To miniaturize the double-resonance (DR) rubidium (Rb) vapor-cell atomic clocks, a new type of micro-loop-gap microwave resonator (mu-LGR) is proposed for TE011-like mode where the magnetic field inside the cavity is homogeneous and oriented along its long ...

This work addresses a first attempt at using current density optimization algorithms to gain insight into the relation between maximum achievable gain in a given direction and the mutual coupling to another antenna nearby. The methodology is presented on t ...

This work presents performance of robust wearable antennas intended to operate in Wireless Body Area Networks (W-BAN) in UHF, TETRAPOL communication band, 380-400 MHz. We propose a Planar Inverted F Antenna (PIFA) as reliable antenna type for UHF W-BAN app ...

Real-time clearance control in turbine engines allows improving their efficiency and safety, by enabling prognostics and optimized condition-based maintenance in the turbine hot section. This paper presents a novel 24 GHz microwave sensing system for real- ...

Electrically small antennas (ESAs) have been discussed since the early radio days, when all antennas were small compared to the wavelength. The boom of mobile phones triggered a second wave of intense research activity on these devices, which continues tod ...

This paper discusses several evolved micro-loop-gap microwave resonator designs for chip-scale atomic clock applications. Two different schemes have been investigated to develop the LEMAC (LTF-EPFL Miniature Atomic Clock) based on the optical-microwave dou ...

We demonstrate and study a microcell microwave atomic clock based on optical-microwave double resonance (DR) interrogation operated in a pulsed Ramsey scheme, called the mu POP clock, based on a microfabricated Rb vapor cell and a micro-loop-gap microwave ...

Stored energies of radiating systems have generated research interest for several decades due to their relationship with Q-factor and fractional bandwidth. In this letter, material derivatives are used to provide a new interpretation of widely used stored ...

Miniaturization techniques enables the use of antennas in sensing systems at cellular and molecular level due to its reduced size. In this kind of systems, the implanted sensors are usually surrounded by a lossy biological medium which affects antenna beha ...

In vapor cell atomic clocks the atom-field interaction is typically obtained inside a microwave cavity resonator in which the microwave driving field together with a static magnetic field and an optical field are applied to excite the atoms. These fields a ...

This Letter presents a new cavity-based approach for measuring the radiation efficiency of Ultra Wideband (UWB) antennas. The procedure is based on a generalized Wheeler cap method (GWCM ) that is only practical for narrowband measurements and so this Lett ...

We propose an autonomous battery-less wireless sensor node that combines on a single printed circuit board an ultra-wideband (UWB) transmitter and its printed antenna, together with a piezoelectric cantilever and a solar cell array to harvest vibrations an ...

Real-time Blade Tip Timing (BTT) in rotating machinery enables condition-based maintenance and blade failure prevention. In this paper, we propose a new 6 GHz microwave sensing system suitable for BTT in gas and steam turbines. The system working principle ...

We have designed and built an optically isolated millimeter-wave detection system to prevent interference from a nearby, powerful, 2.45 GHz microwave source in millimeter-wave propagation experiments in the TORoroidal Plasma EXperiment (TORPEX). A series o ...

The authors present the realisation and characterisation of an additively manufactured (AM) microwave resonator cavity for double-resonance (DR) vapour-cell atomic clocks. The design of the compact microwave cavity is based on the loop-gap resonator approa ...

The direction of arrival (DoA) estimation performance of a vector sensor using the instantaneous Poynting vector is evaluated in relation to the realized element patterns of the vector sensor. Up to six amplitudes, one amplitude per field component of the impinging wave, are measured in the vector sensor in a time instance and yield a DoA estimate via the instantaneous Poynting vector based on the direction of maximum incoming power. Proportional amplitude readings with respect to the impinging fields are n

Fully implantable wireless telemetry systems improve the performance and reliability of neural interfaces by eliminating infection-prone percutaneous cables. Meanwhile, wireless links with high data rates are required to meet the growing demand for high-de ...

This work presents novel techniques for producing substrates for flexible antennas. The technique we propose is based on the use of an already existing and widely used substrate material Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), where the dielectric properties of the s ...

Implanted antennas are essential components of implanted medical devices. However, their gain and efficiency are significantly constrained by the lossy nature of biological tissue. Huygens source antennas, which combine fundamental TE and TM modes, are promising candidates for implanted applications, as the TE10 and TM10 modes exhibit relatively low near-field losses. Due to the differing loss characteristics of the TE10 and TM10 modes, the optimal gain and power distribution between these modes in an impla

CONCLUSION: An unequal 1 x 8 super wideband power divider is designed with improved amplitude weighting for maximum gain and low SLL when used as an antenna array feed. With this divider, a single-polarized Vivaldi 1 x 8 antenna array and a dual-polarized aperture-coupled 1 x 8 antenna array are developed for super wideband 5G systems. Super wideband performance is demonstrated with appropriate radiation patterns, high average gain and low SLL.
