This paper addresses the design of a new hybrid microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) micromotor. It is a small three-phase axial flux brushless dc (BLDC) motor. The stator is developed following the almost-standard CMOS technology rules used for MEMS manu ...

This paper is concerned with the port Hamiltonian modeling and control of a dielectric elastomer actuator used for a cardiac assistance device. The proposed non-linear model is identified under different applied voltages and pressures, and validated against experimental results with relative errors of less than 0.3%. Subsequently, two passivity-based controllers are designed to stabilize the actuator at a desired position. The first controller is designed using control by interconnection. The second one con

This work addresses the design and the fabrication of small scale square planar coils with high density of turns and self inductances up to 170 µH. First, the modified Wheelers formula is used to determine the optimal number of turns in order to achieve th ...

This paper presents a method to detect the position of a linear actuator without any position sensor. The actuator winding has a resonance frequency that is very related to the position of the linear actuator moving part. A sinusoidal scan voltage is superposed to the main voltage. Its frequency is close to the resonance frequency and therefore it is possible to measure the resulting scan current amplitude that allows position detection.

Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) based actuators have been commonly used in applications that require being compact and lightweight. In this paper, the inherent stiffness of a flexure-based linear guide is used to create a bias-spring SMA actuator which further re ...

Smart Materials such as Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) play a major role in creating Smart Actuators that are compact and high performing. Traditional SMA bias-spring actuators are only capable of a single linear output. Using topology optimization, compliant S ...

Ventricular assist devices (VADs) are vital for patients with severe heart failure but often face limitations in energy efficiency and adaptability. To address these challenges, the dielectric elastomer-based electropneumatic device (DE-EPD) is introduced, ...

Magnetically-levitated drives are compelling in applications where long-lifetime operation or process chamber encapsulation is a requirement. To exploit these advantages, contactless position sensors are needed for position information of the rotor. Off-th ...

This study presents the development and experimental validation of an artificial urinary sphincter (AUS) based on dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) for the treatment of urinary incontinence. Traditional AUS devices are often mechanically complex, prone ...

Low-frequency electromagnetic scattering from conductive and permeable bodies is the main principle of detection devices. To be able to classify the objects in the base material, a fast forward model based on the dipolar approximation was developed and ver ...

The present invention relates to a valve (10) comprising a housing (11) having a peripheral structure (12) made of a magnetic field conductive material and a core (13) disposed in said housing (11) The core (13) and the peripheral structure (12) delimit a ...

This paper addresses the design of a new hybrid MEMS micromotor. It gives insights on the choices, which led to the fabrication of a small 3-phases axial flux BLDC motor. The stator is developed following the almost CMOS technology rules used for MEMS manufacturing and the coils have two copper layers. The rotor is made of a ring permanent magnet assembled over the stator chip. The stator design has been performed using an analytical model presented in the paper and validated using finite elements and measu

In the proposed work, the dynamic performances of a miniature soft Magneto-Rheological (MR) shock absorber are analyzed. The final application for which the damper has been designed and in which it will be embedded is a variable stiffness insole for patien ...

When designing a very-high-speed (VHS) machine, it is crucial to evaluate the windage losses accurately, because they are an important part of the total losses. It is therefore important to validate a reliable model, further used for the design and optimiz ...

Sense of touch belongs to one of the five Human Senses. Whereas blind people largely use feeling in everyday life, sighted person mainly focus on hearing and vision. However, haptic interface started being introduced in customers applications, such as smar ...

This paper presents the critical parasitic elements of coupled inductors and their influence when designing a low input (12V) and ultra-high output voltage (>4000V) DC-DC Flyback Converter. The aim is to design a compact converter capable to supply the ult ...

Soft actuators, such as dielectric elastomer actuators, are often optimized with a focus on achieving maximum deformation and flexibility. However, for practical use and integration into various applications, the generated force and the achieved work are a ...

Precise positioning during assembly of devices is an important step in many automated manufacturing processes. There are various concepts of micropositioners based on electromagnetic, piezoelectric and electrostatic principles. However, most of such existing technologies are undergoing thorough scientific improvement especially in terms of efforts to achieve high range and step resolution. To achieve this, an adapted actuator design in combination with an appropriate control algorithm is needed for a given

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs), also known as artificial muscles, are a sub-class of electroactive polymers (EAP). Due to their many qualities, such as high actuation strain, high bandwidth, high energy density, and a flexible body, they have shown ...

Eddy current induction is used in a wide range of electronic devices, for example in detection sensors. Due to the advances in computer hardware and software, the need for 3D computation and system comprehension is a requirement to develop and optimize suc ...
