We present the latest development of our in-house miniature atomic clock (LEMAC). The clock scheme is based on the continuous wave (CW) optical-microwave double resonance (DR) interrogation. Significant efforts have been put in a newly designed miniature m ...

Phosphate buffered saline (PBS) solution is a balanced salt solution employed for cell manipulation in cell culture experiments. In this work, PBS is used as base component for making liquid tissue-equivalent materials, also known as phantoms. For this purpose, the dielectric properties of PBS and other balanced salt solution and cell culture media used in cell culture experiments are measured at different temperatures (9 ∘ C, 21 ∘ C, and 37 ∘ C) with an open-ended coaxial probe. Moreover, the two-pole Cole

Implantable bioelectronic devices predominantly use wireless links for communication and/or power transfer. When considering transmitting implanted antennas, electromagnetic radiation through biological media is highly attenuated, and previous work has sho ...

Tissue phantoms are materials designed to mimic the dielectric properties of biological tissues. This work proposes eco-friendly tissue phantoms of cartilage, cerebrospinal fluid and stomach in the frequency range between 0.4 and 6 GHz. For reaching this p ...

This code is used for developing the project entitled “Study on conformal antennas, proof of concept prototype for a UAV”, from the aspects of theory, design, and implementation. This code aims to speed up the investigation of an arbitrary phased array ant ...

Modern millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems such as on-body networks, automotive sensors, and short-range wireless links are increasingly expected to support both high-speed communication and precise sensing. For seamless integration into such platforms, antennas must be compact, lightweight, flexible, and low-cost. However, existing antennas suffer from a rigid form factor and limited beam-steering. This article presents a low-profile, fast scanning leaky-wave antenna (LWA) operating in the unlicensed V-band (

In this review, intended to introduce the convened session on electrically small antennas, we describe the evolution of electrically small antennas from the early nineties, when the boom of mobile phones triggered an intense research activity on the, to ou ...

An ultralow-profile circularly polarized (CP) reflectarray (RA) antenna is presented in this article, based on the variable-rotation technique for beam collimation and scanning. Starting from a conventional split-loop element, a new wideband element is des ...

In wireless communication systems, the Friis transmission equation is commonly used to quickly estimate wireless transmission efficiency between the transmitter and the receiver. In the case of wireless implantable bioelectronic systems, the gain of the im ...

In this paper, we analyze the integration of small antennas in a drone protected by a conductive structure. They must be light and resistant to provide high collision resilience, which is critical for drones flown indoors and in complex environments. To ac ...

This paper introduces a novel 2-D beam-steerable rectenna designed for mm-wave RF wireless power transfer (RF-WPT) applications. The 2-D beamsteering capability of the proposed rectenna is achieved by integrating an on-chip 4 × 4 Butler matrix, which is co ...

The radio frequency (RF) performance of implantable antennas is significantly affected by the lossy biological tissues surrounding the implant. This paper introduces an an-alytical method for assessing the gain and radiation patterns of implantable antenna ...

This poster presents a new base station antenna design and preliminary results on electric field mapping for localizing a UWB-MICS robot in an arena. A batch of new base station antenna prototypes, was built and measured at EPFL - LEMA. A microstrip-fed compact monopole design, built in the inexpensive FR4 substrate, was chosen. Reflexion coefficient measurements and radiation pattern simulations meet the project specifications. The presented prototype is electrically small and therefore affected by the fee

Wireless Communication with a body implanted device (e.g., medical sensor) represents a challenge, for three reasons: First, the antenna used for the link has to be highly miniaturized. Second, biological tissues have high losses, and thus will attenuate any wireless signal. Finally, as the implant is placed in a living host, levels of powers that may be used for a wireless link are heavily limited by regulations, in order to protect the host from exposure to electromagnetic fields. Thus, such wireless link

This paper addresses the design of an antenna array for a portable picocell station with omnidirectional coverage. The proposed solution includes a stacked patch antenna as a single radiating element of the antenna array and a hybrid beamforming network. T ...

Advanced antenna system (AAS) is a viable option for 5G millimeter-wave (mmWave) applications. AAS single element is favored to be dual-polarized, wideband, high gain, and compact in order to be utilized for 5G antenna arrays. In this paper, a low complexi ...

Millimetre wave (mmWave) has been a popular research topic in recent years. Termination loads are useful for RF components and integrated circuits. Commercially available terminators are expensive and not easily applicable for integration to MMICs. In this ...

We present our studies on a compact high-performance continuous wave (CW) double-resonance (DR) rubidium frequency standard in view of future portable applications. Our clock exhibits a short-term stability of 1.4 x 10(-13) tau(-1/2), consistent with the s ...

Fundamental limits on radiation performance of implantable antennas serve as the design quality gauge, facilitate the choice of the antenna type, and provide simple design rules to maximize the radiation performance. This study obtains the limits using two ...

A method to synthesize shaped beams with antenna arrays is presented. Specifically, the element excitations are determined such that the array radiates a power pattern that approximates a desired shape. To efficiently solve this problem, an iterative algor ...
