Doping of nanocrystalline TiO2 powders with sizes ranging from 9.5 nm up to 19.1 nnn was carried out with thiourea (TU) to introduce the C, N and S-species into the TiO2. The crystal size was determined by X-ray diffraction. Doped-TiO2 particles were color ...

Some wastewaters from the industrial processing of natural products, such as cork boiling wastewater (CBW), have been known to contain high quantities of polyphenolic compounds that are capable of forming complexes with ferric and ferrous iron and even con ...

This study addresses unreported features for Cu DC-magnetron sputtering on cotton mediating inactivation of Escherichia coil K12 (from now on E. coil). In-depth profile for the different Cu-species inside the cotton fibers was determined by 5 key Ar+ etchi ...

The study presents the first evidence for Norfoxacin photodegradation by uniform, adhesive and robust CuOx-polystyrene (CuOx-PES) films under visible light. Repetitive Norfloxacin degradation was attained on CuOx-PES films activated by visible light. The s ...

Evidence is presented for the RF pretreatment of polyester enhances the TiO2 coating generation of oxidative species/radicals under a low level actinic light irradiation. After 30 min RF-plasma pretreatment of the polyester samples, the fastest bacterial i ...

The present bi-partite work describes the development and validation of a mechanistic kinetic model of SODIS E. coli inactivation, enhanced with H2O2. In this first part, the mechanism of the baseline dark phenomena is modelled. A mechanistic model involvi ...

Insight into two different uniform atomic-scale microstructures of Cu-and Ti-oxides sputtered on polyethylene (PET) presenting different redox properties and a distinct bacterial inactivation dynamics. Co-sputtered (CuOx-TiO2-PET) consists mainly of CuO. I ...

5-amino-6-methyl-2-benzimidazolone (AMBI), used in the manufacture of dyes, was characterised as a biorecalcitrant compound by means of different biodegradability tests. In order to enhance the biodegradability of this important pollutant, the application of Advanced Oxidation Process (AOPs) as a pre-treatment was explored. Some experiments were addressed to find the most efficient AOP. The systems H2O2/hv, TiO2/H2O2/hv, Fe3+/hv, Fe3+/H2O2 and Fe3+/H2O2/hv were compared. The photo-Fenton system was the most

This study presents the first report addressing the effect of FeOx-TiO2 films microstructure on the transients detected by fast spectroscopy related to the long-range bacterial inactivation performance. The different fast kinetic femtosecond transient spec ...

In this work, the antimicrobial effects of the photo-Fenton process on yeast cells were tested (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), an essential eukaryotic unicellular model of living cells. Near-neutral pH was used in all studies, while iron sulfate and iron citra ...

This is the second part of a comprehensive review article about photo-Fenton reaction at near-neutral pH used for water and wastewater disinfection. In this part, a critical revision of the fundamental physical, chemical and biological parameters affecting ...

This study addresses the deposition of active, uniform nanoparticulate Ag-thin films on polyester textiles by DC-magnetron sputtering (DC) and pulsed DC-magnetron sputtering (DCP). The deposition of Ag on the polyester fiber was observed to be the function ...

Degradation of the biorecalcitrant pharmaceutical micropollutant ibuprofen (IBP) was carried out by means of several advanced oxidation hybrid configurations. TiO2 photocatalysis, photo-Fenton and sonolysis - all of them under solar simulated illumination ...

Evidence is presented for radio-frequency plasma pretreatment enhancing the amount and adhesion of TiO2 sputtered on polyester (PES) and on polyethylene (PE) films. Pretreatment is necessary to attain a suitable TiO2 loading leading to an acceptable Escher ...

The bacterial inactivation efficiencies of silver metal and oxides and their combinations on textile fabrics was investigated to evaluate the disinfectant action on airborne bacteria. The inactivation performance was seen to depend on the amount of silver on the textile surface. The preparation of the polyester-polyamide Ag-loaded textiles was carried out by RF-plasma and vacuum-UV (V-UV) surface activation followed by chemical reduction of silver salts. The rate of bacterial inactivation by the silver load
