The aim of a European project Nephron+ is design of a wearable artificial kidney device (WAKD). This paper is focused on design of the corresponding ultralow-hemolysis continuous-operation blood pump. Accurate specifications and operating principle of the pump are determined; a first, non-optimal configuration of an electromechanical actuator which will be used to pump the blood is designed; its prototype is presented along with the corresponding driving electronic circuit; finally, based on the measurement

This paper is concerned by the port-Hamiltonian modeling and control of a dielectric elastomer actuator designed for use in a cardiac assist device. The proposed nonlinear model captures the actuator’s hyperelastic material behavior, viscoelastic damping, and electromechanical coupling, and remains valid for large deformations up to 40 %. An original Interconnection and Damping Assignment Passivity-Based Control strategy is developed to achieve closed-loop stabilization at a desired position. The accuracy o

Specific applications, such as dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) or electroactive polymers, require to switch voltage levels exceeding the ratings of existing semiconductor devices. In low power application, reversible flyback are widely used to supply ...

The paper proposes a new method to determine the tooth cogging force in a brushless DC (BLDC) motor which is used in a hard-disk application. This force might be a source of tooth vibrations and motor noise. In the new method, the permanent-magnet (PM) pol ...

Magnetically-levitated drives are interesting in applications which demand a combination of reliable operation and high speeds. In the latter domain, slotless stators are recognized as the most suitable, as they deliver higher power density and lower speed ...

In this paper, the case of a battery charger for electric vehicles based on a wireless power transmission is addressed. The specificity of every stage of the overall system is presented. Based on calculated and measured results, relevant capacitive compens ...

This paper presents a complete method for optimizing a linear actuator in order to perform its sensorless speed control. The optimizer maximizes the difference of inductances between two positions of interest in order to perform the efficient position detection. The paper shows how the modifications made on a normal E-shaped reluctant actuator achieve the objective of sensorless position detection and speed control.

Facial paralysis is a challenging condition, and current treatments rely on invasive transplant surgeries using a two-stage free muscle transfer procedure. The use of artificial muscles is a novel, less invasive approach, allowing faster recovery and more ...

A wide part of the proposed paper is devoted to designing soft magnets using a stereolithography 3D printer. A state of the art on soft magnetic materials is carried out together with an overview of the existing printing technologies to obtain complex non- ...

Impedance pumps are simple designs that allow the generation or amplification of flow. They are fluid-filled systems based on flexible tubing connected to tubing with different impedances. A periodic off-center compression of the flexible tubing causes the ...

This work presents the electromagnetic design of a 3D-printed winding for a coreless linear motor. The key geometric parameters are optimized with motor constant as the objective. The optimization is applied to two types of coil layouts. An increase of the ...

The estimation of rotor position is fundamental for the commissioning of magnetically-levitated drives. The sensors required for this measurement must be close to the rotor, often requiring constructive measures that may limit the application potential of ...

Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) are a class of Smart Materials that are ideal for creating compact actuators. The complex nature of their behavior results in the use of these materials in simple geometries (wires, sheets) limiting their performances. A design me ...

In this paper, we investigate a novel passive approach to improve the actuation frequency of Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) with the Kirigami-inspired design using a thin layer of highly thermally conductive material. By depositing an 80 nm layer of gold on th ...

Touch is commonly used to mediate human-machine interactions, notably in the setting of Digital Musical Instruments (DMIs), where touch screens are prevalent. The lack of rich haptic feedback has an impact on the richness and quality of the interaction. Pi ...

We present an analytical solution for the magnetic field, induced eddy currents, and the corresponding losses generated in the rotor of a slotless permanent-magnet (PM) motor. The field excitation is a current sheet placed at the stator interior surface. T ...

During the last three decades, the field of electro active polymers (EAP) has seen a rapidly growing interest worldwide. These materials can exhibit many advantages, such as elasticity, high energy density, high dynamics and are often nicknamed artificial ...
