of microdebubblers that are able to remove large bubbles while keeping a very low dead volume. The devices use a polytetrafluoroethylene membrane that is permeable to air in order to filter air bubbles out of an aqueous sample. The dead volume of the devices is less than one microliter, but bubbles as large as 60 microliters can be removed. This simple solution can be very useful for microfluidic devices for chemical or biological analysis that suffer from channel c

This paper presents a microfabricated impedance spectroscopy flow cytometer which permits rapid and easy dielectric characterization of cells as they flow in a microchannel. Both a simple theoretical model and a finite element simulation show that the effects of particle size dominate the entire spectrum. Dielectrophoretic forces are used to focus polystyrene beads along the centerline of the channel and decrease the spread in signal amplitude. Measurements of the beads show that size differences of less th

We demonstrate the detection of a molecular beam by means of a micromechanical momentum transfer detector operated in vibrational resonance. With a sensitive surface area of 0.5x0.3 mm(2) the small paddle allows us to detect a beam with 6.5x10(7) He atoms hitting the surface per second. The detector response time equals the damping time of the paddle oscillation of about 1 s. The detector is sensitive enough to measure intensities in molecular beam scattering experiments. The novel detection scheme has the

We present here a novel approach to fabricate nanoporous membranes based on the use of sacrificial template structures to individually define pore parameters such as geometry, shape, and placement. Based on this rationale two different nano-fabrication met ...

The simulation and characterization of a low-cost IR source are described. The IR emission is obtained from heated thin film resistors which are either self- suspended or deposited an a membrane, The simulation, performed with a finite difference method, shows that a reasonably good modulation can be obtained at 50 Hz and higher, Such specifications meet the requirements of various IR gas sensors such as photoacoustic sensors.

Continuous fluidic sampling systems allow collection of brain biomarkers in vivo. Here, we propose a new sequential and intermittent sampling paradigm using droplets, called Droplet on Demand (DoD). It is implemented in a microfabricated neural probe and a ...

A wide variety of whole cell bioreporter and biosensor assays for arsenic detection has been developed over the past decade. The assays permit flexible detection instrumentation while maintaining excellent method of detection limits in the environmentally ...

Volcano-shaped microelectrodes (nanovolcanoes) functionalized with nanopatterned self-assembled monolayers have recently been demonstrated to report cardiomyocyte action potentials after gaining spontaneous intracellular access. These nanovolcanoes exhibit ...

We present a novel technology for the simultaneous and simple impedimetric screening of multiple microfluidic channels with only one electrode pair. We have exploited the frequency dimension to distinguish between up to three channels. Each ‘sub-sensor’ po ...

Cell-derived membrane vesicles that are released in biofluids, like blood or saliva, are emerging as potential non-invasive biomarkers for diseases, such as cancer. Techniques capable of measuring the size and concentration of membrane vesicles directly in ...

The particle (1) is suitable for the manufacture of an implantable soft tissue engineering material and comprises: a three-dimensionally warped and branched sheet (2) where (i) the three-dimensionally warped and branched sheet (2) is made from a biocompati ...

Characterization of the mechanical and thermal properties of the high aspect- ratio, negative, UV resist, SU-S has been carried out. This resist allows for a broad range of thicknesses to be obtained with a single spin process. Standard exposure with a UV aligner has produced outstanding aspect ratios, 15 for lines and trenches. This type of performance lends itself well to MEIMS applications, packaging, micromolds, spacers, etc. Because of the simplicity of use of the resist in addition to the large range

We present here a microfluidic device for the chemical modification of particles. In order to alleviate diffusive mixing issues beads are pushed from a starting buffer to a reagent over a wide channel by an array of shifted electrodes. We also show that th ...
