Similarities and differences in the structure and shape of the metallic deposit were studied for photolytic and pyrolytic laser-induced chem. vapor deposition of Sn and Pt. The photolytically deposited thin metallic films appear to be more homogeneous and tend to be amorphous. The pyrolytically deposited films are polycryst. and are more irregular, in particular in the case of Sn where the hot drop-like particles coalesce on the surface yielding a microscopic deposit of quite varied sizes and shapes.

The photothermal laser induced CVD of Cu from its hexafluoroacetylacetonate trimethylvinylsilane deriv. was studied as a function of added H2O vapor pressure. The height, width, elec. cond., and chem. compn. of the deposited Cu lines are measured. Under anhyd. conditions, the lines were characterized by a low growth rate, high C contamination, and poor elec. resistivity. In the presence of H2O vapor, a high growth rate (1800 mm/min) and high purity Cu lines were obtained with a resistivity ratio of 1.1.

Because vascular occlusion has been observed as a consequence of photodynamic therapy (PDT), this method has been successfully used for the treatment of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). However, most conventiona ...

From a data set collected during the MEDCAPHOT-TRACE field campaign, we demonstrate that ozone fluxes can be detd. with a shot-per-shot DIAL instrument operated in the UV spectral region. This is done by the simultaneous reconstruction of ozone concns. and of wind speeds using the same sample of lidar returns. A correlation scheme is used for the wind velocity retrieval, in which the transport of the spatial inhomogeneities of the aerosol backscattering coeff. along the optical path of the system is analyze

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composition for diagnosing and/or treating cancerous pathologies in the field of urology. ;SOLUTION: The invention relates to a 5-aminolevulinic acid ester (E-ALA) solution for producing a pharmaceutical preparation usefu ...

The links between air pollution gas phase chem., aerosol chem. processes, and solar radiation are calcd. to improve air quality models. Air quality models are used to simulate pollutant content of the city plumes such as for Los Angeles.

The first effective therapy for exudative macular degeneration (AMD) was Photodynamic Therapy (PDT). Diagnosis of the disease was to a large extent by fluorescein angiography (FA). Distinguishing between the leaky choroidal neovessels (CNV) associated with ...

New triruthenium-carbonyl clusters derivatized with glucose-modified bicyclophosphite ligands have been synthesized. These compounds were found to have cytostatic and cytotoxic activity and depending on the number of bicyclophosphite ligands, and could be ...

To optimize phototherapy and photodetection of cancer, one of the important variables is the localization of the dye after injection. To study this in a clinical context, we have constructed an apparatus based on a non-invasive optical fiber that detects the dye by light induced fluorescence. The time course of the fluorescence signal can be used directly for optimizing photodetection. However, complementary information on the detailed localization of the drug by fluorescence microscopy, and a correlation o

The selectivity of Cu deposition from bis(hexafluoroacetylacetonato)Cu(II) on SiO2 patterned with a Pt seeding layer was studied as a function of the reagent gas mixt. On Pt, the Cu film growth rate increases with the amt. of H2O vapor in the gas flow, and is independent of the chem. nature of the carrier gas used (H2 or He). The selectivity of the Cu deposition is significantly improved when using He rather than H2 as carrier gas, esp. at high H2O vapor concns. where rapid film growth can be obtained.

A device for the preventative photodynamic therapy of secondary cataract has been developed. Disturbance of the epithelial cells of the crystalline lens during the primary cataract surgery and/or their migration thereafter can frequently generate secondary cataract. This can generally be prevented by destroying these epithelial cells. One approach is to expose them to a phototoxic dye which is then activated by selective exposure to light. For this purpose we designed a light distributor furnishing a torus-

The laser-induced pyrolytic deposition of Pt spots on glass was studied for different laser powers, beam diams., and irradn. time. Laser powers up to 500 mW give deposition rates of typically 0.5 mm/s. Temp. calcns. as a function of time allows one to study process kinetics according to the thickness and diam. of the spots. Resistivity measurements of Pt lines give comparable values to those of bulk material.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: A technique to manufacture a stable, reproducible three-dimensional optical phantom is presented. This phantom reproduces the tissue's optical properties as well as the geometry and, to some extent, the mechanical properties of th ...

An unusual elevated atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) at altitudes of Lip to 5000 m was observed, using a combination of elastic and water vapor lidars, during a 10-day period in 2003. There was a persistent stationary anticyclonic regime over Western Europe. The presence of the elevated ABL and nighttime residual layer was confirmed in central Europe with data obtained from regional radiosoundings.

Autofluorescence (AF) from bronchial tissue is increasingly used for the endoscopic detection of early bronchial neoplasia. Several imaging systems are commercially available, all detecting the absolute or relative AF intensity and/or spectral contrasts be ...

The photothermal laser-induced chem. vapor deposition of Cu was studied as a function of the writing speed, the light intensity, and the diam. of the focal spot on the substrate, at three different pressures of the Cu bishexafluoroacetylacetonate precursor. The height, the width, and the elec. cond. of the deposited metal stripes are measured. The metalorg. vapor pressure is the key variable for attaining high writing speeds. Copper stripes have been obtained at 1 mm s-1.

The popular statistical theory of abs. diffuse reflectance of powders put forth by N. T. Melamed (1963) was reexamd. thoroughly. Substantial errors in the phys. formulation of the theory were found and a cor. version is presented. Some of Melamed's data fit to the theory are also reexamd. in the light of the cor. theor. model.

Autofluorescence (AF) bronchoscopy is a useful tool for early cancer detection. However, the mechanisms involved in this diagnosis procedure are poorly understood. We present a clinical autofluorescence imaging study to assess the depth of the principal co ...

OH- radical reactivity with total volatile org. compds. (VOC), SkVOC[VOC], is directly obtained in the planetary boundary layer (PBL). A method is based on a perturbation technique where high initial OH- concns. are created by flash photolysis of O3 and subsequent reaction of O(1D) with H2O. Laser-induced fluorescence measures residual OH- concn. at different time delays after the perturbation (
