Piezoelectric ultrasonic motors are superior to electromagnetic micromotors, because their efficiency remains theoretically constant during miniaturization. However, the still relatively recent technology has a considerable unexploited optimization potenti ...

Magneto-Rheological Fluids (MRFs) are smart materials whose physical properties can be controlled by an exciting magnetic field. MRFs are described as Bingham plastics with variable magnetic field dependent yield stress. Thanks to their particular features ...

Diabetes is a rapidly growing disease, with important complications that decrease the quality of life of patients. Diabetic Foot Ulceration is a major complication of diabetes and can lead to gangrene and amputation. It is related to high pressure develope ...

The electrical properties such as the electrical breakdown and the permittivity but also the softness of the elastomer are key factors for the performance of DEA. In order to have the best use of elastomer films, single-layer actuators have been deeply stu ...

Devices fabricated from Soft Magnetic Composites (SMCs) are gaining popularity in research and application. The multiscale characteristics require special attention. Solving the quasi-statics Maxwell’s equations on such devices consumes huge time and memor ...

This paper proposes an analysis of multi-factor fabrications of magnetic membranes. In order to acquire some knowledge about the influence of fabrication factors, an analysis is performed using a Design of Experiment (DoE) methodology. The latter is applie ...

Ultrasonic motors are a good alternative to electromagnetic motors in medical robotics, since they are electromagnetically compatible. Estimating speed instead of using encoders reduces cost and dimension of the robot on the one hand and increases reliabil ...

Peripheral sensorimotor neuropathy among people with diabetes is one of the leading causes of foot ulceration. Plantar pressure is a significant parameter to control for the prevention of foot ulceration. A low-cost sensing insole, which can provide a reli ...

This paper shows that the standard industrial targets that need to be detected using an electromagnetic induction sensor cannot be represented by their exact size definition in international standards. Reinforcing steel with defined 16mm diameter according ...

Precise and robust positioning features are vital need in modern-day industries, particularly in the context of industrial automation within the micro/meso domain. In this work, we present a novel miniaturized planar microactuator with a total size of 40 m ...

The proposed paper discusses the design and characterization of a soft miniature Magneto-Rheological (MR) shock absorber. In particular, the final application considered for the insertion of the designed devices is a controllable variable stiffness sole fo ...

This paper addresses the design and manufacturing of small scale square planar coils with inductance densities ranging from 2 to 19 miH.mm-2. The design strategy is based on both analytic formulas and finite element method (FEM). Two different manufacturin ...

In the context of the development of a 500’000 rpm miniaturized permanent magnet motor, a 3D analytical model for the assessment of mechanical stresses is presented. The significant mechanical stresses and thermal constraints encountered at such speeds are ...

We present an optimization design of a slotless permanent-magnet brushless dc motor (400 W, 6000 rpm), with two-segment Halbach arrays. The optimization is based on a motor analytical model which is obtained by solving the magnetic scalar potential using t ...

The paper presents a simplified analytical method to design a small two-pole slotless brushless dc motor. Using only a few approximations, the motor analytical model is formulated to generate a system of equations. The system can be solved analytically, pr ...

A sensorless position detection technique for a permanent magnet (PM) motor with non-salient rotor is presented. It is shown that the phase self inductances and resistances measured at higher frequencies vary slightly with the rotor position. The origin of ...

This work addresses the design and fabrication of small scale planar coils with high number of turns (> 100) and self inductances up to 32 H suitable for the enhancement of inductive sensors performances. First, the modified Wheeler’s formula is used to de ...

The ironless inductive position sensor (I2PS) is a five-coil air-cored structure that senses the variation of flux linkage between supply and sense coils and relates it to the linear position of a moving coil. In air-cored structures, the skin and proximit ...

This paper focuses on the application of low power and low frequency Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) based localization system. The transceiver presented will wake-up by a modulated magnetic field that is emitted from the transmitter module. This enables the receiver to have low power consumption when not in the range of the transmitter. The goal is to provide an empirical relationship between the RSSI and the relative distance between two modules. To determine the optimal settings required to re
