Synchronous motors require sensors in order to control these devices in speed and/or position. Basically, the auto-commutation needs 3 sensors for a 3-phase type actuator. In micro-motors, as there is no more room to place the sensors, self-sensing approach must be used. The motor becomes a sensor it-self and electromagnetic phenomena are analyzed to detect the position of the rotor. These phenomena are magnetic saturation, back-EMF detection, Eddy current analysis and/or magnetic anisotropy variation. The

Low urinary tract dysfunctions and symptoms (LUTS) and Urinary incontinence (UI) in particular is a medical condition that affects millions of people worldwide. One of the most promising long term treatments for this condition is the use of an artificial u ...

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) offer a high degree of stretchability along with biocompatibility, making them valuable for biomedical applications. However, in order to effectively control the desired strain response of the DEA, it is crucial to identify the factors that influence the extent of actuation. This study focuses on the strain optimization of an equibiaxial DEA by employing design of experiment methods to investigate the influence of different factors. DEAs and their applications rely on v

Pumps play a crucial role in sustaining life by facilitating fluid circulation within the human body. This article presents the design and characterization of a high-performance tubular dielectric elastomer pump. The study investigates three distinct pump ...

This paper describes a linear motor optimization based on an analytical model. The studied motor, also called "ironless", consists of an iron core U shape with permanent magnets on each side, between which the coils can move. The glider which supports the coils is made of a non-ferromagnetic composite material, like epoxy. For this reason this type of motor has a small force density, but on the other hand this motor has a small moving mass, which allows high accelerations. The goal is to show that various o

Inflating costs and emerging applications are spawning interests toward smaller and faster electric drives. The challenges of miniaturization make magnetic bearings more appealing, as they provide intrinsic high-speed capability and need virtually zero-mai ...

A transient thermal model used to monitor the temperature distribution in real-time in a long-stroke moving-magnet planar actuator is presented. The temperature distribution in the stator coils of the planar actuator depends on the trajectory of the levita ...

Plantar pressure plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of foot ulcers among patients with diabetes and peripheral polyneuropathy. Pressure relief is a key requirement for both the prevention and treatment of plantar ulcers. Conventional medical practice ...

Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs) are a type of smart material described as compliant capacitors. They show impressive performances as soft actuators, such as a high strain and fast response. Nonetheless, replicating natural muscle function with DEAs h ...

A new hearing therapy called Direct Acoustical Cochlear Stimulation (DACS) was developed and validated in a first clinical trial with four patients. The key component of this therapy based on an implantable hearing device is a micro-actuator that is implanted in the mastoid right behind the external auditory canal of a patient. It generates vibrations that are directly coupled to the inner ear fluids and bypass therefore the outer and the middle ear. This allows treating severe to profound mixed hearing los

Piezoelectric actuator has been used in different applications because of its compact structure compared to magnetic actuators. This paper reports the influence of piezoelectric actuators geometry on the plate vibrating amplitude. Through a Finite Element ...

Based on a mathematical model, simulation results show how the mechanical performances of the motor are sensitive to the prestressing force. A test bench has been developed in the laboratory for experimental measurements. The motor is driven by a two-phase resonant converter controlled by a DSP in order to realize a flexible control scheme. An hysteresis brake dynamometer controlled by PC make it possible to generate any load profile. Results obtained by measurement confirm the motor sensitivity to the vari

The paper presents a completely analytical method for determining the eddy currents in a cylindrical configuration. The configuration consists of a cylindrical permanent magnet rotating inside a conducting hollow cylinder (stator). The solution is obtained ...

The paper presents a completely analytical solution for the magnetic field, the induced eddy currents and corresponding losses in a toroidal laminated core with a rectangular cross section. The diffusion equation is analytically solved using a separation o ...

This article presents the development and validation of a three-dimensional force and torque semi-analytical model for ironless permanent magnet structures. This method relies on the definition of the magnetic flux density generated by permanent magnets in ...

Soft Magnetic Composites (SMCs) have huge application potential in electrical devices. With the development of additive manufacturing (AM), the properties of SMCs can be boosted. It is therefore required an optimization algorithm to design SMCs considering ...

The present invention relates to a pump (1) implantable in a human or animal body and comprising :an airtight casing (10),a dielectric elastomer tube (20) extending within said casing (10), arranged so that a volume (22) within said dielectric elastomer tube (20) is modified when a voltage is applied to said dielectric elastomer tube;a negative pressure chamber (n) between said dielectric elastomer tube (20) and said casing (10).the casing comprises two lateral edges (100a, 100b). the dielectric elastomer t

The design, properties and optimization of an ultrasonic actuator are presented. Numerical modeling has been carried out and simulations with the FEM Ansys software have been realized. To avoid performing a large number of simulations, input parameters like geometrical dimensions, material properties or even boundary conditions can be judiciously chosen in function of their influence on the output parameter (deformation amplitude). In this manner, sensitivity of each input parameter on the output parameter
