Performance of dielectric elastomer actuators is closely related to its breakdown field. On the other hand, to enhance the available energy, multilayer configuration is needed to increase the amount of active material. However, multilayer configuration suf ...

Soft robotics provides a promising approach for underwater exploration by enabling devices that replicate the fluid movements of aquatic life. Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs) are well-suited for this application due to their high energy density, fast strain rate and silent operation. However, the integration of these typically planar actuators into complex, three dimensional shapes, e.g., for biomimetic robots, remains challenging. This work proposes a robotic fish design that utilizes fiber-reinforce

This paper presents the modelling, design and testing of a short-stroke linear actuator to be embedded in a battery-powered positioning device. The particularity of this small (1 cm3) electromagnetic actuator is that it has to provide a constant force alon ...

Within the framework of a project consisting in developing a novel haptic computer keyboard, force and position control is required for each key. The previous project phase consisted in the design and optimization of a miniature actuator which is to be ins ...

Some applications require an energy transfer without contacts and wires. The mutual inductive effects between two coils allow to transfer energy to an electronic consumer through an air gap. This paper presents an analytical model of a coreless transformer used to design a contactless energy transfer from a platform to a notebook battery charger. By defining the geometric parameters of the transformer, the model is able to compute its magnetic parameters. It is then possible to get the electric quantities w

This paper introduces a promising technique, called the first-pulse technique, for detecting the rotor position of a brushless DC motor at standstill. The technique is based on the B-H hysteresis characteristics of the stator iron. Depending on the rotor p ...

An original analytical formula for the torque/emf constant of a slotless brushless DC (BLDC) motor is presented. It is obtained by solving and integrating the permanent magnet field. In addition, formulas for the both stator and rotor iron fields are derived, in order to estimate the saturation level and losses. The results are verified using a FEM simulation. © 2006 IEEE.

In this paper, a method for sensorless position estimation of linear transducers at standstill is suggested. The method makes use of current pulses, which is a common sensorless starting technique for 3-phase synchronous motors. Most transducers possess however only one phase. In order to find a unique solution, the proposed method differs in some important aspects from the methods used in 3-phase systems. A general discussion of different inductance phenomena is presented. A combination of these phenomena

Piezoelectric ultrasonic motors are superior to electromagnetic micro motors, because their efficiency remains theoretically constant during miniaturization. However, the still relatively recent technology has a considerable unexploited optimisation potential. Numerical structural analysis by the means of the finite element method (FEM) is a common approach for dimensioning piezoelectric motors. Consequently, there is a need for efficient optimisation procedures adapted to the FEM simulation. We developed a

This work presents a soft robotic fish that achieves large-amplitude tail fin bending through a novel design where dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are functionally integrated to form the body. The challenge of combining structure and actuation is addressed by utilizing the bending of fiber-reinforced DEAs to create three-dimensional, hollow shapes. This active skin is prestretched against a flexible spring steel spine, forming a negative stiffness biasing system that enables large, efficient displacem

Magneto-Rheological Elastomers (MREs) represent emerging composite materials consisting of small magnetic particles dispersed in a highly elastic polymeric matrix. Particles interactions with external fields (magnetic and electric) and external stresses re ...

The high prevalence of lower extremity ulceration and amputation in people with diabetes is strongly linked to difficulties in achieving and maintaining a reduction of high plantar pressures (PPs) which remains an important risk factor. The effectiveness o ...

Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), particularly urinary incontinence (UI), represent a significant global health challenge, affecting millions of patients worldwide. The artificial urinary sphincter (AUS) remains one of the most effective intervention fo ...

Facial paralysis is a highly burdening condition, resulting in a patient's inability to move his mimic musculature on one or both sides of his face. This condition compromises the patient's communication and facial expressions, and thus dramatically reduce ...

Soft Magnetic Composites (SMCs) demonstrate excellent potentials for electromagnetic applications. The isotropy is one critical feature in designing the composite. This work presents a shape optimization algorithm for SMCs subject to isotropy and volume co ...

Artificial muscles, designed to replicate the movements of natural biological muscles, hold significant promise in the fields of robotics and prosthetics. Recent advancements have led to the development of fiber-reinforced actuators, drawing inspiration fr ...

We present an analytical solution for the induced eddy currents and the corresponding losses generated in the rotor of a slotless permanent magnet (PM) motor. The field excitation is a current layer placed at the stator interior surface. The solution is ba ...

An original analytical determination of the force acting on the moving coil in an electromagnetic actuator is presented. The actuator magnetic field is solved analytically using the Schwarz-Christoffel (SC) mapping. The SC integral is solved analytically u ...

In this paper it is shown that the phase self inductance and resistance, both measured at a high frequency, of a permanent magnet (PM) motor with non-salient rotor vary slightly with the rotor position. The origin of these variations is deeply investigated, taking into account typical physical phenomena present in PM motor. Surprisingly, no classical approach can explain these variations. The physical explication is found in the non-linearity of the iron magnetization B-H curve, and more accurately in the l

This paper presents the design, the properties, and the optimization study of a new type of ultrasonic linear motor. Numerical modeling has been carried out and simulations with software have been realized. To avoid performing a large number of simulations ...
